Consolidated Kansas

Venymae,
Thank you yes we do and this way she isn't in any more pain.

Sharon,
Very true and we are both saying that and while we are sad that it happened to her it was a great relief to know that was wrong and she didn't have something that would require having to put down everyone.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is always hard to lose our geathered friends. I do believe that you are lucky to not have something that won't spread.

I acquired a half dozen pullets right before Thanksgiving. They looked healthy when the got here but a couple of them got croupy a few days after they got here. They recovered and I thought that it was just probably dust from their quarantine area or stress. Now, after they are in with my flock they are doing well but I have since lost 3 of my older hens with respiratory problems. They just get real croupy sounding and a couple of them have had pasty eyes. I have been treating with Vet RX and I thought they were doing better. Then within a few days 3 of them have just died. I have two now that are really bad so I have them seperated and am keeping a close eye on them.

I fear that I may have brought something bad into my flock. I just wish now I had waited to spring and bought chicks. I am at my wits end as to what to do. Any ideas?

There is always a risk of that with chickens. One group has protection against a bug that another doesn't, and boom, everyone is sick. Good luck with them. It might be a good idea to have K-State figure out what the bug was in case it requires more action on your part. Some of those respiratory viruses are NASTY.

Lots of people have never heard of or seen Breda Fowl, so I thought I'd post some pictures of my 8 month olds. The black pullet is laying, and her eggs are a lovely translucent white. The gray pullet may be laying, but I haven't caught her on the nest yet. The cockerel is magnificent. He and the Araucana cockerel are bff's and "share" the younger birds in the coop. My head roo is older and doesn't seem to mind as long as they leave his hens along. LOL

The photo-bomber on the right is my big dog, Red. The gray hen (Ethyl) is in the background.

This is a closer pic of the cockerel. Bertram.

And his lady, Lucy.

And his other lady, Ethyl.

This is Ernesto the Araucana, but I can't get him to hold still for pictures. He has all colors on his dark feathers -- green, purple, blue -- gorgeous coloring.

I thought Bert and Ernie fit them since they are inseparable.

I wouldn't necessarily assume that you carried in a sickness from the new birds. It could have been brought in by wild or migrant birds, or mice or other animals. But it is very possible it was brought in with the birds. The seller could have been having an outbreak and sold his birds to keep from loosing every thing. People just aren't very honest.
In order to find out what is going on through K-state: first you need to go to this website and read through all the information and fill out the necessary forms.
http://www.ksvdl.org/

You have to freeze a newly deceased bird and have it packed in a cooler and shipped overnight to K-State or deliver it in person. The forms must be included to have necropsies done. It sounds cheap when you read it but the fee is simply for them to start a diagnosis. Every test and then lab work costs extra. Also you have to have a vet willing to tell you the results of the tests when they get them. They will not give a layman the information even if you are paying for it. Just initially without further labs you can count on spending over $100. Any further labs which require culturing are going to cost you even more. If you have a lot of birds and valuable birds it's certainly worth it. But for a normal back yard flock probably not. I sold many birds at one time and started loosing my bird left and right, starting with the ones in the brooder. Well it was my stupidity when I well known chicken farmer had come and bought nearly every bird I'd sell. I let him walk in the pens and brooder to help catch the birds. Biggest mistake ever in my life. I lost hundreds and hundreds of dollars because of that mistake.

I found out later his entire flock had been wiped out by sickness, so that is why he was buying birds from me.
I did at that time, submit a pullet to K-state. About a month and couple hundred dollars later, I learned what they had and thank heavens had a vet available who would help me get the necessary meds to treat it. Lesson learned for sure. I didn't pay for extra cultures which would have cost me even more.

I missed the pictures yesterday Sharol. The birds look great. @TakenBackBre has my older cockerel who looks almost identical to Ernie. He is a gorgeous bird.
I'm getting lots of Araucana eggs now but the Breda who had been laying when I wasn't hatching, have decided to take a break. Crazy birds. I have a very pretty mottled Breda hen. I think that is something very unique. I would love to be able to mark her eggs and see if I could breed mottled Bredas as a lone color. I just don't have the room for any more projects.
Since the weather has gotten so lousy cold I am thinking I need to downsize even further. Those hours out in the cold are just too much.
We finally finished our last Christmas get together yesterday. I am relieved. Time to get back to normal. Whatever that is.
DH leaves for Florida tomorrow to go to his Dad's funeral. I sure hope nothing else breaks or falls apart while he is gone. I tend to handle most things myself but kind of panic when I think that I won't have help if something major happens.

You would have to call the state Vet, Kansas Dept. of Agriculture, here is their contact info:
Manhattan Office
320 Research Park Drive
Manhattan, Kansas 66502
(785) 564-6700
(785) 564-6777 (fax)
They could tell you how to go about getting a bird tested. I have not personally had to do that, maybe Danz can jump in sometime today & answer.

We had our late Christmas this weekend with my son & family, it was nice to have everyone together finally. We took the girls down with us to OKC so they could see their brother & dad. Our little grandson is going to be 2 in Feb, he is growing so fast! He's just starting to say words & kept saying WOW when he got excited, it was just too cute. I don't get to see him as often as I would like due to my DH's work schedule, he works 7 days a week a lot of the time. I'm glad he was able to be off to go this time.

The countdown is on for my total knee surgery, I'm getting more nervous the closer it gets.

Those are some pretty birds sharol. I guess you were posting at the same time as I was Danz.
