Consolidated Kansas

I'm about 30 miles east of Dodge City. I would like to find a Polish cockerel in Kansas if possible, and silver penciled rocks. Thank you for any help or advice. We have 10 hens, 2 roos, 4 dogs, 4 cats, 1 spider and 3 human kids. I've written here before, but I dont believe I ever introduced myself..

I raise Silver Penciled Rocks & will have chicks before too long. I do have one order to fill but have 3 hens sitting on eggs right now so if they hatch them all there should be plenty. I am a long ways from you though. I only know of one other person who has them & his are not old enough to lay yet. Maybe you could find someone traveling down this way to bring you some.

It was a crazy weekend, but I did manage to grab a picture of my other girls.

This is Rin. I think she is the easiest for my to identify but...I'm new to this and I could definitely be wrong:

This is Crimson. She is one of our best egg layers!

And just a little chick to hopefully brighten up your Monday...

Danz, what do you use for a wormer? Also what you are dipping, and what for?

I use ivermectin injectable. 4cc per gallon of water. Then every couple of times I will use Safeguard goat drench in the same dosage but add sugar to the water. Both of these are used 3 days in a row with no access to any other water. I use the Safeguard occasionally because it will also get capilliary and cecal worms where ivermention will generally kill all the normal ones.
I try to worm the first of every season just so I can remember. Lots of people don't worm that often but in warm weather in particular, it really makes a huge difference.
I also use Safeguard on my peafowl by giving them a dose by mouth. The rule there is to worm them any time they are handled or if anyone has down wings. I can't remember if you have Peafowl or not. Safeguard should also be used on turkeys but it seems to work okay in water for them.
I use Permetrin II as a spray or a dip. I think it's easier to dip than spray because of all the birds I have. If you spray you simply spray under each wing and on their vent area. When I dip I mix up about the same proportions in a 5 gallon bucket of warm water and simply dip them in and leave their head out. Directions for the spray is on the container. Then I spray their housing as well concentration on corners and seams where framing overlaps. Which I still need to do. I have to do the outside birds in a few days when it is warmer out again.

So on first thought I would think barred rock. But looking at her more closely I tend to think she is a Dominique. I can't see her comb well. If it sort of stands up in a single comb with some points she would be a barred rock. If it is flat and looks kind of like a sliver of a walnut she would be dominique.

This is a Rhode island red.

Hi! My first post here on BYC. My name is Kait, I live in Leavenworth Kansas. I am a soon-to-be chicken momma with LOTS of questions!! I'm hoping to find some local chicken lovers to guide me. I know I want good layers that dont go broody often that are hardy for our Kansas winters. From my reading Wyandottes look like they might be good?
I am inside city limits so I have to be careful about sexing - roosters aren't allowed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome! We have people here with varying experience & we would be glad to answer your questions. You may get more than one opinion but you can choose what works for you that way. I have quite a few Wyandottes in my laying flock, they are good layers & do well in all seasons. If you want layers that will most likely lay all year long go for Leghorns. They are more flighty than other breeds, but excellent layers. I have found another breed that are excellent layers throughout the year, Rhodebars. They aren't as easy to find but some people raise them, I do. Also, other good layers are the sexlinks, either red or black. Those are laying machines & lay a lot of eggs. They will burn out faster due to laying so much. Chickens only have so many eggs to lay in their lifetime & when they're gone that's it. Rhode Island Reds or Production Reds like the hatcheries sell are good as well as Plymouth Barred Rocks. If you want blue or green eggs get an Easter Egger or two. They don't lay as well as the others but it's fun to add some color to your egg basket. The only place you're going to get sexed chicks from is from a hatchery or farm store & the farm stores do get them mixed up a lot of the time & people get roosters anyway. What other questions do you have?

Awesome! Thank you so much!
We are looking to have a pretty tiny flock. 4-5 hens maximum. I know "chicken math" happens, but how few is too few?
Also, we have small children that I am hoping to teach to help for eventual 4H participation so I'm hoping for friendly birds. Are Leghorns as friendly as the Wyandottes?
I'm also interested in seeing other inside-city coops and runs. I'll try and take a picture of our property.

I'm thinking of incorporating that old goat pen into the run somehow. Thoughts?

I'm a farm girl, who married a city boy. Now we live in the BIG city. We live in a suburb of KC and I have chickens by accident and chickens on purpose. I'm looking forward to meeting fellow Kansans!
