Terrabella how come you don't feed citrus? Just curious. I'm very envious of having produce to feed. I tried to get the stuff from the local grocery they toss, but they trash it and won't allow anyone to take it for liability reasons. I think it's pretty lame they lock their trash up so no one can get access. That is just a total waste. Too bad cause I'm not too proud to dumpster dive.
The whole amount of waste that goes on these days is insane. I could probably feed my birds just with the stuff from our small little town that gets tossed every day. Nothing gets trashed around here. I have some animal that will eat about anything I have in the way of garbage. If we had enough rain I needed to mow I even give the grass clippings to the birds. They love picking through them.

Citrus can interfere with the absorption of calcium which as we know is essential to egg and feather production. Plus they just don't seem to care for it, my son threw some orange pulp out to them without telling my and they barely pecked at it!
That is a shame that stores do that. I actually lost my very first job (at a pizza place) because I hated wasting food, and gave some extra pizzas that were destined for the dumpster to a young mother. They were perfectly fine but American attitude toward food can be quite absurd!
The only reason we get away with it is because we are a super small community! we actually had a freezer go out last night and we lost a HUGE amount of ice cream and frozen fruit. All of our regular customers that came in at the right time profited by taking home their pick of soupy ice cream and thawed fruit LOL. I may have nabbed a couple of pies that we couldn't refreeze for sale

!!!! I was seriously sick at the idea of tossing out all of that fruit and was glad that my boss agreed!

Well I guess I'm the odd one, I actually like cantaloupe. I don't eat it often but lately I've bought some for my chickens. It turns out that's their favorite treat. I know, spoiled birds. We bought them a small watermelon the other day & they've really been enjoying that on these hot days. They don't like it as much as cantaloupe though. Another thing they eat like candy is over-ripe bananas. I buy them for DH's snacks to take to work & he doesn't like them when they get too ripe so the chickens get them.

Hey I'm with you! I Adore cantelope!!!! :drool DH and I can almost clean out a hole one in one meal if it's a sweet one!

I think my birds would be packing their bags if they knew what some of your birds got to eat! Mine spend their days chasing down grasshoppers and coming running hopefully whenever I come out! They get the scraps of the fruit we eat and they Love it when MIL cans tomatoes!! She'll bring over all the stuff she cuts off and they go Crazy!!!! :cd

Yeah mine come running all the way across the yard when I step out the front door because they're coming to see if I brought them any treats. I wish I could find someone around here that grows cantaloupe & sells it, I would buy several for them. They would be the happiest chickens alive!

It's been one of those days so far. We had a major storm last night so all the feed pans were full of water. We really needed the rain but now it's going to be harder to get things moved to get the building work done. I want every thing yesterday and I can't seem to get things organized. I had a couple chicks that didn't make it through the storm. Judging from where they were laying they got over come with the rain.
All the birds look like mudballs today.
I have turkeys hatching. I have no idea how many but they are all done. I am just letting them dry right now.

Well hello everyone, Just reading the last two posts, one cantaloupe sounds really good right now and with the rain, I think we all needed it.
I just thought I would say hello to everyone, My mom hasn't been on in a while she's said and I just thought I would say hello. That little duck we got from you danz is getting so big! He's become all macho going around with our big girl. And out of curiosity I was wondering what the laying season was for the ducks. Just thought I would send a hello to everyone and well wishes as fall is coming around the corner.
