Chook.. I'm so sorry to hear about the lost chicks! OMG, I'd be freaking out! I hope they get their act together and get them to you safely and healthy.

Chicken names- okay, here goes.

Fuzzy-the hens pecked all his feathers out and they came in all fuzzy looking for a while.
Goliath-cause he's HUGE.
Rumpy-(R.I.P.) He didn't have a rump.
Piper- Got left in the brooder with the guineas and they all follow him around like he's the "Pied Piper."
Imelda-She's got more feathers on her feet than Imelda Marcos has shoes.
Donkey- She's got a really big badonkadonk.

That's all I can think of right now.

Rittert-Congratulations on becoming a new chicken owner again. Good luck with your OEGB's. I have a couple varieties that come from show birds and they are so beautiful. They all have really nice personalities, too. They are super sweet birds. Silver duckwing and black breasted reds.

Where are you ordering your chicks from? I live in Topeka, got a barr rock, rhode island red and buff orph from TSC last spring. My buff just died today, so I'm thinking about adding a couple more this spring. Not going back to TSC, they've been really rude. I have a friend who bought hers at Orschleins last spring and ended up with quite a few roosters, so kind of scared to buy from them as well. My husband works in Lawrence, and would like to move there someday.

LJack, I know several of us in this area will have chicks in the future season. I'm hatching like mad right now, but I'm keeping most of them for at least a month to see how they shake out since I am improving all of my breeds. I'll have Orps, Rocks, Cochins, Silkies, Ameraucanas and Chanteclers at least.

Sorry about your lost hen- I know that's hard.

And thank you everyone for the kind thoughts on my missing hens- the PO is really digging a very deep hole, and I'm just ready to scream. I'm documenting each call, each name, etc. I am very vocal when it comes to consumer protection, and they will not be happy if those birds don't show up before dawn, alive. I'll raise all sorts of Cain...

Danz, I'm really hoping it's going better. I'd force her to come in with the puppies, even if you and hubby have to drag her on a blanket all the way up the stairs!!

Trish, I'm sorry your neighbor didn't keep those birds alive...hold off letting them have more until you examine their set-up.

Rittert, congratulations on your new birds.

LJack, of the 5 chickens we got from Orschlein, 2 were roos. I know it's not an exact science, but that's quite a bit more than the 10% they estimate.

I ordered mine from chickensforbackyards.com. The only reason I wound up going with them is because they had a low minimum order and I wanted to make sure that I did get pullets and not roos. I read a few reviews and didn't find anything horrible about them at all, but it does seem that they are not actually a hatchery, just a distributor. I hope it all turns out ok.

Once my chickens are closer to a year old, then I plan on getting a few fertalized eggs for them to hatch. Can't have roos here in town, and I know I'm taking a huge risk by hatching a few of my own, but I really want to experience that. I'm sure I'll get one of the hens that will turn broody on me and i'll feel bad for her and let her have her chicks. LOL. I don't even have them yet and I already know that I'm going to spoil them rotten!

Cherwill - I thought they sounded familiar, but couldn't place the names! I haven't watched that show in a while, but loved it when it was on!

I got 4 ee's and a buff orp from Orshleins in Topeka last spring and they were all girls and all very healthy. They were out of the pullet bin, though. What I like about Orsheins is that they keep them shut in unless you are actively buying chicks so they aren't handled by every kid in the store.

LJack, don't buy out of the "straight run" bin of chicks if you want pullets. Only buy out of the "pullet" bin for females. Yeah, you'll pay a bit more, but it's worth it. Also, unless you are going to be buying a lot of birds, or want something in particular, I'd stick with buying your chicks locally. We have several options here-- we have TSC, Atwoods, and Orschelns-- there might be one or two more places (we have chicks at the CoOp, etc...). So living in Lawrence with KC, Topeka, etc all around you, I'm sure you can find many more places that sell chicks. Just be sure not to buy straight run. I bought my chicks from a hatchery-- Meyers Hatchery. They have a very good accidental roo ratio and good ratings. They are not a 'go between' and you will pay less with Meyer's than with MyPetChicken or any of the other go betweens. Meyer's Hatchery has a 3 chick minimum. However, the shipping is what will kill you. It's just not worth buying only 3! Shipping is about $60. That is going to be the going rate for ANY live animal. I paid $55 to have some young adult birds shipped a few months back and because they were single boxes (not the large box) they were cheaper than sending a chick box-- which is a bit bigger, hence the bigger shipping fee. Anyway, unless you are willing to pay that kind of money -- and yes, sometimes it's worth it (I did), then look locally.

Tweety, great names! All of my chicks were named after I saw them and fit their personality. When Zorro, Yoda and Zelda showed up--- for some reason Zorro looked really suave and smooth and that spurred on the other accompanying names for his girls. Yoda and Zelda are little ninjas! Seriously! They are great hold, but at first, they were like all feet and ninja kicks. ha! Do you already have an incubator??

Rittert, YAY on being able to change your siggy! So exciting that you have OEGB's! Btw... I think you switched the letters around in OE. I think those things are soooo adorable! I hope you can cough up some pictures for us!

Ivy- FUNNY names! I love Donkey and Piper. Totally fits what happened to them. ha!

Renee-- I hope those pullets show up quick! And if not, I hope someone in the PO system has enough brains to open the darned box and give them water and some fruit or food or something! I am with you-- I would be livid. This is totally unacceptable. You would think that LIVE ANIMALS (hello!?!?!) would be treated better and handled quicker, and with more care. This is just beyond what I would have ever expected.
