Consolidated Kansas

I am SW of Topeka about 30 miles.

There are 6 silkies. 4 hens - a white, a splash (I think) a dark - black? frizzle and a lighter gray frizzle. The white and splash both look to be decent quality and gave nice big top knots. The splash can't see from under hers. The frizzles (I was told one was a sizzle?) are smaller and have curly "bad perm type feathers.

The two roos are both black, both obviously crosses, one is frizzle with interesting wind swept feathers.

At least one of the hens has been laying a few eggs.

I have not had them very long, and put them into an open type summer pen, with plans to make a coop for them. A plumbing problem took the coop money. If I get them into the barn, they should be ok for the winter in there. I just have so many things to do to get ready for winter.

I do not know a lot about silkies, but I think that with a nice unrelated roo, this is a nice flock of hens for the blue/black/splash coloring, and with frizzles. Someone that knows more could confirm that.

This darn wind!!!

I agree, I hate this wind, I haven't even let my chickens out of their run today because they hate it too! I had plans for going to Wichita today, but I think I'll just wait for a better day. I hate fighting the darned wind!

No seriously. The wind is insane!! I walked to get some lunch (I work in downtown Topeka) and was whipped in the face by leaves and sticks.. OUCH!

A chicken sitting business! If it were profitable I would TOTALLY do that!!

Maybe I should do it on the side. Haha. 10 bucks a day and if you have goats or livestock there will be an additional fee. I have no idea how you would set something like that up.

chickies, duckies etc I sent you a PM.
I think a chick sitting business would be awesome. My daughter does pet sitting and a couple of her clients have a couple of pet hens she cares for as well. She loves chickens.
I wish I had access to someone like that that could care for all my animals. I used to pay to have my dogs, cats, and goats cared for but the kids I hired are grown and gone now. Taking care of my birds is a lot bigger job for sure. It would be nice if there were more chicken people around you could trade chick sitting with.
But with me it is very hard to trust anyone. The guy that is going to help while I am in the hospital has trouble remembering how much to give each group. I am so picky I want to be sure all my birds are cared for right.
I just don't understand why anyone would find it weird to have chickens. They are such awesome rewarding creatures. You can pay $500 for a bird that squawks and bites but a chicken will give you food to eat in return for your care. I truely love just watching them in the yard. They are such clowns.

I agree 100%. I talk about my girls so much I'm sure everyone is tired of it. The thing that's cool though is that my husband was totally against this at first and now he's out there making sure the coop is still in good shape and feeding them scraps. He'll just sit there and watch! HAHA!!!

I've converted him to chicken parenthood. Hilarious.

I know that there is one other family down the street with birds because I've seen them walking around. I'd ask but I don't know them specifically. I thought about prebagging food and snacks in paper bags and making "chicken sitting" as painless and simple as possible. Apparently I have to dumb it down. Honestly, I didn't realize how much I've learned about these girls until I started talking to people about it. I guess I just assumed everyone knows how to do it.

Chickens are so much better than parakeets.. sorry!

I've spent 100s of hours researching and learning about chickens. And then a lot more time learning hands on. Even if I had to get rid of most of my birds for some reason I'd have to have a few chickens around. They are just the best entertainment.

Danz, I agree chickens are great entertainment, I get a big kick out of just watching them running around the yard. I had someone here earlier to pick up something for me & when she was leaving I looked out & in front of the run my Big Red rooster had all his girls lined up & he put on quite a show for the lady. She had just said that he was a beautiful rooster & I swear he could understand her because I watched him throw out his chest, crow, & stomp his feet showing off. It was so funny to see!

My chickies r starting to hatch!!!! I have one done and I can hear more peeping!! I do have a question. Two eggs I can hear peeping r not pipping and they r a couple days late. How do I know when I need to help them? I don't want them to suffocate.
