Chickies- I am sighned up for their news letter. That is were I bought my last batch of pullets. I will keep looking. I really want seremas or bantam cochins and I have the money I just need to find the birds.
I have bantam cochin eggs coming from West Knoll Farm tomorrow. That is Amy Phillips and she is awesome. Google http://www.westknollfarm.com/ She has pictures of all her birds. Also Wingshadows hacienda on facebook has some incredible looking birds too. Her name is Lynne. I will be trying to get some of hers later this spring also. OR if you wanted to set up an egg split deal PM me.

Sounds great. I will check those out and let you know

I didn't want to multi since I was so far behind so I'm going to try to remember what everyone wrote. Mustang I remember my Mom canning hamburgers for a trip with the church group. I remember them being awesome. I am sure you could do it with about anything. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have some on hand just in case but I have an electric stove so if the power goes off I am in a bind anyway.
My old hen is still alive. It is weird. She has black sooty looking stuff coming out of her mouth in a little drool every once in a while. Her crop feels empty. I can't get her to eat or drink. DH said he had a dog that had cancer and the same stuff came from her mouth. Anyway she is still sitting in the towel on the heat vent. I guess I'll just leave her there until it is over. She reacts when I touch her but otherwise isn't moving. She is holding her head up most of the time. Poor thing. I've never seen anything quite like that. Any ideas, Josie?
Yeah Josie, Frizzled pink picked up the roo yesterday and he is now at Trish's. Nothing like a chicken transport! I think you are right. If someone just drove the roads delivering birds they'd be busy all the time.
Also those silly Seramas were about the broodiest darned chickens I ever had. Some of them would just growl if I you would get near their eggs. One thing about them ... they are prolific little birds.
That one little white hen I had with the numbered band on her leg was bound and determined to be broody. She was also a big mamma's girl and would go into breeding position every time she saw me. I had her in the brooder with a few chicks once so she could raise them without them getting picked on. She loved sitting on my arm when I was feeding and watering. She was definitely my favorite Serama.
I just packed up and headed to town today. I decided if I waited until I was ready to combine trips I'd never make it in. So I grabbed some pie I had left and went to see my Dad. I hadn't been in to see him for a couple weeks and I know he was feeling left out. I just didn't seem to find the time. I spent a couple hours there and my oldest sister stopped by on her lunch hour. I hadn't seen her in several weeks. She had my Christmas gift with her. She had a custom made necklace with two disks on it. One of them said Sisters. The other one had our names on it, and there were three birthstones hanging on top of that for each of us. I thought it was awesome. Hand made apparently by someone but very unique. Now I am thinking my bag of candy and the candle I have for her is a terrible gift! Last year I spent a lot more than usual on my siblings. We usually just give token gifts. So this year I cut back and gave more token gifts and got nicer things from them. I feel like a heel. I always want to give more substantial gifts than anyone else so I am sure they don't feel shorted.
I guess it is a good thing I'm not rich. I'd just spend it all on everyone else.
I had fun with my stupid water again this afternoon after I got back home. I couldn't find a good shut off for the end of my hose so I used one of those spray ends. Of course it would have to be turned and turned to get the stream right and then turned the other direction to shut off the water. I had a pair of ski pants on over my jeans and they were frozen solid by the time I got back in the house. I guess that was better than my jeans being frozen.
I feel like a total bear in this weather. It makes me hurt and it makes me grouchy.

Wow Josie, it sounds like you have been really busy and have so many projects going on!

Okay, I went out and took pics of all 6 Silchins - let me know what you think. I have no experience with Cochins so to me they all look very Cochin-ey, but to your more experienced eye, you may see things I don't.

I'll do Millie first - she is just the sweetest little thing. I have her segregated during the day so she can drink the medicated water but let her out in the late afternoon so she can go to bed with the flock. I let her out a little early tonight so I could get some pics of her for you. She was so pleased to be out she wouldn't hold still and all the other pics I took of her were blurry so I'm giving you the only two that weren't even though they're not great pics:

Next is an almost-white-splash hen who is also very sweet. I've always thought she just has a very kind face. I can just imagine her with chicks:

The last hen is "Big Blue", so named because when I first got them from you she was so much bigger than the others that I thought she must be a lot older. When I questioned you, you said no, they were all about the same age and at some point she slowed down and is now one of the smallest of the six. Nevertheless, I continue to call her "Big Blue". The sunlight doesn't show it and makes her look lighter than she really is, but she is a really good blue color in my opinion as it is very uniform throughout her body.

Then there are the 3 cockerels. First is "Little Blue" (who is now much larger than Big Blue):

Then there is an almost white splash cockerel:

And last, a much bluer cockerel. Well, now that I've uploaded it, the contrast between them isn't so great. I had to go into the coop to find him so with the flash, the light is different, making him look more white than he is in person:
HEChicken, I love that first one's coloring, it's the same as my new little Swedish Flower Hen pullet. She's just beautiful, you should try to get some chicks from her & see if she has any hatch like her. Cochins are cute, but not that great for laying if you want lots of eggs. I had a few when I lived in Derby just because I liked the way they looked. Back then I knew nothing about chicken breeds & just bought what I thought were cute.
Oh my I am so far behind again! Every couple days checking in is hard to keep up with everyone!

Danz/Trish- Did you guys get your roo squared away? Sorry I have been such a disaster running back and forth. My car looks like I live in it right now. With four dogs in the back and half our life jammed into the rest of it there is hardly room for me to drive!

Maidenwolf- Were you looking for serama and cochins for pets? If so I have a few pullets of each that are culls and would be sold this spring. They aren't breeding quality but would make wonderful pets. I have to take a pic of a couple breeding birds that a gentleman is interested in so if you are looking for some pet quality birds let me know!

Hawkeye- Thanks for loaning us your plumber! He is a super nice guy. I hope he wasn't too annoyed with me on Friday. I didn't realize he was so close to being done so we were out in the pasture yacking with the barn builder when I realized he was done and packed up and waiting on me! Oops!

Hope everyone who has been ill is on the mend! My sister lives in Boston and the flu has just been rampant there. We spent the weekend working on packing here and working on the chicken pens down there. We had a small snafu with the tractor and auger. The Kubota is only designed to drive the hydraulic auger down in one direction so it kept getting stuck, like really stuck, every couple inches and we would have to manually back the thing back out. With 40 some odd post holes to dig we only gone 1 1/2 done. SO we have found a guy with a bobcat who is very reasonable and is going to come out Friday and buzz all our post holes out for us! I also have a really nice guy who is going to build us our horse run in kit from Sutherlands and he came out on Friday and met with us.

Great American Hardwood Floors started working on repairing and refinishing our hardwood floors today. Super nice bunch of guys!!! I was really impressed with how thorough they were on our walk through this morning and am SOOOO excited to see the floors when they are done. Can't wait. And my plaster repair kit came today in the mail so that should be an interesting project. I hope it goes fairly well.

Danz- Forgot I was going to ask you, when you build your pens, do you use the nail gun to put the rails and posts together or screws? We used the nail gun to manufacture the sandwiched posts and it seems like the nail gun would be super fast but I don't know if it is as sturdy for constructing the actual pen frame?
Wow Josie, you have been a busy girl, it sounds like you're making good progress on the house though. Yes, thanks to Frizzled Pink we did get the little Speckled Sussex down here to me & he is a spunky little guy now that he's starting to get a little more comfortable. He made me chase him all around tonight to get him back in the coop at bedtime, naughty boy. He was just determined he would go in when he was darned well ready, not when I told him to. He will get the hang of things soon, they all do. When he finds out they get treats at bedtime he will go in with the rest.

I was dragging big dog run panels around tonight to just get them close to where I want them when the coop is done & see how it would look. I have the outside ones but will either need more panels or just will build fence for the dividers inbetween for each pen. There will be four rooms in the coop so four pens outside & each will need to have it's own gate. My DH hasn't wrapped his head around that at all yet, that he will have to help with pens, he's got his brain on the inside walls right now & that's OK, I need that done first.

LOL yeah right, i really got the better end of that deal. I am a chicken newbie and got to see "BIRDTOPIA" and got a fantastic rooster from Trish. I was lucky enough to show restraint and not bring home a puppy, although i think my idea of a good afternoon would be (on a warmer day) to sit right down in your yard with a bag of sunflower seeds to share with anything with wings and get lots of puppy kisses--with Clouds approval of course.

LOL! I'm sure you'd get them too. Those little devils change every day. I fed them two pans of feed today and the second time they jumped out of their sleeping pile and came running to me. Doesn't take them long to figure out where goodies come from. Also one managed to jump out of the dog house this evening when Cloud was laying outside tempting them. I'll have to be shutting the gate soon or I'll have puppies all over the yard.
So many of the girls were hidden in their coops yesterday you didn't get to see the numbers. If you sat down with the sunflower seeds you'd have a lap full of chickens. I just sit on the back step and yell "cheekons" and they come from all directions. Sometimes I end up with a duck or two as well. I really wish it had been at least 50 degrees warmer when you were here.

Nope I sold about 50 of them to a guy in Missouri and kept my favorites. Then sold those to Josie some time ago other than a couple of birds I gave to friends or had traded for other birds. Maybe if she hasn't pulled those eggs from the little hen she would sell you those if you could get them somehow.

If anybody wants silkies or cochin chicks an ad just went up on the Kansas Poultry Swap, get them while they're hot! It seems like people are really starting to post chicks & some are taking pre-orders for chicks already. Wow, I'm not going to take pre-orders when they're not even hatched yet, talk about counting your chickens!

Danz, I love the new name for your place, Chickentopia, now you need a sign for out front, ha!

I can't wait to get this wood tomorrow & get busy building walls inside my new coop, I'm so excited I can't stand it! I have to see some progress going on & for so long it just sat there with nothing happening. Of course I will have to wait until warmer weather to paint the whole outside of it, but that's OK, that can wait, I just want to get everything else done that can be done so I can start moving birds. I want to get them all put in their places so they can acclimate to them & then I will be ready to raise pure bred chicks.

Josie, that wheaten Ameraucana hen is laying really pretty blue eggs about every day now. My blue wheaten pullet hasn't laid as of yet. Oh & Danz, my black spotted SFH hen is now laying & she' s laying pretty good sized eggs too for a new layer, that's encouraging. The other two pullets haven't laid yet, I can't wait until they all start laying.

Ok thanks. I am just really coming up short trying to find some
