Consolidated Kansas

We got another egg this afternoon but she is not laying in the box but next to it. Anyone have any suggestion on what I can do to get her to lay in the box?
Put golf balls IN the nest. They want to lay where everyone else's "eggs" are layed.

oh BTW- my little cockerel with the paralysed leg is using his leg now as sort of a crutch. He lifts his body up and can get it under him and sort of use it to walk on, even though it still doesn't have any feeling. But at least he is no longer dragging it around!!!!

That is what Scout did. Good sign.

Her injury was at the end of October, and she is almost fully healed. She still has a little bit of a limp, but she can get on the roost (3+ ft. above the shavings) with no problems and her balance is completely restored. She is working her way back up the pecking order (she was top hen before the injury), and has restored her relationship with her best friend (a Welsumer twice her size - she is a Campine) and they are sleeping together on the roost again. IF you know she was injured, you can see a bit of a limp, but no one who doesn't know about it notices. It might be different for a roo (breeding might be impacted).

did Scout ever get full mobility back?? Just wondering if this bird will forever be lame. I'm guessing yes, but hoping he might pull out of it. I just don't know what kind of injury he has.

Hello everyone! I hope all had a Merry Christmas! Santa treated everyone in my family well!

I am so behind, but the glance I did get is that it sounds like this weather has been brutal on lots of folks flocks. I am sorry to hear about everyone's loses. We take a lot of time and it is frustrating when mother nature has other plans. I know this cold weather has put a stop to my integrating the Buff Braham Bantam adoptee I picked up a month ago.

My latest trial is my Amerucana, I just noticed she has a bubbly eye on the left side. No other symptoms -- no coughing or sneezing. The eye is swollen and there is dirt near/around it. I do know that she was caught outside the other night when an owl paid my yard a visit. I don't know where this bird was hiding, but I am wondering if she didn't do something to herself when this event happened. I am sure she was freaked out of her mind and tried to get under something. My guess is that is when the eye injury occurred. What can I do for her? I don't think this is respiratory, but what do I know. Any ways input is always welcome.

Karen - Good lookin bird there! Seems like you are really getting the hang of this chicken thing!

Back to cleaning up the firestorm know as Christmas as the DW is down for the count with some bug. I am playing Daddy guard to keep the kiddos away from her so she can rest.

Have a good evening everyone!

Duh! A picture of the Amerucana would be good:

You can see the swelling in the cavity under her eye. It will start like that sometimes on respiratory infections. It may be a sinus infection right now but quickly spreads to respiratory. Mine battled it a few months ago. A 6 day treatment with duramycin did the trick. I gave warm chamomile/lavender/echinacea tea to help with the symptoms. Just plain warm water will do wonders for symptoms though. Good luck

Hey Rob, if you don't have any of the stuff on hand this evening that's been recommended, flush the eye with Vet Rx until you can get an antibiotic or Veteracyn or both. That's what I would do and Vet Rx is fine in the eye. It's really good for flushing a blocked tearduct so it should work okay. I got that tip from JosieChick.

Karen-- WOW that boy has amazing color!!! Do you just cull all the ones that are lacking the white spots? If it's anything like what I'm doing-- any undesirable color gets "cut" and never bred. He is gorgeous, though! Sounds like you all have been having so much fun out there in the craft room! So neat!! Very neat that your brother is a great musician. I hope your furnace gets worked out. That does not sound fun at all. We're getting closer and closer to our lay-off date!! EEKS! Making me nervous and my DH is now in full swing of trying to find another job. Cross your fingers! How is your DH doing? I hope he is okay out there. My DH has strep throat right now, and he's running a fever and not feeling well.

Okay, so I'm practicing an effort in futility tonight, I'm sure. I put all of Zelda's (my hen that died) eggs that I've collected in the last couple of weeks into the incubator. I'm like 99.9% sure that NONE of them are fertile. She has been in the girl pen with no boys for a while. But my new black boy did jump the fence a few times and he was in there for the last week. But I didn't collect any eggs from her this last week.... which also makes me go hmmm.... wonder if she was egg-bound or had periontitis.. Anyway, I have had my incubator put up for months now, but got it out, got it leveled out on temp and put in the eggs. The eggs have been sitting on my counter, so they were never in the fridge. I'm sure it'll be a BIG waste and that I'll be tossing out all those eggs, but figured I'd give it a shot in her honor to see if there was some chance I could get one last chick from her.

Poor thing. I'm going to candle in 3 days and see if there is anything. I'll let you all know, but I'm sure I'll be trashing them. I'll give them until Day 5-6 before I toss just in case. Sigh.

Thanks Hawkeye -- I'm really proud of this guys color. I'm getting better at culling but yes, at this point I'm only keeping the ones with the brightest coloring and/or size. I'm thinking next round I'll have enough with good size that I can cull for coloring and size. I don't have any grown birds that are "it" but I'm very close with only one. Ultimately, I'm trying to create a bird that is very hardy and dual-purpose but wildly colored with spots, straight single combs and yellow legs/feet. The Aloha needs to be practical and fun to look at!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you with those eggs. Sure hope it works out.

Good to know! I hope mine is able to use his leg like that again. He is not a breeder, though, just a pet. So breeding won't matter. But I'd like to see him not have to struggle with his leg either way.

If my choices were the Brinsea or the 1588--- I'd go with the Brinsea. I've heard too many humidity problems with the 1588. The Brinsea has no issues. Except that Sunflower bought one and their lids kept being warped when they shipped them to her. I don't know what their problem was....BUT the upside is that they have excellent customer service and replaced the entire unit immediately. I love my Brinsea and when I lift the lid, it goes back to temps VERY quickly when I put the lid back on! It's an awesome machine.

Well, that is amazing about how quickly you were able to obtain all that coloring and you didn't even start with Swedish!!! The Aloha project is just beautiful, and I hope you can get those yellow legs. That is a common fault on a lot of LF-- their legs are grey which is No Bueno. (like with Rocks and other layers)

Thank you for the crossed fingers on my eggs. I'm pretty sure they'll be tossed out, I just can't imagine any of them being fertile, plus-- I was going to eat them, so I never turned them each day or kept them in the dark. I did everything wrong because these were not marked to eat. Such a shame, since I'm sure I'll have no new chicks from her. I do have a bunch of grow outs from her that are nice, but what a downer to lose her. :(
