Trish--here is my new little girl
Oh she is a cutie! I love all the coloring around her neck, I'll bet she'll be a beauty when she's grown. I have one crested girl that is my favorite one, that is next to the little one I just got from Eileen with the mille fleur coloring.
Poor birds went from a nice warm brooder to a cold camper. I do have a heat lamp in there although all the birds shouldn't need one at their age. If the weather was warmer they wouldn't have gotten one. I'm hoping just getting them moved will save me some work. All those individual sections to feed and water take forever to do. Now they have a couple water bowls instead of the one gallon waterers. That alone saves me time. I put three big pans in there with feed but at least one of them will come out. I was trying to keep them from all trying to eat at the same time.
I'm going to have to increase the amount of fermented feed I produce. I feed more and more birds with it all the time and I need bigger containers to get it going.
I started a new one today with brewers yeast I bought from a beer and wine making business in KC. I plan to cook it for a couple days then start feeding it to the geese and peacocks. It should be really good for them. Maybe it will make the geese smart enough to figure out how to lay fertile eggs this year for me!!!
I'm glad you got them moved, I'll be that makes you feel good to have that accomplished.
Mammahen I put some regular bread yeast in my first batch of FF along with the ACV. When I go to the Swedish flower hen building instead of smelling like poop it smells like fresh baked bread! Seriously. Of course I have a super sensitive nose but that is what I smell in there.
So since no one who has been eating this has died or anything I think the idea of fermenting brewers yeast in the Sabastopols food is a win win. My only question I haven't answered in my mind is whether to add ACV as well. The only reason I wonder is would the mix mold without that ACV? If you are using just yeast and it is working okay I won't worry about it. Please let me know.
Josie, I've been having heart to heart talks with the goosies on a daily basis. I told them how much work the FF was going to be for me and how much it would mean to me to have babies this year. They yelled their approval and ran around acting silly so I figured that meant that they would try. In goose language I was sure that meant they were in agreement!

Hawkeye I have a huge metal pile. Most of it was from junk that was laying all over this place when I bought it. I have been wanting to get it hauled out of here forever. The problem is I keep digging through it and using this and that to make something. I've been promised forever we'd take it and cash it in but there's always an excuse.
I did sell another old car this past week! Yay! One less rat trap around. There are a couple more out there that DH wants to use to fix up one. It will never happen. I bought one of them and he lost the title to it so I never drove it. Grrr! And he hit a deer with the other one. He was always going to switch out parts and make one good car. He had another older car that he had totalled twice hitting a deer. So I sold the other one, donated the one I had bought to him for parts, and kept the money. It wasn't much but it got one moved. I'm the one that really lost money on the deal.
I guess if I outlive him I'll just sell them all as scrap metal.
Hawkeye I use those same probiotics but I often just put some in the water. They don't seem to mind it at all.
I woudn't feed with non-medicated feed myself. Health conscious people want a guarantee of no chemicals in their birds and want them fed non GMO feed and no antibiotics. It seems dumb to me to take the chance of getting cocci. Plus once you have an outbreak on your property you can count on having more outbreaks. Short of vaccinating every chick on the place I'd rather feed medicated feed and keep Corid on hand for an emergency. I have never had a case of Cocci at least that I know of. I'd like to keep it that way.
Josie I have mille fleurs d'uccle. They are very pretty. In this case the hens are the pretty ones instead of the roosters. You'll have to stop some time and see them before you make the move.
Let us know about how the yeast does with the FF, I'd be interested in knowing if that's better or not & how it works out. How is that yeast different than the yeast for bread?

I was so sick last night by the time my DH got home from work I was running about 101 fever & I just felt miserable. I am still not feeling good today & my right ear is hurting. I tend to get ear infections with any respiratory illness, I sure hope that's not what is going on. I hate taking antibiotics, I have had to take so many over the years from chronic infections that it has really messed up my body. I take probiotics daily, but when I take an antibiotic I have to also get diflucan to counteract the yeast, it's just a mess. I know I will have to lay around for the most part today too, I just have to get over this crud because my DH is wanting to go see his mom & I can't go if I'm sick. He's feeling well enough to work now, but still not 100%, he says this has been the strangest virus, whatever it is, that he has ever had.

I ordered 5 Barnvelder chicks yesterday & they will be mixed colors, double laced, blue laced, & splash, so I'm hoping I at least get some of the blues. I think they're just gorgeous. They're not coming until the end of April. I really don't want any more chicks to have to keep in the house. These two I have in here haven't been bad, but if there had been more I would have had a lot more mess. They're in my big metal horse trough that I first used for a brooder, it was easier to move in than the other brooders I have in the garage. I did get two Brinsea Ecoglows to use in my brooders & the one I have in the trough is working great. I still want to get one more because I'm going to build one more brooder since I'm getting broiler chicks in the spring too & they will need their own brooder. I have so much to do, I just feel like I can't afford to be laying around, but when you feel like I do right now there isn't much else you can do.

Don't you love this color? I have mille fleur cochins and they are still a project so their color has some work but they are cutie pies. I have mine cochins in with my orps right now for winter. In fact I went out last night to dose everyone with ivermectin and one of my cochin hens was jammed in between two orp hens and she was so snuggled in there I couldn't even see her until I parted the fluff! I bet she had a nice, toasty place to sleep.
I have never had d'uccles but I have heard they are very friendly little birds. I LOVE my bantam cochins, they are the sweetest little things. Very much pets, love to be held and fussed over, especially if you hand raise them. I have a few buff cochin girls in the garage that I need to find a home for that the friendliest little things because they have been in a cage and handled.
Darn, I can only see pics of the chicks? I was all excited to see Toby! His princely pooping self.

I actually got quite a bit done today for a change. I got everyone's feed and water filled, went to the feed store, cleaned part of the house, moved Lucie out to the garage, went to the dump and dropped of recycling. Phew!

I am losing multi posts. I remember hitting a quote on Hawkeyes latest post but it isn't here? Is that happening to anyone else?
Josie do you have pictures of the one that need homes whats the deference in the duccles and Cochin's

Maidenwolf I believe you are right now that I can see the comb and a few of the other feathers. I think she has some brahma in her.
I just spent an hour on the phone with verizon. I ordered another internet device and hope this helps my reception. I also found out why the dumb thing isn't working worth a darn as well. They actually shut my speed down in peak times because I use more internet than 95% of the population. One thing is I never shut down sites like BYC. All those stupid side bar adds and stuff that keep changing is racking up my usage. So I guess I am going to start closing windows and stuff. I honestly have no idea what my password is cause I never log in. It is just always up.
I really hate to do that cause I have no patience waiting for stuff to load.
Facebook and BYC seem to be my problem sites. So I guess I will take on some new habits.
I ordered a new 4G device that is supposed to help. I hope so. Supposedly it will work at higher speeds even though we don't have 4G coverage here. I know I am sick of crawling internet. I went ahead and paid for the new device so DH doesn't get it on the bill. He can't complain that way.
So I have wasted all morning and part of the afternoon so far. I've got to get busy around here.

OH Poop! I just checked the incubator. One of my few surviving Creme legbar eggs from the wreck hatched. It eviscerated itself and is bleeding to death. I think the bleeding has stopped but it won't last but maybe a few more minutes. I wonder if it was a birth defect or it somehow pulled it's guts out getting out of the egg.

Danz sorry about the chick, I hate that when that happens. Oh, the bread, it is a sour dough, but by the time you put the "Goodies" in and on the pan, it is really a sweet bread too me!

Oh no I am so sorry. I wish I had some to give you

Do you think red cochin and buff brahma? They are all so beautiful. I like to keep you updated on birds I get from you so you can see their growth.

Here is the black cochin Beast taken yesterday he is beautiful

sorry about chick

Thanks for the info Hawkeye, I’ll keep them in mind and I’m not ready to switch on what I’m feeding the chicks yet. When I figure out what I want to try instead I may divide a hatch into two groups so I can compare notes.

Josie, Toby was beautiful when I got him but gosh, he just keeps getting prettier. He still would prefer not to be handled but sometimes I just pet him just to. He’s a nice boy.

Danz, when I was sick I left the fermented feed alone and it molded just a little on top. We scraped it off and gave that batch to the pigs. I think it’s because it wasn’t stirred. I mean, mold needs moisture and air grow so it’s not like the whole thing was contaminated. Usually the fermented feed gets stirred several times per day so it doesn’t matter. I think that the ACV has other benefits, like making it more acidic which could prevent some unwanted growths. I intend to get the ACV when I get somewhere to get it. For now though, using the bread starter works. Also, yeast like to eat sugar and starch so I think having the right feed is important. Corn would ferment nicely. I had some apples that were going bad I chopped and put into the fermented feed this morning. I can’t wait to see how they like that.

So in chickens do they always have cocci present in their systems and if they get sick that means that their normal flora became off balance? Like in people, we always have strep or staph or even yeast everywhere but it doesn’t matter unless they take over. I don’t want to do anything to hurt my chicks or chickens, but I don’t want to follow blindly either just because it’s what everyone is doing. I want to know I’m doing the right thing.

Trish, this bug going around has been quite rough. It’s hard to get rid of it. I started getting it last Wednesday and today is the first day I’ve actually been able to work since I totally crashed on Friday. I worked all morning but by 2pm it was all over, I’m so dizzy I’m just sure I’m going to fall over somewhere. Rest up and settle in for a long run, it’s really not worth trying to push it too hard. Look at all the relapses we’ve seen on here. It’s a great time to order chicks, you have lots of time to look and compare prices.

Maidenwolf, I always love seeing your pics and hearing you and Danz contemplate who came from who and all.

Danz, you are paying for internet and they take it upon themselves to turn down your internet because you are using too much? That doesn’t seem right. If you are promised internet it shouldn’t matter how much you are using. Unlimited is unlimited. If you have to turn off BYC can you go change your password first so you don’t have to go through all the lost password stuff?

I’m so sorry about your chick. That’s terrible! I had that happen one time, do you think that where the yolk absorbed just stayed too open? It must be bad. I wish you could just push it back inside but I’m sure that wouldn’t work. I’m sorry.

Maidenwolf he is turning into a very nice cochin boy. You should be proud of him. NO I don't have any buff brahmas, just light brahmas that are breeding age. The red cochins are (were) a really dark red. I would show you pictures but I sold all of them a while back. They were every bit as dark or darker than that girl is.
Checoukan, I've been thinking about sour dough again. I have the recipe to start my own starter. I just need some new recipes so I have options for making bread. The recipes I have were ones I used in the 70's. Mammahen has some and I am sure yours are probably different. I would like to try a couple of different ones. Like I need another project. I would love to find whole fresh milk to make butter, and make all my own bread again like I used to. That stuff is so good. I can't knead the bred because of my arthritis and my fused wrist but the kitchenaid mixer does a wonderful job.
I forgot to answer... I forgot who asked. There are hundreds and hundreds of different kinds of yeast. Each yeast has different characteristics, grows at a different rate and different temperature and tastes entirely different. The different yeasts emit different by products. I forgot what my son said these were called. So brewers yeast is the type that will produce more alcohol from using fruit or grains than a bread yeast. But it also produces excessive niacin which is why I want to use that for the geese and other game birds. I put one tiny packet in a bucket with just a handfull of grain and a couple gallons of water to experiment. It is totally bubble city today...like an earthquake is going on in there. I just bought one of the cheaper types of brewers yeast. They ranged from as little as $1.50 to as high as $75 for a package depending on what kind you got. I didn't figure the geese would care what kind of beer or wine flavor they got.

I didn't know all about yeast. I thought brewers yeast was brewers yeast until my son explained to me for a lot longer than I could pay attention, all about the different yeasts.
Mammahen thanks for that info. I think I'll add some ACV just to be safe. I have different things in a couple batches of feed. But for the most part I am just using my own grain mixed feed in the FF.
It works well. I don't think it matters much as long as you have some carbs and water to feed the yeast.
Unfortunately this was a cream legbar chick and the female chicks sell for $50 each... of course it was female!!! I don't even want to look. I imagine she hatched before her yolk was quite dried up. I've never had one do that to themselves. I had one some other chicks picked on and did that once. It really makes me feel ill. I hate to see anything die like that.
I have a beautiful Dan Powell Brahma rooster I have got to take a picture of. I bought mixed color eggs just of hatching one of these. I do wish I had a female to breed back to. I won't be able to get another cause he sold all his stock and quit breeding. It is a blue laced gold. It is the most beautiful bird I think I have ever seen and it is still young. Hopefully I'll get a picture soon to post.

Yes we are supposed to have unlimited internet. We have called and called problems and have always gotten the runaround. This is the first person who has honestly answered my questions and explained how they do things. I should be ticked but I was just glad to have someone tell me the truth and explain why it worked that way. We had the internet with Altel and it was great. When it went to Verizon just like our phone service it went to crap. We got the phones working after spending a chunk of money on a booster. DH purchased a new device on their suggestion that is just as bad as the first one. We've had it at least a year. Supposedly this won't happen with the new device. I need to make sure not to go over my limit with the new device when it gets here. The guy looked up our records and only one time (which was December when I was Christmas shopping) have we ever gone over that amount. They just charge $10 for the next G of use. Since the new device is $10 a month cheaper anyway we should be golden even if I do use a little more.
I shut down BYC and it logged me back in so I think I'm okay. It was so long ago when I first got on BYC I just can't remember my password. I used to use the same password for everything but for internet security and different sites needing different things I can't remember what is what I have a record of most of them but BYC and Facebook which I use the most I have no clue.
I've been scrubbing down my kitchen cabinets. Man they get dirty. I guess it is one of those many things I just don't notice. I've never had white cabinets before and I love how they brighten up the room but they sure do show the dirt more than natural wood.
