Consolidated Kansas

Great. I have one that I need to get up. But I built a pen where my old pool went. Now I can't seem to find a place not overly visible to the road where I can get electricity to that isn't covered by chicken pens. I have a new liner in my basement just waiting for the last 3 years.
Sounds like you will need to do some butchering in the near future. I just let my cayugas out of the pen where I had them separated for breeding. They are all I plan to hatch. I've been selling duck eggs for eating and it's a lot easier at this point than caring for a ton more babies.
Well I stand firm you have to get up and move and force yourself to do it or you will be in bed forever. The longer you lay there the harder it is to get up. For my last two spinal surgeries the hospital required me to get up and walk and do some physical therapy the very next day. I made record recovery time and did well. My last neck surgery I was out feeding chickens 2 days after surgery. Couldn't lift over 5 pounds so I just did a little at a time. It's hard but its necessary. Your SIL needs to take the other stance and get that boy back to life or he will never heal. I was in a collar for four months after my first neck surgery. When the doctor finally took it off I couldn't even hold my own head up. The muscles had totally deteriorated. Then I got frozen shoulders on both shoulders from the trauma. And let me tell you that was a thousand times worse to treat than the spinal surgery. My incision wouldn't heal on my neck and kept opening up so the collar stayed on way too long. By the third surgery on my neck I feel like a pro at recovery.
I had a busy day yesterday and finally got so tired I just couldn't walk any more. I normally get really tired by evening but yesterday was just too much.
I moved a pen and a house and put the youngest geese and the baby ducks out in it. I couldn't stand the smell in here any longer. I had to get eggs ready and take them to town, then had to drive to Emporia and go back to the dentist. My new partial was eating a hole in me so it needed adjusted. I have to go back Monday again for some more adjustment. Then I had to get back home and move some chicks around and feed and water all the birds.
Then I started mowing until the drive belt broke on my mower. One more thing to cost me money!!!
I came in then and snuggled with my little misfit goose the rest of the evening. She had been outside with me working so she was ready to snuggle and sleep.

True on the moving part. Have a coworker who just had her knee replaced. Nurses put her leg in a machine to help move it as soon as she returned to her room from surgery. Then the therapist wanted her to get up and walk the next day to help with recovery.

Sorry you are having to go get your partials adjusted. I'm really not a fan to have my teeth worked on but I seem to have inherited my dad's side of the bad teeth no matter how I take care of my teeth. But I do try to make sure I do all I can so I don't have to endure any extra procedures that need to be done in my mouth. I hope you get all the stuff taken care of and get some rest! You are one busy lady!

I'm done with farm hands and done with breeding for some time. I'm sure a bunch of you are nodding and saying you knew this would happen. I'm just worn out.

Too many foxes unafraid of humans and making attacks all day long. Too many things to be done and not enough hours. I'm not decreasing my hours at work and it's killing me...especially since my eldest just graduated from high school and we had a steady stream of family through the house for the last 2 weeks...no room at the inn so I slept on the loveseat, hubby on the sofa A LOT over 15 days...and I'm too old for this crud.

I am selling all of my projects and keeping a handful of backyard birds. It's going to kill me emotionally, but I'm already worn the heck out physically, so it must be done!!

I put an ad up for grown birds if anyone wants to peruse. I'll make deals, especially if someone wants to keep a project going.

On another note- I'm delighted we're actually getting a bit of long wind-up to the heat!! It wasn't snow right into triple digits, though it can't decide what season it wants to be. I'm hoping it will remain mild for another month!! I don't like the moisture, but we need it, so KEEP ON RAINING!!

Nevermind the stinky patch of soil where the feed bowl sits...we need the rain! I do wish that didn't happen, though...like someone's making sour mash whiskey. UGH!! And I missed a whole bowl that was filled by rain the other day...soooooo stinky and sour!! Yuck!!

Sometimes you just need to put you on top of the priority, right?

Do what is best for yourself. There is nothing wrong in taking a break from it. Enjoy your backyard birds.

Need more rain!

Tweety, I wanted to tell you that my son and his wife went under contract on a house in Bel Aire. Looking on the map it looks like they will be really close to you. I will be making some trips down there to help them do some remodeling and stuff once they take possession. I might even get a chance to see you some time when I am there. My daughter in law starts medical school in July. My son is an engineer who works for the government and is getting transferred there to work on several projects. He still has a little time to work on the new hospital project at Ft. Riley. His boss chose him out of several engineers to hold over a little while. That is a very nice thing on his resume since he worked with many engineers who had more seniority.
It is really steamy out. I went out and worked in the garden for awhile. I got some cucumbers, pumpkins and watermelons planted and some more sweet potato plants. Hopefully it isn't too late to get produce. It's just not been warm enough to start them yet.
Oh and Tweety I have two of the chinese long cucumber plants my friend gave me. Very excited about them.
I guess I'd better get back out there and care for the birds. I've been cleaning in DHs bathroom. Nasty job.

Hi All,

I took advantage of the nice day and let the chickies forage in the front yard this afternoon.
Lots of scratching, flapping, eating, crowing and other fun chicken type activities abounded.
My oldest pullet(6 months old) has been laying for about 2 weeks now!! Yay!, fresh eggs!!
If anyone near Wichita has any other colors of silkies atleast 3 months old or so ,willing to part with let me know..I would love some nice partridge colored silkies!

Oh Danz, what a wonderful news! So glad your son and DIL got a house under contract. Infused to live in Bel Aire before moving to Kechi. We rented our Bel Aire house and moved north about 3 miles to where we are now. I'm looking forward to seeing when you come this way. So your DIL is starting med school in July? What a coincidence because my neighbor's daughter is also starting meds school in July as well. They maybe classmates.

I still haven't started the Chinese cucumber yet. I really should do ghat this weekend or it'll be too late.

With you coming this way, I may be able to get more birds from you!

LOL I'd love that of course! I'll let you know some time I will be there. I assume it will be mostly on weekends. I know my DIL will be busy 24-7 but my son will be off on weekends.
Is your neighbors daughter going to KU med? We have a white coat ceremony to go to at the end of July in Kansas City. I guess that is where they officially enter the medical field. It's been a long time coming. She got her batchelors degree, her masters, then went to pre-med and now is in medical school. I have no idea how all that works. It's a lot of years to go to school.
Speaking of chickens I loaded the incubators yesterday again. I am thinking that will be the final time unless I get some orders for custom hatches until the end of August. I'll still be very busy with all the birds I have here. I just need to take a break. I have a few I will still try to hatch. I know I'll still have turkeys and peafowl to hatch.
I got my HOAGBA news letter yesterday. There was an article in there about the weather affecting the birds this spring. It said that fertility was down, laying season was short or non existent, and birds were having some feather issues and stuff that normally didn't occur. I don't know about the feather issues but I have a peacock who has molted and my sussex hens are molting. Very weird. I have yet to hatch a peacock that lives. I hatched only one so far and it just never thrived. My Mandarins hatched only 3 babies and then this week I had one finally hatch out 6 more. I normally have 3 times that many hatch. Anyway the prediction is that as far as ornamental birds the numbers will be down and the prices will be up.
My pheasants are doing well for yearlings though so I should have some to offer.
As far as chickens go, they were late getting going but I've had tons of chicks. Once they got laying they really went to town.
I have a couple people coming for birds early afternoon. Then we are going to celebrate my son and his wife's birthdays this evening. One more busy day.

I would rather clean the chicken coop than my husband's side of the bathroom. Ha!

So true!

I got to see my son & his family today. My little grandson is getting so chunky & so darned cute. They weren't here very long, it was a short trip, but I was so glad to see them anyway. Babies grow so fast & change so much.

Today I let the 3 lambs out in the yard with the goats for the first time since I got them & other than some ornery butting by the one spoiled goat they did very well. I was able to get them all back in this evening by myself with the promise of food. Boy do they learn fast who the food person is!

I am having a really lousy day. I lost a hen that had a leg injury today. I knew she was going to die because she refused to eat or drink for the last several days. My little goose that I have in the house got into a bag of shavings and is fighting to breath. I tried to suck out any loose particles with no avail and I gave her oil but I'm afraid she is going to die. She fights physically like she is trying to get away from it and then collapses because she runs out of air. I feel so awful for her. This is exactly why I tell people not to put baby geese or ducks on shavings. They eat everything. I just had the bag sitting in the hallway and she got into it. I feel awful...not to mention heart broken.
Then I had sold some eggs on ebay and the buyer filed a case against me because they had no hatches. The eggs wouldn't even be due by this time. I am so done with people in general. This spring has brought out the worst of the worst for me. I do wonderful dealing with people I know or who I am familiar with but I'm finding strangers are often people wanting to use and get something for nothing.
Times like these make me wonder what on earth I am doing. Maybe I should just stick with a handful of birds and call it good. I work too hard for things to go this poorly.
Okay I am off my pity party for now. I do know I am done selling eggs on Ebay. This has been an awful experience and I didn't make any money at all. It would have been more economical to sell them as eating eggs.

Chicken Danz,
I am so sorry about your llittle goose. I will say a prayer that it is able to get rid of whatever it has inhaled. Losing any pet is never fun. People probably think me silly when I mourn the loss of a hen from my flock. But hey...these aren't their **** chickens.
Don't let the creep on eBay ruffle your feathers. Just bless it and move on. It takes all kinds I suppose. In cases like this I just let eBay know the circumstances and common sense should prevail.
