I need to be better about posting once in a while too. I like to stop by and read and then I get to the end of the thread where I should post and my mind goes blank .
danz- sure was good to see you today , DD is having fun with the ducklings they are in her room tonight in that tub. I think we'll move them out tomorrow . The others seemed to enjoy their new digs. I will try to get some pictures up soon so you can see them . After we got home we did a little housework and chores ,went to pick up a friend for a sleepover and then got out on the mower. I was mowing till it was so dark I could hardly see where I was going but I got it all done (whew!). Maybe I'm a little OCD but I think it's nice to get it all done on Friday so we can enjoy it over the weekend. And now I've dropped this phone about 5 times since I sat down so it's time for sleep. Later.
It was great to see you again too. Tell your DD I'm sorry it took so long to get her "birthday present" to her. I do hope she gets to enjoy them and maybe since they're young they'll imprint on her. And tell her thanks again for the card. I never get caught up. Having a weekend free to enjoy is something I can only dream about. But I'm working on it.

My hens have done some dirty tricks on me lately, I found a whole pile of eggs under one of the toppers we have where I had some straw stored. They were rather artistic about carving out a nice hole in the top of the straw to lay their eggs & they were from a bunch of different hens. I hate having to pitch eggs but these I had no idea how long had been there so the cats got a good treat.

dwink2, I'm glad the chicks made the trip well & are doing good. The lavender Ameraucanas you got will take a lot longer to be able to sex because of their peacomb. They have fooled me before & it's really hard to be sure till you start getting the saddle feathers on the roosters or they start crowing. The breeds with big combs you can tell usually fairly early since the cockerels get a bigger, pinker comb a lot earlier. I hope for girls for you. Don't be afraid to post even if it's just mundane everyday stuff. Danz & I don't have earth shaking news every day, but it's still nice to have people stop in & say hi anyway.

I had the same thing Trish. I couldn't fill my egg orders this week. I found broodies in the hen house but of course not in the nest. I found a huge pile of eggs inside a large bush complete with a hen. I found another big pile under a storm door leaning up against the shop etc etc. I have enough trouble gathering eggs to have to check a million places for them. Normally I have several girls that go lay in the barn and I haven't even looked there yet.

I too had chicks due yesterday but none had hatched last night. They were all viable a few days ago when I candled. I wonder if I got the dates wrong on them or something. That is so weird. My hatches are usually right on time. I had a group that didn't hatch last week and the whole group had died right before hatching. I had them in my regular hatcher but it is very spot on for temperature so I don't know what was going on. I hope that isn't the case here. I have several lavender and white orpington chicks in that group. I need to send them to my daughter. I had sent her the last of my eggs from selling the breeders and the post office had delivered the box looking like it had been run over by a freight train.
I have to get around today and go to town for a couple hours for an event today. Just the thought of having to dress up a little pains me.

My hatch is still ongoing today, I hope the rest get with it & get hatched. I hate having so many stragglers. It seems like the strong chicks hatch the first day & then there are always stragglers for another day.

friendshipstar, I started awhile back putting a little slip of paper beside the eggs in a group with the due date so I can keep all of the eggs straight. I write everything down in my notebook, but still had to go try to figure out which eggs I was supposed to get out to go to the hatcher so I started putting that little piece of paper in & it sure saves me time.

I finally got some pics of my lambs, so here is one where they're all together. From the left to right, Rambo, Oreo, & Milk. Oreo is my favorite due to her coloring & she is the sweetest thing too, she likes to be petted. My DH named the ram, he of course had to have a manly name, lol. They have been so good & are having a great time grazing in our yard right now since the pasture fence is still not done. We did buy the last roll of goat & sheep fence today for the project & 15 wood posts for corner braces.

Here's one for fun of the silly goats playing on top of their shelter, which is an old topper. They have the most fun jumping on top & knocking each other off, kind of a king of the mountain game.

I always write the hatch date on my eggs with a pencil when I set them. It's the easiest way for me. I write the breed initials on them when I gather them. When I load several eggs in the trays I usually try to group them together by breed so I can tell at a glance how many of what breed are due on what day. It would benefit me to have a notebook as well during spring so I can have a heads up once in a while.
I have a customer coming soon. I don't normally like doing business on Sunday but I was gone yesterday and missed her message.

I do the same thing, read and don't post. I hate to post the same thing over and over and there's just nothing new going on.

Cute! Oreo is my favorite, too!

Who said you can't just talk about what you want? It sure doesn't have to be chickens. Cheryl I always enjoy reading about your garden. To me you just seem like a master gardener and it always inspires me to get out there and work in mine. I still have so much to do out there. This humidity isn't condusive to me getting any gardening done for sure.
I sold a few more chicks this morning. She came for two and took 6. Maybe a few hundred would have worked better!
I need to get back out there and pump and clean the Mandarin pond. It's really green!!!

Wow that looks like a lot of work tatinatimom.
My work yesterday ended in total disaster. I moved a bunch of birds out to a grow out pen yesterday to make some room in the brooder. I had no idea that there was a storm moving in or anything. I didn't have a radio on or the TV on a local channel. We had a storm move in late and really pour and the wind blew like crazy. The first thing I did this morning was go out to check on those babies. I had hopes they had followed the ones already there into the coop. This was the first time any of those birds had been outside. Well I was in horror. I lost 15 very well started and freathered in babies. These birds were all between 6 weeks and 2 months. I also had them technically sold and sexed. They were smashed in the mud. Almost all of them were the rare partridge brahmas and there was a couple of English orpingtons. I just felt awful. Then of course later I felt sick because of one storm I lost over $300. I still have a handful of them laying on a towel in front of a space heater trying to get them to recover. I think I may save a couple of them with luck. I gave some chick saver to a few but mud ran out of their mouths. That indicates they probably have mud in their lungs and will die as well. Of course the other chickens that had already been in there had picked on some of them making it a bloody scene as well.
I wish I had been awake enough to realize the storms severity and the fact those birds might be out in it last night. It just goes to show you never learn enough to prevent every thing. I always worry about the birds in really bad storms but this was just awful.

so sorry Danz it is easy to think they will do the right thing, the earlier chicks probably didn't welcome them in. We had quite a bit of wind and heavy rain also, but just lost one tree limb. I have some cochin/silky chicks I posted on craigslist today and other chicks are doing great

OMG!!! Such terrible news!! I am so sorry to hear that!! I can't imagine the sheer horror of seeing that and how you feel! I am praying you will be able to save at least a few of them!!
That storm hit here too and it came out of nowhere. Had we not had the weather radio on and decided to go lock up the chickens an hr and a half early, just in case, I might have been dealing with loss myself. That thought makes me shiver! My prayers go out to you! There are no words. :(
