In Kansas, farm land is appraised at "use" value, though, so if you can show that you are using it for any sort of agriculture, the land appraisal will be really cheap.

Yeah Hawkeye! I am so excited for you! I hope they all made the trip well. The weather has certainly been cooperative.

Rittert, Sounds like you have some arthritis building up in your hands. Unfortunately you can't get disability for just your arms even though they are essential. People who have never had to do without them don't understand. I always told people to tie their hands behind their back and see what they could do, or even tie their dominant hand behind their back. Then they'd know what it was like. Then you add an extreme high degree of pain to that. The only treatment I've been given other than surgery that worked at all, was having a splint put on for like 6 weeks. It really works, but the problem is after you take it off it just goes back to the way it was after you use it. After a couple of decades I have just learned to live through the pain. I can't take anything but tylenol and it doesn't help reduce the fluid. I often sit with a heatpad on my hands in the evening. It seems to help move some of the fluid out and reduce the pain a little.

okay, I'll post pics in a little while. But first of all, I have a chick that isn't doing well. It's a WCB Polish. She's drinking, but seems weaker and more sleepy than the others. Also, I've been looking her over and her belly doesn't look or feel the same as the other chicks. It's like she's big and fat or swollen? I wiped her down because I felt a crusty under her and thought maybe it was poo, but instead, when I got closer, it looks like a little stub with dried blood? I'm really worried about her. She is walking around and she is drinking a lot. Is she drinking too much? I put the Sav A Chick in the water when they first got home -- as they all were very lethargic and not looking great. Now they are all running around and drinking and eating. Some of them are flat out laying on their sides, but when they get run over, they jump up again and find a better spot. So I'm assuming they are okay. Do you think this one I'm worried about could be malformed????

Okay, I had to put my two silkies in chick jail. They were being way too mean and the little ones couldn't even drink or walk around with out being pecked and run over and shoved. The silkies were running around at top speed and were bowling tiny chicks over. So they are now in a little box and I'll let them out in about an hour when the little ones have a chance to get some strength and do some more eating and drinking. Here are pics! The WCB Polish picture is not the one I'm worried about- just one of the girls. There are two silver laced wyandottes, and 2 barred rocks-- they are MONSTER chicks compared to the Polish! It's funny to see how big they are in comparison.

Okay-- here is the chick I'm worried about. She seemed bright eyed when I pick her up. But when I set her back down, she goes right back to sleep. OH! And I just picked her up and she threw up water. She's just drinking and drinking. She seemed okay after she threw up the water. That's bad, right? I took a close up picture of her belly/bottom-- to show how big and swelled or poufy it is. It does not feel like the other chicks. Feels like she is carrying around a water balloon in her bottom.

So hard to resist!! These little beauties are in my garage. My DH would throw a fit if they were in the house. My dad used to brood them in the house when I was a kid. They are plenty warm though. I already moved two out of the heat when they just sat there panting.

Loralee I still can't help but say Awww when I see baby chicks even when I've always got them.
Watch that little chick. I know there is a name for that "soft" belly but I don't recall it right now. I've noticed the chicks that I've hatched like that don't thrive as well. Give it 24 hours and see if it picks up. I assume that the place you ordered from will give you a credit or refund for a chick that doesn't thrive. I hope it comes around.
Those little babies run around and then just look like they are dead for awhile while they take a power nap. I think that is so cute. I always look really closely to see if they are still breathing or not. It still freaks me out.
This is so exciting! I'm glad you finally have your babies.

Cute little fuzzies you've got there, Hawkeye! Congrats! Yes, just keep an eye on that little polish. Sometimes the weaker ones will get run over by the healthier ones, and that doesn't help them at all.

Also, you will want to be very carefull about putting those silkie chicks back in there if they are pecking and running over the new guys. It may take longer than a couple hours for the new guys to catch up, in which case you may want a "plan B" for keeping them separated. Perhaps just a little cardboard divider in the brooder for a while. You will just have to wait and watch to see what you need to do.

Sharol- Yes, all my ground is taxed as agricultural, but even at that, a little makes a lot of difference when you are talking about paying taxes for something that is just a hobby and costs more money than what you make off of it.

I'm headed back out to do some more painting.
