Consolidated Kansas

Why don't you tempt your chickens with a treat late in the evening just before it gets dark. Bird seed or peanuts or whatever you can give them that they go nuts over. Call them and put the treat in the house about the same time they need to go to bed. I call my chickens when I want them to gather up. I yell "Cheeekens" and they come running for a treat. This only applies to my older breeding stock. The offspring haven't been trained yet.

I believe her first due date is the 15th. So it is closer to 2 weeks. DH moved the big dog house today and is working on getting the kennel set up. I need to get it cleaned out cause the chickens have been hanging out in there. I'll put up a board to keep the puppies from crawling out. She keeps taking naps in the old garage where all the young pullets stay. I also have to block off under the front porch so she won't go there to have pups. She started having her first litter there then moved to the old garage. I had to move her and the pups to the big dog house. I hope she just goes there once I have it all set up for her.
I also need to go visit the vet this week and make sure I have all my ducks in a row for her.

So exciting Danz!! Baby GP's!! Can't wait for photos!! If you think it's getting really close, will you lock her up in the kennel so she won't try to get under the porch? Or maybe just start feeding her in there before hand??

I'll just move her after she starts having pups. All I have to do is move the puppies and she'll follow. If I know for sure that she is going to have them I will probably shut her in the kennel. But last time she started very early morning; so who knows.

Hawkeye, I call mine every evening by calling "chick, chick, chick, chick" & I take them sunflower seeds every day at the same time & they all come running like little kids. Once they know they're going to get a treat each day they will get the idea & then you won't have to worry about digging them out from under the coop, they will all be in there. Yeah, that's way too big of an area to put up chicken wire to keep the chickens out of, it's all along our fence line in this one area. I don't think they were down there today, but then I was busy & wasn't watching as much either. I did see them quite a bit in my herb garden & front yard today while I was here though.

That swap sounds interesting, but I wish they were going to have it before it gets so hot, by the middle of June it will be steaming. It's a ways down there too, even for me & I'm almost to the OK border. It wouldn't be so bad if some were going together, that would be fun.

tazcat70, yes it was nice meeting you also, you'll find me on here most days. You're lucky you have neighbors you can bribe with eggs. Hey the person coming for the Welsummers didn't happen to live in Walton did they? I was just curious, I have a friend that lives up there that has been looking for some.

Danz, that's so exciting about the puppies, we all can't wait to see pics of them after they're born!

Well I found out today that the rabbits I was planning to get aren't what they were promised to be. It sounds like the poor girl that bought them got taken. I'm still going to go look at them tomorrow & may still get some for pets, but I'm disappointed too because I was planning on raising some. Now to find out they're mixed & she doesn't even know what breed they are is the pits. Now I will have to decide what I want to do. On top of that I found out the rabbit hutches I was hoping to get aren't available any more, so I will have to use the cage I have for now.

tazcat70, Oh OK, just thought I would check. There is someone in Augusta who is always selling chickens on Craigslist, but I don't know who they are.

Danz, I forgot to put in my guess on the pups, I think she will have 8 again. Isn't that how many she had before? Yes, we want to see pics of her now & then of the pups after they're born.

Hi all! I didn't fall off the face of the earth, but I've been spending 10-12 hours a day at the hospital with my mom, helping, and keeping my dad on an even keel. I barely got the posts read when I got home, and just haven't had the energy to respond. Mom's surgery went really well, but an 84-year-old skinny lady takes longer to heal from a spinal fusion than younger folks would. It was actually 2 surgeries, one from the front to make space, and the second from the back to do the rest and put in the hardware. Poor thing! Anyhow, she got out of ICU yesterday and I thought it was a premature move, but to my amazement, she walked down the hall today with the physical therapist, and stood up from a sitting position all by herself. I had to go back to work today (teacher inservice

), but I spent the evening with her, or I wouldn't have believed it.
Welcome, new friends!
Danz, I'm so glad you found out what was causing the trouble. Heal quickly!! I sure wish I had a big enough yard for a Marshmallow pup.
Hawkeye, I'm on pins and needles with you!! By the way, I have trained my birds to come for treats when I ring the rooster bell I put on my coop after I saw how cute yours is. My next door neighbor gets a kick out of seeing my chickens charging toward me when they hear the bell. It didn't take long for them to make the connection, even if they are birdbrains
