He was using a 220 conibear trap in a bucket. There's no way I would use that set near any kind of domestic animal. You are right. The bait could lure someones cat or dog in there and they would have the same fate as that raccoon. In your situation I would use a live trap and dispatch the coon.

I had some traps like that a few years back for some beaver in our pond. Frankly, that trap was a little tough for me to set and I was always a little afraid I was going to break my arm with the dang things. They are very strong traps.

You could trap them

Daren you might want to try this.

You may caught some other unwanted critters.

Wow, that trap freaked me out! But on the up side- there is no trying to shoot them.. it's all done in like 2 seconds! Wow. I'd just be sad if the neighbors cat got in it. Well... maybe. heh

It would be one less set of prints down your windshield. That seems to be a big con, it does not care if its a pet.

yeah, I don't think I could just let it kill anything and actually, all kidding aside, my neighbors cat spends a lot of time in my barn. Our cars sit in our garage- so no worries about footprints, but my truck does sit in the barn, but it's my work truck, no biggie. The cat gets up there, but I've never been bothered by it. He keeps the mice down and I don't actually have to own him or care for him.

I can't believe how much cooler our temps have been the last couple of days- it's been so nice! I've gotten no more work done on the coop, I've had other things going on. Last night went to Century II and watched the live play "The Little Mermaid"- it was VERY good. It rained most of the morning yesterday- so this morning is my chance to do something, but I'm feeling like taking a break this morning and working on it tonight. Seymore is eating the layer crumbles really well. Can chickens really get those huge pellets down? That was an option, but it looked like it would be no fun to eat.

I like feeding pellets rather than crumbles because the birds waste a lot less. Yeah they do get them down. Chickens can take a huge piece of food in their mouths. They're gizzards do all the work of breaking it up. We got cheated out of rain AGAIN yesterday. Maybe tonight and tomorrow we'll get some. I so loved the cooler temps yesterday though.
I'm suddenly feeling the crunch of fall coming and I am so unprepared. This summer has been awful for getting things done. Just too darned hot!

Agreed! I felt that little bit of panic as it felt like Fall yesterday. I have to get my heaters set up for the horses again and there are a couple of projects to finish (besides the coop!). I LOVE Fall, however I don't love that is precedes winter. My apples haven't gotten too big- I've been watering the trees really well this summer, but I think it's just still been too hard on them. Ah well, I'm still up for fresh apples, even if they are small.

Hey...if anyone was curious...I received my order from Murray McMurray today! 26 happy healthy chicks! I know I got slapped around a little on this thread for ordering this time of year (and I'm sure the cooler weather we are having helped)! Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with McMurray! Hope they turn out okay!
