If you have a minute send me a PM and let me know how you are doing your pop doors on your building. I'm still on the fence about how to do mine in the big building.

I will take some detail pics and post them here, maybe others will find them useful.

Ok, Danz, here are some detail pics of my pop doors.





It is important that there is a lip on the outside so that predators can not get their claws under the door to pull it up.







I was using scrap from our decking for the door, this is 1/2 inch by 12 inch skirting. The notches it rides in are 1/2 x 5/8.



The deer were feeding the peas tonight, that hen and cock did not want to leave corn at the deer feeder.

Not on these doors, these lead out to runs and flight pens. They are the same size as my Adore 1 so I could screw one right onto it if I wanted. Peas are not like chickens that want to come in at night, mine will come into the pen at dusk but only to eat so I have to trick them every night with food so I can lock them up safe and sound for the night then after I feed them in the morning they get to free range all day. I think that these doors on the brooder house will be open most of the time.

Whew today was busy! I had to get my DH to cut down a dead tree that was in my way in order to put up my other pen, that was kind of a mess. He cut up all of the limbs into smaller pieces so I had a mess to clean up before I could even start putting the pen up. That tree was just in the way anyway & we got a little firewood out of it so I guess it's going to be used for something. It took me from when DH left for work till time to feed all the critters to put the pen up & just as I was finishing up the goats & sheep came to the field gate yelling at me to let them in so they could eat. I was running a bit late after working on the pen but at least I got it up thank goodness, one more thing to cross off my list. I have to put wire all around the outside panels still & cover the top before I can move anything in there. I hooked this one onto the pen the BRs are in & I plan to move the RIRs in there. As soon as I get this pen all done & the birds moved I'll be working on painting my breeder coop before it gets too cold. There's always something to do around here that's for sure.

I spent most of my day working with a sink mount which I didn't get done yesterday. I had to leave about 4:0o to go somewhere and didn't get back until dark. I forgot I had the light brahmas and one of the grow out pens free ranging and didn't shut them up, so they are all out searching for goodies this morning. It doesn't hurt them a bit. Some are breeder birds though so I wouldn't want to make a habit of it.
KSKingBee thanks for the pictures. that is pretty much what I was thinking of doing. I'm so glad you posted that about the lip. I don't have to worry about predators since they will be in an outside pen but I can see it will also cut some drafts etc. I wish I could come up with some smooth finished metal that wasn't heavy to make the actual door out of. I haven't found anything that is the right weight etc. I just worry about wood products swelling or warping.
My cat that had kittens didn't show up to eat yesterday. I'm afraid something got her. I haven't seen the kittens yet and I can't hear them either so I don't know if she moved them or what. Searching that out is first on my agenda today. I'm sure not having good luck getting mousers here.

The thing about pop doors you can’t make them too tight. The wood will expand and contract with hot & cold, rain & snow. But it looks like you have left enough slop in the channel. Nice job looks better than mine… LoL.. What is the weight of your doors? I used 3/4 “ plywood for my pop door. It has some nice weight to it.

I was lucky having the scrap decking material left over, being composite it won't swell or rot and it is heavy and slick making it close and stay closed much easier. You might look into ordering a piece of it if you have more than a couple of doors to build. If you call about it ask for 1/2 x 12 inch fascia skirting. I called it skirting before but I think the right term is fascia skirting.

I'll have at least 14 doors to build so yeah I will need quite a bit. It sounds like it would be an excellent material if I could find a way to keep cost down. Did you get that at Menards? Just curious where to look. If I put an eye hook or something on the top do you think it would hold without ripping out if I didn't add reinforcement?

Being a composite material the weight is probably the same as 3/4 wood but what I like best is that it is really slick and slides nicely in the channel and little claws will have a lot of trouble trying to pull it up. Not to mention rot proof and hard for rats to chew. Thanks for the thumbs up, I'll post the pics of the finished building eventually, I am way too slow getting things done.
