Girlie, we need a crew from the Bionic Woman to work you over and fix you up!!! That wrist looks like it hurts. So sorry.

I think there's just a fundamental difference in how folks incubate- I always had issues with shipped eggs not losing enough moisture over the course of incubation, and they had fluid still in there when they needed to pip- they drowned. I started experimenting with dry incubation and have used it ever since. I leave all the holes wide open, don't use any water at all until the first one pips, and I use a paper towel on the rack when that happens, so I can soak it and raise humidity immediately. It's in my signature below. Different methods work for different incubators, but that always worked for me and my styros. I think it also depends on whether your eggs are shipped or local- shipped eggs seem to need less humidity as they evaporate poorly.

It all comes down to experimenting with what does or doesn't succeed for you and your incubator. I know Danz and I have hatched thousands each and we have vastly different methods, so that shows how varied results can be.
I am going to try your method. There are many different ways of incubating and it is all on a personal opinion and way it works for you. This is a new incubator and getting it tweaked takes awhile. I sure hope this way works for me. The eggs are from my hens if that makes a differene in how they need to be dealt with. Thank you so much for the info.

If you don't plug those holes you can't get the humidity up high enough. You need the additional area to add water. I never saw the purpose of the holes in the bottom because if it isn't sitting like on an open shelf air won't go through the bottom anyway. You should have vent holes on the top for bringing in and removing air and the fan also works in the air exchange. If they aren't there I'd make my own. I can only speak from using the little styros in the past.
Maidenwolf what do you mean by drowning exactly?
I didnt like only having those 2 small chambers to hold water and that is why I plugged mine too. I just reopened them to see how it works that way. The ones that did not pip I opened them up and there was tons of fluid ont he inside, it had not even gotten thru to the air cell yet, but it was a fully developed chick.

It sounds as though your problem is not enough ventilation. When you plugged the holes, did you create some new ones to compensate? Hatching chicks need a ton of oxygen, so an exchange of air is crucial to their successful hatch.

I would love to come and have dinner with you. I am busy with DD all day but I think I will be free by dinnertime. I'll call you....
I was thinking the ventilation was an issue. I just went and reopened those holes on the bottom to see how this hatch goes.

Okay, I think I'll probably get done with my last audit for the day around 6 or so, and then I'll do the others on Sunday- I have to go to Food for Thought, too! And all of the Whole Foods Assns...and Natural Grocer, and Fresh Market, and...well I'll probably get home LATE Sunday night.

Anyway, are there going to be a lot of us? Is there a good affordable Sushi place? What about Thai or Indian? I don't know the area at all, and I love buffets, so who's got suggestions? We could meet as early as 6:30, or whenever works for you folks.

C'mon! Need to see some smiling chicken-kissers!!!

There is a really cool asian place on Rock Road-- I'll have to look up the name, I can't believe I forgot! But you grab a bowl and fill up your bowl with RAW foods-- it's like a buffet that you travel down and fill it up, pick out your spices, pick out your flavoring (several sauces are there) and then you take it up to the cook and there is a LARGE round shaped flat grill that they cook the food right in front of you. We typically sit down, but you can watch if you like. I LOVE that place! Let me go figure out what the name is. I go every couple of months or so.

FOUND IT! (found the name.. duh!) It's called "Genghis Grill" and it's a Mongolian stir fry place. I have no idea if we have really good sushi here in Wichita... LOL I've been to one that was supposed to be the best here and they closed down a few years back when the recession hit. After that, I stuck with the chinese or asian buffets, restaurants and the stir fry and noodle places! We also have a "Noodles & Company" further up on north Rock Road if that is something you like. We also have more authentic chinese buffets-- there is a really good one on Harry Street, and I know the owner. I forget the name of his place, but it's a big set up-- lots of goodies to select off the buffet. Any of that sound good???

If you like Genghis Grill you'll like HuHot better (in my opinion). They are at Rock & 21st (by Dick's, Best Buy, Gordmans, Applebees, etc). Same concept, but with free refills. My kids like to go there anyway.
And YES, there are some good sushi places still in town. A couple I would suggest are: Wasabi (on Douglas in Old Town a few doors down from Larkspur) is REALLY good, & SAKI (Central & Edgemoor in Carriage Park where Kobe's used to be). SAKI is more along the lines of what Kwan Court used to be. Wasabi is high quality stuff. Order the red dragon; comes to your table on fire.

oh how funny!! comes to your table on fire... LOL! I have never heard of HuHot! Refills, hu??! Is it the same thing-- you load up your bowl and they cook it in front of you? Same decent price? I've been chomping to get back to Genghis Grill again-- I'm so addicted! I would never need a refill though-- once they put in the noodles or the rice, it's all I can do to eat HALF of it! I usually am taking home a to-go box. Anyway, I'd be up for HuHot, too! Okay, I've seen Wasabi-- we hit up the cute little bars in the Old Town area, we like the Pump House and then there is this place called Henry's?? (I'm totally BAD with names-- so that's probably not the name of the place, and you'd think I would remember since we go there, sheesh--but they have fantastic food) Anyway, a while back, I noticed the Wasabi, but we haven't tried it out. I drive down that street-- is it 2nd St?? (laughing at myself-- I swear, I can find my way around, but I don't pay attention to NAMES-- I look at land marks) when I take my youngest to Preschool-- it's right by Old Town.

Gee whiz~~this thread has been busy this morning!!
Welcome to the newbies!!

DANZ!!
Good heavens, that wrist looks bad, and those screws, I know they hurt, that one looks like it could be puncturing the skin on the underside of the wrist!!

I guess once Ivy gets a job down here and moved, and we can both get a day off, we are just going to have to come up there, and help you on your pen needs. Maybe do an "All Call". and everyone converge on you for the afternoon and help out!

Hawkeye,
take that cock bird with you to the meeting, and put a price tag on him there, you just may get a taker. Good luck with the meeting. As you go over showmanship, make sure when you cover a new area, to stop and ask questions then, don't do the whole thing, and then ask for questions, kids will forget. Encourage the parents to ask questions too, they are the ones hopefully, will work with the kids at home. Do you have a diagram of a chicken pointing out different parts of the chicken? Do you have a pin the feather on a chicken board yet? OH I have some much stuff, but it works.

maidenwolf, incubating is easy, but sometimes, we do things to make it hard. Relax, and it will happen, Chooks gave some good pointers, danz has too, you might just have to combine what they are saying to find the best way for it to work for you.

I wish I was not so far away, I would come to lunch or what ever, but I can't!!

Ok, newest barn photo's
This is the south side looking to the northwest.

Above photo is on the east looking southwest thru barn.

It does not look they they are moving very fast, but with the cold, rain, mud, ice, kinda slowed them down. They are working on the east side of my work room putting up that wall and door today. I hope it does not rain too much, as they will not be working if it does. It is taking a lot of time to put the extra skylight, windows, and doors in. It is going to be so nice Its all I can do to wait to finish.

WOW-- that barn is looking awesome!! SUPER ENVIOUS!!! ha! Lucky girl!!

Okay- just had a ton of fantastic pointers there for my workshop! But what the heck is Pin the feather on the chicken??? It sounds like something I. MUST. HAVE! LOL

Okay... but seriously, where did you get it???? I don't have a diagram, but I can print one out. I guess I better do that too! Great idea about taking my boy up there-- I didn't even think of that! Maybe someone would want him! Especially if they like silkies... they may not like his price tag, though... Ah well, worth a shot!

Checoukan- thank you! I just want to get this incuabtor tweaked so I can maybe buy some hatching eggs from one of you. I set some of mine today so lets see how it goes.
Beautiful barn, I am jealous.

Danz- Do you raise light sussex? I was looking a some pics and the white bird I have from you looks alot like a light sussex

Maidenwolf, it will happen, sometimes it takes longer to get it right. I was one of them, I was convinced it was not meant for me to hatch eggs, until l learned.

Hawkeye~~ DUH~~ slap me around a little. I made mine, Get a framed cork board. Draw, or have someone draw or paint a chicken on the cork. Gather specific feathers off a regular feathered chicken, will work with silkies, but little more confusing. Get some push pins. You need to put the pin through the shaft of the feather. Have the feathers layed out labeled, then let your kids come up, pick out a feather, and see if they can place the feather correctly on the chicken! You can make it interesting by handing the kids the feather, that way they cannot pick out specific feathers. You can also, have body parts labeled, and they can label the body parts to.

Im not even sure who has my cork board! HMMMM gonna do some checking.
