Yes they do have the beautiful blue ears. They do show up better on the partridge though because the skin on the blacks is so dark. I've noticed they aren't as bright as they get older, even though these guys are only 7 months old or so.
I went out and got chicken wire hung on the top half of the Mandarin pen. I had a 50 foot roll and ran out. So that means another trip to buy some more chicken wire. I also pumped out the pond and there is a pile of leaves in there. If I get the rest of the chicken wire hung tomorrow I will put the netting on top so the darned leaves won't be falling in the pond so much.
I'm kind of like you, Hawkeye. I've spent so much time working on this project but now it seems like the little things don't show any progress.
DH made the most adorable shelter for the Mandarins and Woodies today. It is just something to get them out of the extreme cold if the temps go low like last year. I asked him to hinge the top so I could drop a light in there if I needed it. It's just a short thing about 3 feet long but it reminds me of a little 4 car garage. I will have to stain it if they are going to use it, but I would rather paint it really cute.
I have to get another bulkhead for my filter I am making. After I got it together I figured out we grabbed one with the wrong size interior threads. Rather than change all the piping and fittings I just need to get another one that is the right size. Otherwise I would have that filter already in there and functioning by now.

I'm at my sister's right now. There has been SO much going on. I did my first APA/ABA show Saturday. I don't think I did too bad for a beginner. One pullet got 2nd under both judges.
The other got 3rd and 4th. There were a number of "Master Exhibitors" there, including showing cochins like I had. I learned a lot; do's and don'ts, general knowlege, and a "technique" that has a very funny story which I hesitate to put here since this is a family site!
Met a fellow BYC'er yesterday and had a Great Visit.

I bought a few more chickens while I was at the show. I got a young black rosecomb cockerell from a reputable breeder. He is still young, so it is hard to tell what he will turn out like, but I think he is going to be pretty nice.
I also found a trio of silver duckwing old english. To me, they are GORGEOUS! I just couldn't resist, even though I had no intentions of adding another breed at this point. My sis who raises OE's helped me pick out what she felt were the best hens (they all looked alike to me) and we both agreed on the best rooster. At the end of the show I was absolutely delighted to find out that one of the silver duck wing old english roosters that this breeder had entered in the show won BEST OF SHOW!
I think I am off to a good start with these.
I get to meet Trisha44 today. After that it will be some pretty intense jelly making activities.
Danz-I'm still planning on seeing you Thursday. I'm not exactly sure of the time, but it will probably be early to mid afternoon. I'm sure looking forward to it!

Hawkeye, I have a bunch of Silkie eggs set, and mine will be Blue, Black, Lavender, Partridge, Blue Part., and Splash. I'm going to be hatching on the first week of November. MIne are all bearded, so they'll look a bit different than Danz's. Let me know if you want any of them. For that matter, Taz, are you set on Silkies again, now? I'll have a bunch.
Danz, I'm sorry your mom isn't doing so well. I'm hoping she's better.
I'm still fighting the illness. Sorry I haven't been around much, and if I've missed an email from you, please hit me again- I'm getting nearly 50 emails a day for work, so it's easy to miss them.
On the hawk issue- this is the worst year I've ever experienced, and I wonder if it wasn't hard on bunnies and other normal prey for the transient prey birds. I've lost 4 so far, and those losses were within about 10 days. I took all of my most valued birds out to the farm, because they're SAFER in the country right now! I have that property mostly covered by avian netting.
I think that if I'd had the energy to have a few scarecrows out there and move them around every morning, that would have worked. I couldn't convince my whiny dogs to stay outside for any length of time, and can't bear to annoy the neighbors with the barking, so that's hopeless. I know in the past, things that move freaked out the hawks, so balloons, hats and jackets (on hangers) on ropes, and BIG stuffed animals with part of the body on a rope or string so it moves a bit work well. I just couldn't get myself up to do any of that preventive stuff. I'm burning up all of my energy just doing the regular chores and coughing.
SOOOOOOOO done with this crud. At least I know it's viral leftovers and not histoplasmosis or something. I'm paranoid and make them check that stuff whenever I get ill.
Enjoy the prolonged fall, folks. Get your chores for winter done now!! Collect all the leaves off folks' curbs- they make great bedding and you can dump them on the snow so the bird have good places to root around when it gets deep. Much better for them than frozen snow and poop for long weeks. If you have a power source, look for sales on heated dog bowls- you can fill them most of the way with sand and use them to keep your plastic waterers thawed. If you don't have power, collect aluminum cans and discarded storm windows for a passive solar heater for the waters. This could be used to heat the coops, too.
4 or 6 mil clear construction plastic can be stapled to all window areas for good natural light with a windbreak and greenhouse effect during the day. It can also be looped over runs where they meet the coop to provide a hoop-like shelter from wind and snow. I use the 5" garden staples to push folded edges of plastic into the ground while holding down a 12' length against the outside of the fence right up by the coop with a 2"x4". I then bring it up over the fence, use a 5 gallon bucket of sand with a 2x4 in it and another across it like a 'T' to support the plastic in an 'A-frame' at the same height as the coop roof. I bring the plastic back down to the ground on the other side. This is a great, cheap shelter for them and it heats up in the daytime, even with the wide-open end that isn't connected to anything!
You can also collect bagged leaves to make a windbreak along your runs, since hay is so expensive this year.
I think that's all I've got for now...better put up a post for the other folks on BYC to get stuff done for winter...cut and paste to the rescue!!

I finally move my chickens and rabbits to are new place, its nice having them close by. I had a hen catch some chicks, should I be worried about them getting to cold or will mother hen take care or them? I have made an area that only the chicks can get into and have put water and crumble feed, Should I get medicated feed for these chicks?
One of my Sussex pullets that has not even started lay yet is protecting and caring for these chicks, she lets them under her and when one was on its back and could not get up she would grab its leg to get it off its back.

ByNature, If your hen and chicks are together and not with the other chickens they won't need any additional heat. She will take care of that. I would recommend medicated feed since this is a new place and you don't know if there has been coccidiosis on the place prior to you moving there.

I'd so love to paint the little shelter for the Mandarins but I'm afraid they wouldn't use it if I did. I was thinking of maybe painting a graphic on it some day though. I have to keep everything they use as close to natural colors as I can. I am so anxious to get this done. I have 4 more nest boxes to finish building as well, plus get them all hung. It seems like it just never ends.

We are renting an excavator today so we can do some more digging around here and get it set it place someday soon I hope.

Renee, Maybe you should go to a specialist with that congestion. That is how my Mom's problems started out. She has a cystic lung disease, Bronchiectasis, that was caused by a prolonged deep infection. There is no cure, It is heartbreaking to see what it has done to her. Her doctors just didn't notice until it was way too late. They just kept trying to treat normal bronchitis and sinus problems.

Hawkeye. Just hatched a black silkie chick. My first.
Well, I went to Lowes and bought quite a bit more things for the coop. Whew! I spent $136 just on the underground wire that will go from my house to the coop. They only had it in 100ft (too short) or 250 ft (too long...). I checked into buying it off the spool- but I would spend twice as much on the 150ft I needed by buying it off the spool. So now I'll have an extra 150ft or more of ground wire. BUT.... here's what I'm thinking. I'm wanting to put in another barn anyway next year, or my green house... so I'll use it up.
Renee- silkies... oh my! I think I like the bearded ones better... are they the ones that have a fuller head on them? I don't know what to do now. Would they get trompled by my older chicks now? My chicks just turned 3 weeks today.
