Consolidated Kansas

I got my shipment of oils already. I am very pleased how fast that was. When I opened the box it smelled just like vetrx. So now I can mix my own and make sure all of my birds get some.

Ivy I just checked Marshmallow again. No tit development yet. She feels really firm under her rib cage but I can't be sure that is puppies. I guess we'll have to wait and see. She's acting hormonal and eating very well . Too bad I can't do an EPT on her. I'd say give it 10 days and something should show then.
My dogs love this cool weather too. They run and jump and wrestle like little pups. It's so much nicer for them in this weather and so much harder on me!

My hubby is very serious about getting a pup. Our GP's are good livestock dogs and I know it will help train the pup well.

This morning I got very concerned for a minute. I heard our dachshund barking so I checked. When I looked out I saw Buddy and Runt running and guineas flying everywhere.

For a minute I thought they were chasing the guineas! As it turns out, they were just running and playing with each other and the guineas got scared and flighty as the dogs ran by. If the dachshund had gotten out he would have been after those birds in a heartbeat.

I got my OLD red incubator fired up a few minutes ago. I need to go back down the basement to check to see about the temp. I have an electronic thermometer in there, and it was reading quite a bit different than the probe type that sticks through the wall of the thing. I'm not sure which one to believe at this point, and I may have to get another one to sway the vote.

I guess I better get some water in it, too.

We are getting ready to finish the room in the basement where the incubators were, so I had to get DH to help me carry them to their new spot in the other room. They aren't all that heavy, but they were too big for me to get my arms around to get a good enough grip to carry them.

I picked up a little fan at the computer store when we took my laptop in for repair. I thought they were going to give it to me for free. They fished it out of a box of old discarded parts, but they charged me $5 for it!

Oh, well. If it works it will be worth it.

Wow, chickens just don't get it about holding still for photos, do they?!?!It was challenging, but here's what I got:
This is the only baby picture I could find that showed the head.
Is that a large spot or small? I don't have a point of reference.
Now my cute little bantam is trying to crow, dang it!

It sounds like he has the hiccups.

As for my teaching job- fun mostly, but they do keep me on my toes! My definition of gifted kids, after years of first-hand experience is this:
Kids that can think of more ways to get in more trouble more quickly than other kids, then want to negotiate.
As with most jobs, it's the paperwork that kills the fun.

We have more pot pie! A frizzle bantam this time.
Why that would just whet your appetite without beddin' her down again! (any "O Brother Where Art Thou" fans out there?)

OH MY GOSH! "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" is one of my favorite movies. I still laugh so hard at some of the lines in that movie. I'm not much of a movie watcher, but I love that one.

BTW, I have two gifted sons. (Mom bragging here a little!) I certainly appreciate the teachers on both ends of the continuum. My daughter was very gifted as well, but developed a brain tumor which required extensive treatment and ended up having to have special education until she died at the age of 17 from another tumor.

The boys are quite different, too. My oldest is finishing up at KSU this year. He is getting his degree in mechanical engineering with the nuclear option. He also has all his requirements for med school. He wants to be a radiation oncologist. At first he wanted to solve all the worlds energy problems, but I think he decided those problems were mostly political so he decided on med school. He took his MCAT test recently and was in the 97% range.

My youngest is also at KSU. He just started this year and is also majoring in mechanical engineering. He doesn't know which way he wants to go with it, though. He loves designing and building things, and with his "right brain" thinking being off the charts high, I can see him going into some kind of design field. He has to work a lot harder at things than his older brother due to the fact that he has ADD. We got him treated early, and I'm amazed at his abilities. His left brain type thinking is more along the average line. I guess that kind of imbalance is pretty common with ADD. It runs in my family. The ones who get treated go on and do extremely well and the ones who don't struggle with things for the rest of their lives. I find it very interesting.

Pardon my longwindedness.

Frizzle, those two look like hens from their coloring. In one picture they look a little long legged to be hens and that looked like a large white spot on the chick's head. But going from the coloring and their build otherwise I'd say they were hens. Pictures really stink cause it is hard to see their actual size.

Love it, Ivy!!

"Gopher, Everett?" Yep, we still use lines from that movie, too, or sometimes take-offs. Not everyone 'got it' when the DH told people he'd been L-A-I-D-O-F-T. I wish your boys the best of luck! Sometimes it's very difficult for kids with so many interest and abilities to decide which way to go. I'm so sorry about your daughter. That's just heartbreaking.

All three of my kids were identified as gifted early on, and each is so different from the others!! My eldest got involved in drugs and alcohol very early, and is currently in the hospital with problems resulting from alcohol abuse. He got through high school, but dropped out of college, and can't keep steady employment. It's a sad waste of a good mind, but I keep praying for a miracle.

My daughter is an architectural engineer (KU), currently doing electrical engineering design, working too many hours, and telling me that she and her new husband don't plan on having kids. We'll see. She's only 24. They certainly treat their dog and cat like children!!

My youngest is still at home, and may, in the next year or so, Lord willing, graduate from WSU. He'll be 22 in January, but he started college at 16! He has WAY more hours than necessary, just not in all the particular courses for any given degree. He is majoring in mathematics, has a good bit of chemistry, and has taken a whole lot of music (vocal, theory, etc.). He is actually giving me voice lessons, and is darn good at it! We perform together in a Celtic band (Knocknasheega- yes, there's a website, but it's kinda lame), which is fun, mostly. I've certainly grown close to him, and really enjoy his company. He, too, is struggling with what sort of career to pursue. He's enjoying the chicken adventure almost as much as I am! He works at the Spice Merchant, and is a phenomenal chef/food scientist, so he is very excited about the exceptional eggs the girls are producing.

AAKKK Too long-winded myself!

Ivy, I'm so very sorry about your daughter. Almost had me in tears there. I can't even imagine. It sounds like you have a very gifted family!

MsFrizzle-- I really think your barred rocks are little girls!! They look just like my girls! I have two barred rocks, but yours look a bit older than mine. Mine are 9 weeks old and have the same "look" to them. Mine are very bossy, but definitely girls. Mine have the really small, pale combs and nice big round bodies like yours. Sounds like you have amazing kids, too! I'm sorry about your oldest son, but I really, really believe in prayer and miracles. So I think you're doing the right thing.

Have you read any of Debbie Macomber's books? I'm reading one about'Shirley, Mercy and Goodness ("Angles at Christmas") getting involved again in answering prayers. She's a great author, and very prolific in her writing.

Oh Brother where art thou-- watched it over and over, etc... hehe!!! So funny! I even bought the sound track and there for a while had it playing constantly in my car. I still listen to it from time to time.

Well, my DH surprised me last night and took me out. He said we were going to my parents house really quick after dinner. I was like... whaaa?? And he said, dont worry, just jump in the car. So I did, and we drove over and he told me to stay put- I still had no clue! And all the kids jumped out and they trooped into my parents house and then DH came back and took me out. So sweet of him! Tonight we're going out for my Dad's birthday and my MIL is going to watch the kids for a couple of hours so we can eat in peace, and then we'll all head back to my parents for cake.

Okay-- I don't know what to do. I've been opening the coop door every day for the last several days. NO ONE has gone outside?! Well, except for the most fiesty silkie- she heads out for a bit, and then goes back in. The rest of them look out at her like --'omg, omg, omg, omg!!' I hope they go out soon. I went out yesterday to stir up their chips and then rake it all even again and some of them ALMOST jumped out, but they'd rather go screaming in the coop watching the big scary rake at work than head outside into the sun. Sigh.

I so hope you are all right about the barred rocks!! They are really sweet, and will come up and roost on my legs when I'm sitting under the coop working on stuff. My next-door neighbor says I should keep the roos until someone complains- he loves them, but I'm afraid I'd be in big trouble since I got the "animal maintenance permit" for up to 12 chickens, and it specifically prohibits roosters.
My silly youngsters can't seem to understand the ramp up to the coop- either to go up or down!! They've been finding low roosts in the run underneath, and since it's well-fenced, I've quit fighting it for the time being. I need to re-design the whole south end where the ramp is, in my spare time (ha!).

Ok, here are the BR kids with the rooster boys and Helga. The BRs are trying to get away from the others because they're, well, chicken.
I'd forgotten to mention how different the tails are on the 2 roos. The long-tail guy is dark gray with black lacing, and the short tail guy is black with green shimmers in the sunlight. They may be entirely different kinds of chickens, for all I know.
