Consolidated Kansas

I know what you all are saying about the hawks, we have them here too & I hate seeing them gliding around looking at what smorgasbord might be below, as in my chickens. Right before they left for the year we had two Mississippi Kites here too that sat in one of the trees & watched. My chickens were nervous while they were here, fortunately unlike the Redtail hawks they are migratory & left soon after. I have some hiding places here that my chickens like, big bushes that they can duck under if they feel threatened. I also got that pickup topper too that they can duck under now if they need to or go into the covered run, so I feel somewhat better that they can find cover if need be. My big rooster does watch out for his girls too & if he feels like anything is threatening them he goes after it, including my poor little Yorkie. Today she came outside & saw him up on the hill & hightailed it back towards me & safety. He has gone after her twice & now she's afraid of him, I don't blame her.

Today hubby & I had to go out in the cold & put a new tarp on the side of the run to replace the plastic that came down. Fortunately with his help it took a lot less time than if I had done it by myself. This should work out much better since it's heavier & it's the same kind I have on the north side. I was thankful to get it done before the rain hits the next two days. We went & got straw today too for the new pups coming next Sat. so they should have a nice straw bed in their doghouse to cuddle into. We stacked the rest of it in the chicken run up against the north wall, so that should insulate things some too. We put our wood rack in there this year since it's all covered in there to keep some of the wood dry to bring in for the woodstove. We haven't gotten another woodshed put up yet for it since we got new siding put on the house this summer & I tore down the old shed that used to be up by the house. Now I'm trying to get my feet thawed out, my toes go so cold out there!

What do you all think about the "Brinsea Octagon Eco 20" that is supposed to hold 24 eggs? BTW- that is the most eggs I would EVER probably try to hatch! LOL Anyway, it has a fan in it, and you can buy the automatic turner for it later on, or you just rock it on octagon edges for now. It is also on sale right now! $109.99-- and that is right around what I'd want to pay. Okay-- it's more than I really want to pay, but at least it's not horribly expensive. Anyone used this? It has good reviews...

BTW- Canchaser, how did your hatch turn out? Did they all do okay?

I've heard people swear by brinsea for small hatching projects. That's a chunk of change for an incubator without a turner though. Did you happen to look on Ebay for dealers, or check places like Cutler supply? You will wish you had the turner. Turning three or 4 times a day sounds easy until you have to go somewhere or do something. 21 days is a long time to keep up the turning manually. I guess it would all depend on how often you plan to use it. I started with a 41 egg incubator and within a month I was buying more. It is a terribly addicting venture. And selling chicks absolutely is the best way to make your chickens pay for themselves.
My advice is to spend the money and get all the bells and whistles you can for the price. But shop around. There's a huge difference in what people charge for these. For small incubators the cheapest price I found anywhere was TSC, even ordering it on line it was free shipping to the store. I know they have little giant but not sure about brinsea.

The cheapest I saw the Brinsea on eBay was for $122-- but the direct site has it on sale for the $109 and the turner is on sale, too... but I'll hold off. (i think) It says the turner turns every hour.

Danz, I've never heard of Cutlers! Thanks!! I checked them out and they have this: "10200 Little Giant Foam Incubator $84.50" It has a fan, but no automatic turner. I'm not even sure if it has an optional turner, because it doesn't mention it, and it just shows egg racks for organizing or whatever, but doesn't say they turn. GOOD point about the turner! Yeah, I may be ripping my hair out at the end of 21 days if I don't get a turner! LOL (btw, they had the same Brinsea for $122--no turner) I wonder why the direct website is so much cheaper??? Okay, I'll keep looking! (they have other incubators to check out that are more pricey-might have everything on them) Thanks for the tips! Uh oh... I hope it's not as addicting as you say it is! ha!

I just looked on the Brinsea website & the prices on their sale are $10 higher on the incubator & the turner than what I paid a couple months ago. I wonder if they have raised them for the holidays. I have always read good reviews on the Brinsea incubators, especially for beginners.

Really?? What did you pay?? Around $90 for just the incubator??? (I think it said $59.99 for the turner) That would be a heck of a deal if that is the case. Perhaps I will just wait it out and watch their prices until they come down. Thanks for pointing that out!

It was $99.95 for the incubator & $49.95 for the turner, so it wasn't a bad deal. You might just watch eBay for awhile too because they do show up on there when people decide to upgrade.

WOW, that's a lot cheaper than I've been seeing them on eBay- including the used ones! Hmmm... wonder why people want so much for them? I put an incubator on my x-mas list this year.

So, if I don't get it, I'll keep watching the prices and look for used or better deals closer to the holidays or there after. I don't need it right now, so I'm not in a rush, which will give me a lot more time to keep looking.
