Merry Christmas everyone!! It is snowing here and has been since yesterday evening. We've gotten at least 3 more inches of snow, though it is dry powdery snow so there's not much moisture with it. It is nice to have a white Christmas, though.
Danz - thank you for your quick response about my goose (gander?). I have a terrible time telling the two embdens apart so I'm not sure which it was that got hurt. It took me over an hour to get the bleeding stopped, but I did end up being successful. It looks to me like the bird somehow managed to puncture his/her foot in the duck house. I really don't know HOW that happened, though because all of the sharp edges are covered. I thought that maybe the bird got his/her foot caught in the door, but I am not so sure after having searched the duck house for possible problems. Either way, the hurt bird and a friend are camping out in the house for a day or two so I can better watch the injured foot. The wound is 1/8"-1/4" wide and is present on the top and bottom of the foot, though the top of the foot seems to be injured worse. I used flour instead of corn starch to stop the bleeding (its cheaper) and sat outside with the bird for 45 minutes in sub-zero wind chills trying to get the bleeding stopped. My DH was sleeping inside, and I didn't want to wake him up. Finally, I had to come inside as my feet were getting pretty cold, and the bird had wiggled and caused me to knock my hat off, and I couldn't get it back on one-handed. Either way, things are looking up for the injured bird. One question, though... Why is it that animals ALWAYS seem to injured themselves when help (i.e. the vet) is unavailable/closed?
