Consolidated Kansas

Hi Chooks, it was nice to see you drop in again. There aren't too many of the old people on here any more, some moved away & some drifted away. Only 8 projects huh, I'm really only working on one project as far as the birds go. I have way too many breeds around here though, I may have to cut back on a few by fall.

I did get out earlier today & get my breeder coop cleaned out & fresh pine shavings put in. That was a big accomplishment for me today.

Picked up 4 dozen eggs tonight for our classroom hatch. 2 dozen Americaunas, 1 dozen Rhode Island Reds, and a dozen Silkies. It will be really neat for the kids to see how different the eggs can be.
I have read that Bantams hatch earlier that standards, whats everyone else's experience say? Should we expect the Silkies to make their arrival first?

That actually depends on the type of bantams you have. Seramas, old English, Olandsk Dwarfs, etc that are really small will often hatch at day 19. Silkies will depend on breeding. There's so much variance in them they could arrive anywhere from day 19 to day 21. And then again the humidity, your particular incubator etc make a difference.

Oh, I love it!!! I used to get the little dozen egg incubator from our extension center and let my daycare kids experience egg hatching. Not really impressed with the performance of those incubators but we always got a few chicks and had lots of parents late for work on hatching day. And they'd usually call grandparents, spouses, etc. Everyone loved it. What age is your classroom?

We are hatching in two 3rd grade classrooms. I'm just helping out the classroom teacher (who is super nervous!) but the kids were so excited when I walked in with the eggs! I'll let you all know how it goes.

Yes do let us know how it all goes. I can imagine the kids will be over the moon when they hatch.

Of course they are excited. Kids need more of that kind of thing in the classroom, and they will never forget it.
And I bet the teacher will want you back next year after she sees all the wonderful teaching opportunities she can plan around it.

When do you all candle for the first time? When will it be most probable that I'll be able to see what's going on being a newbie? My eggs have been in for 4 days now and I'm still working to try to keep the humidity regulated but I think I'm getting it figured out.
