Marty,

I will send you a PM with the hat info.

I have a small flock of 3 Reds, 1 Barred Rock mix, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte mix and 1 Amerucana.

I am currently treating the Wyandotte for gape worm and maybe some other parasites. Besides the gaping she has had some really runny stools. So she is isolated and in the garage. Hopefully, she will improve.

Hi all!!! Welcome to all the new members! Glad you've joined us!!! Between my teaching job, helping Dad with Mom's surgery recovery, band practice, and an occasional gig, I have only been able to read through all the posts every few days. I do pray for the health issues and serious concerns, I just don't often have time to write (I should be sleeping right now

). Currently I'm teaching a poetry unit, and for some reason almost all my examples/demonstrations have involved chickens. Today's lesson was on sonnets, and I figured if I expected the kids to do one, I ought to write one as well. It's my very first sonnet ever. I thought maybe some of you might relate:

Chicken Math Sonnet
I only meant to buy some chicken feed,
A farm supply store was my favored source,
I'd quickly buy the kind my chickens need,
Then head back home to do the chores, of course.

I didn't know I'd face such perils there;
Oh! Bins of fluffy chicks in every hue,
A joyful peeping chorus filled the air!
I had to have some! What else could I do?

The Chick Days come in spring, but also fall,
And unsuspecting customers are caught.
That chicken math infects us, one and all.
What will we do with all those chicks we bought?

Another brooder and a bigger coop?
It's time to join the chicken addict group.

msjfrizzle, I love that! Boy does that described us all or what?! I hadn't even planned to get more chicks this year other than some breeders that I want, but someone offered to share an order & here I am joining the ranks with chicken math yet again. Oh well, I guess I'll have more eggs to sell by fall or maybe about the time my current batch go into molt my new ones will be laying, yeah that's my excuse.

Have any of you had the Anconas before? I was just kind of curious about them, so I ordered a couple with the others to try them out. I thought they would add some more color to my flock too.

msjfrizzle - I like that also. Although that is not the source for my chicken math, I understand it is a real concern for some people. LOL Hating to go shopping and learning to get what I need from the local farm store without even going inside the store does help. I have actually never been in one of the national chain farm stores, so have never even seen a bin of chicks looking so tempting. If I had, I would probably have way more chickens than I do. My problem is these crazy broody hens that manage to hide nests and surprise me with their efforts. Plus the tempting "for sale" chickens I manage to find.

Ivermectin administered to the sick hen this evening. About how long before I start seeing an improvement? I have her isolated from the other hens and they are all doing well. I will administer another dose in 10 days time per instructions I have seen from others on the forum.

The reason I haven't been posting a lot is because I have been busy. My life is always at ludicrous speed!

Are you treating your hen for worms or a respiratory problem? Ivermectin is a wormer or a treatment for parasites. To my knowlege it will not have any effect on a respiratory ailment.

If you are treating her for respiratory then I would recommend using an antibiotic and some VetRx.

Daren-I would LOVE to tap some trees and make some syrup, but I'm afraid with my agenda this spring it isn't going to happen.

Didn't you make some walnut syrup last year. It sounds so interesting. We have TONS of walnut trees here.
