Darn site triple posted on me. It kept saying an error occurred and it couldn't post.

I just figured you were on some pretty good cold meds!

Welcome back Ivy. I started in with the kids pretty young and think I should have been more career minded. It sounds like your kids plan on doing it the right way, income THEN kids.

I plugged my Brinsea incubator in yesterday evening. It reached temperature pretty fast-- within an hour or less. And then I didn't touch it since and this morning it's the same temperature. I'm running it dry. It's at 101-- so it's pretty high. The instructions say to fill only one chamber with water -- and then in the last two days (lockdown) to fill both chambers with water. I'm not going to mess with the temperature dial yet until I fill the chamber with water and see what temperature I get then.

Danz-- I look at Walmart for the cheap digital Hydro-therms to put on the inside like you said. But I couldn't find one small enough that I thought would fit well enough. The ones they had were really pretty big! So I looked on Amazon and spent a couple of days reading reviews. I finally bought one that people use in their humidors and can be salt-tested for 75% humidity. The reviews all said that it worked great and was pretty accurate. So I ordered it and I hope it arrives by Monday. Worst case... by Tuesday. I think I'll be loading up my eggs tonight or tomorrow. I should have bought that much sooner. Hope you're feeling better. I'm still not all that great... but not too bad. Much better than yesterday, I think.

Ivy-- YAY!! So glad that your DH is feeling better and doing well. Thank goodness that he had this done in time and that you stayed proactive about it! Yeah, the hunting for wood/materials took forever. Sheesh-- it's because it's all piled up and digging thru it means really moving things around. And then only to discover that it's snapped in half or something and then trying to find another one! ha! It's so much easier to work with NEW materials... however, I did find that this was really fun and I felt so creative trying to make things fit and work! I can see the draw to trying to recycle.

Morning folks!

Woke up to a couple new baby black copper marans chicks this morning. One was dry enough to take out, but the other one was still kind of wet, so he will stay in there until I get ready to go to work. I moved some more of my bigger chicks out to the stock tank in the barn. They all seem to be doing well in there. I haven't turned a tap on the new brooder for a couple days. DH's health was a much bigger priority.

Hawkeye-Yes, I get a lot of satisfaction out of salvaging and making something new.... just like on this brooder I'm building. It's all salvaged material. I bought new hinges, but they were too small and didn't work. I'll have to get some pictures of it soon. The hinges I used are HUGE and RUSTY but it makes it look rather cool and unique, plus it used old hinges that otherwise would have gone to the scrap iron pile. Well, Hawkeye, at least you only had ONE pile of salvaged lumber to wade through. If I'm looking for something I look where I think it is. No, not there. Maybe in the shop. Huh. No luck. Maybe the new barn. Nope. Did I stash it in the old wooden barn? No luck... but HEY! I forgot we had this stuff here! Maybe I can use it for something. Gee... did I take that other thing down the basement? Maybe Mike knows what I did with it. Oh, well. I'll just start another project.

On your incubator, I ALWAYS get a different reading if my humidity drops in my incubators. There have been times when the water pan has dried up and the humidity has dropped into the 20's. When it does that, my temp reading jumps up a degree or two. I fill the water pan, let the humidity come back up and my temp reading goes back to 99.5. I don't know why that is, but it is pretty consistent with my incubators, so I wouldn't touch your temp adjustment until you have your humidity where you want it.

Danz-I'll bet your ducks are loving this weather. It is really drizzly and wet here. I have no idea how much rain we got. I was in Topeka with DH when most of it came down, but it must have been a lot. I can't wait to see the pups up running around. There just isn't anything cuter than a puppy! Poor old Buddy. He sure limps a lot, but he can get up and move pretty good when he senses a predator. He can't keep up with Runt anymore, though. I am amazed at how Runt has taken over and is actually protective of Buddy as well as being the leader when going after the predators. I still think Buddy is usually the first to sense a predator. He pays attention more. Runt is still a pup at heart and wants to play, but as soon as Buddy gives the warning bark Runt is off like lightening. They never cease to amaze me.

I am in the process of starting a new project. I've had to do some long, hard self-talk in order to convince myself to do this, but I think it will work out fine. I am going to raise some mealworms.

I've been reading on here and it looks like it is very simple and not very time consuming. It's also the best protien snack you can give your birds. Besides supplementing the chickens, I want to use them to "cage train" some of my show birds. I'm pretty sure I can get them really excited about a meal worm!

Ivy, that's hilarious! I get distracted like that too! :) I definitely want to see pictures of the coop and the brooder you are working on! We're still "flooded" here-- so no work on the coop today. Sigh. I probably should drag it to the barn so it will dry out and I can get back to work on it. There's plenty of work space in there. Okay-- I just filled up one of the water reservoirs and we'll see what the temperature looks like in another hour or two. I'm not going to mess with the temp until I see what it looks like with the water in it. I'll change it later this afternoon or evening to be sure. Hopefully like you said, the temp will drop a bit. If so, I might be right on target. I bought the unit that doesn't have the fancy digital read out on top-- so I have no idea what the humidity is. I'll just have to rely on the mercury therm glued to the top in there to see what the temp is. I can't wait to get my new digital one that i ordered. It's supposed to be for humidors-- and it was a bit more pricey than I was going to pay, but after reading the reviews, I had a hard time buying a cheaper one that was less reliable. Sigh. My DH is going to kill me! LOL!!!!! *shrug*

Well I'm still sick today but maybe not quite as bad. I'm not sneezing quite as much. DH finally went out and fed the birds for me last night. I got my jacket on and headed down the hall to get my boots on and he came in and said he was working on it. I guess he decided I wasn't going to make it out there. He is feeling better and went to work today so I'm hoping this is just the 3 day thing. But he is one of those guys that would rather go to work sick so he could come home and gripe about it when the day was over.

I feel so guilty not getting out there and taking care of my birds. I notice problems when he doesn't. I might play the weakling and let one of my neighbors feed them today in exchange for eggs. He offered. It depends on how crappy I feel as the day wears on. I'd rather do my own work than have to deal with company. Sometimes I know I am just a weird person that way.... so go ahead and think it!

David, I think it is awesome that you crochet! I tried crocheting once and ended up with a very lopsided project. My mother has made afghans and baby blankets for years. She can't do it any long and it breaks my heart I never let her teach me all she knows. I started needle pointing when I had my first lower back surgery and really enjoy it. I haven't had time to even pick it up this winter. It is something I only do in the winter time. She always crocheted when she was watching TV in the evening. I can't do that with needlepoint because you have to have really good light to see.
I haven't been on the swap site for days. I guess I could post some stuff if I'd ever figure out what I am doing here.
Ivy, glad you are home and all is well.
