Consolidated Kansas

It was good meeting you, Danz! Got home late and London killed my favorite BLRW hen today. I'm So Mad!!!! Willow has been in heat and I didn't want her bred so she's been penned up. London obviously got bored while we were gone and decided to play with the chickens. Or maybe he was mad at me for penning Willow up. He's been so good I thought he'd been broken of playing with chickens. :hit.
On the upside we got my new doelings home and I need to feed them yet. They're SO CUTE!!!! :love
DH is so enthused about hatching - especially the two red golden pheasant eggs from Danz that he's considering letting me get a second bator! :weee ;) don't know if we actually will or not tho. Well, I better run. Baby goats are screaming fo their food.

Our power is back on -- it was out for 39 hours. With 57 chicks it was an unfortunate event but DH and the generator came to the rescue and the kids and I moved the chicks to the insulated part of the shop with the EcoGlow 50 that pulls very little electricity, and all was well. It took us 3.5 hours to realize the power was out but we didn't lose even one chick!

Danz, glad you had a good trip and are back safe and sound. Hope you feel better soon.
I'm sorry about your power outage, thank goodness you had a generator. I wouldn't be so lucky if that happened here since we don't have one of those.

Prairie I'm sorry about your hen, pups make mistakes at times. It doesn't make it better but just know that some of us have gone through that with our GPs. Mine are over 2 years old now & don't do that any more, but they did when they were younger.

You will have to post pics of your new doelings, we love pics of babies! I need to get some new pics of my lambs. Speaking of lambs, I just had to laugh at my youngest lamb this evening. I went out & let all of the goats & sheep up to their pens & they run as fast as they can to get the grain. The lamb ran into the pen & went to his bucket & drank a big drink of milk & then ran over to the feed pan & ate some grain & ran back to the milk bucket & got a drink. He repeated that a couple of times, it was so funny. I have him cutting back some on milk now since he is eating grain & grazing.

It must be nice to have a DH interested even in chickens or hatching, mine could care less.

I was busy today working on my rabbit hutch I got. This thing is made like a tank it's so heavy. I ended up having to take the top board off & then the boards over the places where the wire is nailed down. I had to peel the wire back to the middle as well so I could add a middle divider wire in there so I can put two rabbits in it. That ended up being quite a project. There were 32 screws holding those little boards on, kind of overkill I would say. It took me forever to take all of them out & then put them all back when I was done. I will almost have taken this thing apart & put it all back together by the time I'm done. I just have to make the doors for each side now & put hinges on & I'm done. Oh & I'm using leftover roofing from my breeder coop for the top too. This thing should last a long time. I'm cutting back on numbers of rabbits I'm keeping too & I have one more buck to sell yet. After that I'm where I want to be, that is until the babies come on the 9th.

I have a few white silkies and their laying eggs one hen lays on the eggs for about two hours and then gets off of them does that mean she's about to go broody or is she broody

Glad it's back on. I did see some downed trees and stuff. My son had both of his competition grills moved off his deck. Wish I had seen you Deerfield.

How did the dogs eyes turn out, BTW? It was great to see you again as well. I hope the birds are all doing well. Are the eggs in the incubator yet? Happy hatching. I hope they do well.
Trish I'll bet that was adorable with your lamb. Glad he is eating grain now.
It's sure chilly feeling outside. I hope it warms considerably. I noticed we have rain forecast for every day this week. Not my kind of weather for sure!!! I wish I had more garden planted. It's a little early for most of the stuff I grow though.

Nope I wouldn't assume she is going broody. Usually if they are going broody they sit like a pancake and often growl and refuse to get up. But a hen can go broody at any time too. You'll know when that happens for sure.

I haven't caught up with posts yet but wouldn't you know it, I have been wanting silver pied peahens. Seems they are hard to find! Anyhow cl guy has some yearling hens for $75 and will meet in Overland Park this weekend!

I think I am gonna cry! I just got here, I know I know, stupid to be crying on vacation but why couldn't he have sold those birds earlier or later? No one sells just HENS!

Oh, don't feel too bad, they were not Silver Pied hens. I'll get you some eggs when you get back. By the way, I have sold quite a few of the mature hens I had planned on selling, think I will keep the ones I have left though. It's pea math, one hen $150, keep her and sell her 30 eggs she will lay this year at $10 each or all the chicks for $20 and you still have the hen. At $150 she is too cheap. Sold four trios of yearlings this week!

My pen is getting bigger! Look what I set this week;

14 pea eggs! I have a broody chicken that I am going to put another six eggs under today. After this test hatch I will start selling pea eggs.

I found out before the dog show that the same vet who checked Lexis eyes last year was there again. We need a second opinion by a different vet so I'll have to take her to Denver. :/
My best mouser mama cat didn't come last night when we called the kitties to pen them up for night. She has 6 tiny kittens and I'm very worried!! She's been able to take care of herself until now but.... She hasn't come this morning either. I'm praying she'll come home yet. I need her kittens and she's my best mouser.

I am avoiding any store with chicks. I don't want any more hatchery chicks, and I'm fairly certain at least one of my hens will go broody this spring/summer, but dang they are cute.

We stopped at Orschlens last night on the way home and there was not a chick one to be seen or had. That's ok, we have another hundred in the brooder that hatched this weekend.

Lookin good KsKingBee, good luck on your hatch. I have eggs that need to go in the hatcher today, I have to go down & do that in a bit. These will be my first chicks to hatch for orders this year, I hope they hatch well.

Yeah I didn't see but 3 meat chicks in our Orscheln's in Ark City either when I was in there. People must be grabbing them up as fast as they come in. I haven't been anywhere else where they sell chicks other than TSC & they had very little when I went in there Thurs. in Augusta. I'm sure not looking for any either, I have an incubator full of eggs & 10 little BO chicks already in my brooder as well as a baby gosling.

Happy Easter everyone! I'm spending a very quiet weekend by myself, my DH went to Missouri to see his family & I had to stay here to take care of birds & animals. That's OK, I got quite a bit done yesterday & hope to get more done today.

Danz, I hope you feel better soon.
