Consolidated Kansas

I'm going to murderer my new keets if they don't hush up and there in the garage! I'm at the farthest end of the house and can still here the little things but they are super cute X3 there names are Splay (I introduce it like dis splay lol),splay leg, velocirapter, and whiteflame

LIZZYGSR My DD named our goose Lucy too.She taught her how to walk up the ramp to the coop every night to go to bed , what a character .
Sorry about the noise Polishpal ,"Splay" does that mean ones leg is wonky?

Is the goose wander around by itself or is it hanging out with the chickens? As long as it has companions it follows it will be fine alone. If not, you need to get it a companion. Just buy another female and you won't have to have baby geese.

Taking the dishes out of the dishwasher. I only do that when I am going to use them most of the time!!!

I haven't planted anything yet. It just keeps getting put on the back burner. My plans for a garden went south for sure. I still would like to try to get some beans in and some cukes, watermelon, and pumpkins. Since spring was so late I am going to guess that fall will be too. So maybe I will have time.
Hmmm... Danz, your comment disappeared from the multi quotes. I am just surprised that those English orp chickens are so expensive!!! Yowza!!!

So sorry for your loss Sharol. What a wonderful DH you have to take such good care of her in her last days.
Weird. I would have a terrible time opening the windows during a down pour. The rain here just blows right into the house.
22qZoo- Awww, I am sending you a PM.

My geese (all sebastopols) really love each other so I would think about getting her a friend. Geese behavior is very different than chicken behavior and I bet if you she had a friend they would hang out together all the time. One of those birds of a feather things. You don't have to raise geese, just keep collecting her eggs and don't let her sit on any and you won't have anymore.
I wish we had time for a garden. Next year!!! DH has square foot gardening boxes and I want to get them in this fall and start piling compost and chicken poo etc in them in prep for next spring.
Sorry for pic overload but here are the newest additions on the farm!!!

Proud new momma and daddy with their clutch!

Little darlings!!

Don't mess with momma!!! She is fiercely protective of her new little peanuts! I almost got flogged twice while attempting these pics!
(Which is very uncharacteristic of her btw)

Josie... very cute goslings. One of these days, I will get me some sebbie geese.

Does anyone in the Emporia area have a small incubator they would let me borrow for a single small hatch? I think my roo may not be doing too well (his feet again), and I'd like to preserve the strain, he is such a good rooster. The eggs may not be fertile, but I'd like to give it a try.

If you have one that isn't in use for the next month or so, could you pm me?

Sharol

Sharol, if you are coming this way, I will loan you my small Brinsea Incubator.

Polishpal, guineas rarely shut up, they're just noisy birds.

Argh... multi quotes just doesn't work for me... I do agree that guineas are loud. That's why I don't have them.

Well, I saw something weird today. I got off work and just as I opened the car door, I saw a peahen. She was just casually walking in front of my car across the parking lot. Mind you this is in town, in the parking lot surrounded by office buildings. Granted, these is a wooded area close by but seeing a peahen there just blows my mind. At first I thought it was a goose, we do have a lot of canadian geese around the pond, then thought it was a wild turkey. Nope. I'm pretty sure it was a peahen.

I was shaking my head in disbelief as I drove away.

We are all enjoying the chicks we got from Danz very much. Took them outside today, they "helped" pot plants. With the exception of one little lavender- it's favoring 1 leg over another and unsteady, as if its gotten an injury, still eating and drinking.

Decided to give the fermented feed a go, not too much extra effort on my part for the reward it offers. I soak oats, rye berries and quinoa for our use, so it stands to reason it would be better for their little guts.

DH got over being mad I brought home chicks by getting a Barred Rock of his own- wish I would have known it was that easy! Danz has gorgeous Barred Rocks. Should have quarantined the little thing but didn't think about it until too late.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Sharol sent you a PM. Tweety that is amazing. Peahens do have a mind of their own. Mine got loose last year and they went 1/2 mile to a neighbors and decided to walk on their porch and watch them eat breakfast! But they did come home when they got hungry enough.
Pinks4 girls, I'm glad you are enjoying the chicks. If the chick is falling on her side give her the contents of a vitamin E capsule twice a day. Just squirt it in her mouth. Also adding some vitamin B complex to their water might help. If they get a head injury which will make them loose coordination, vitamin E helps correct it. If they have a vitamin deficiency it is usually B1. Sometimes the chick starter doesn't contain enough of the B vitamins.
Tweety yes these English orps go for big bucks. That gal that Trish was talking to wanted $150 for her rooster. I priced some white chicks from Marc Sacre and they were over $200 each...yep just chicks
My lemon and lavender orpingtons are from English breeding but they aren't quite to the English standard. I am actually using some exhibition Buff Orps to breed more size into the lemons. The lavenders are smaller and I suspect it was a result of the breeding which gave them the self blue coloring. I plan to work on getting more size in them as well by doing some selective breeding later using the larger fluffier birds. I don't want to chance messing up their color because it is perfect. If I find one of my white orp roosters has the barring gene I will use him to improve the size and color of the lemons, plus use him to create a barred lavender orp.
I am exhausted. I had to go get feed today and then shovel it off. My back was already killing me before I started. So after that was all done then I decided to work some on the garden. I had stopped at the greenhouse on the way home and bought $42 worth of plants. Instant garden since I am so far behind. I bought two flats and a single pot of sweet potato starts. Anyway I went out and started digging and pulling weeds and managed to get some of the tomato plants planted. I bought several different kinds and colors just for some variety. Last year I didn't get a single edible tomato.
I also bought nearly a flat full of butternut squash. I have seeds but I wanted to be sure I got some of them. I love those things. To fill the flat since some of the pots didn't have any plants in it I added some watermelon. Again I have tons of seed but at least maybe these will produce. I bought just a few containers of peppers since I have tons in the freezer. I bought a variety of colors. I also got 4 eggplant plants. I've never had eggplant but I'm told that it is really good.
So maybe I'll manage to get the rest planted tomorrow and even get a few seeds in at some point.
There isn't enough of me to go around.

Gosh Danz you make me tired just reading what all you've been doing. I don't know how you keep going like that. I've been pretty busy today myself, but I can't keep up with you.

Anybody with goats, can you give me any hints on teaching a baby goat not to butt you with their head? My youngest one is like a puppy, she follows me around all over. The bad thing is she also jumps up on me like a dog & has started using her head to push on my legs. She is starting to get horns so I don't want her to continue this behavior. When I get ready to take them back to their pen at night to feed them she crowds my legs & sometimes will even walk between them. I'm afraid she's going to send me flying one day because it's downhill to their pen. Once I get them going in the right direction I usually can tell her "go to your pen" & she will trot off down there & go in & the other one follows. I just want to nip this butting in the bud before she gets bigger & stronger.

Well my next to last batch of eggs are in the hatcher & a few have hatched a day early today. I really am ready to be done with most of the hatching except for a few eggs for myself.

Danz - I'm with Trish, just hearing what you did makes me tired. :D As for eggplants, they are awesome. I always have these 2 varieties in my yard and they do better in big pots than in ground; Ping Tung Long and Machiao. They are Asian eggplant, long and skinny with white meat inside. Very soft. Perfect for steaming and stir fry.

Trish - hope someone will give you some tips on stopping the little goat from butting you. Doesn't sound fun to me. I can just imagine you getting majorly hurt by her.

I went to check on the broody hens, trying to candle the eggs. The one who has gone broody first was so upset that she pecked on an egg and broke the shell. She didn't do it on purpose. She tried to peck my hand and when I withdrew my hand, she pecked on the egg I just put back under her after candling. The egg just was just half sticking out. I was sad that the chick didn't make it.

Then onto the one who sat on the wrong empty nest, leaving her eggs in the next box over. When I lifted her up, I noticed that she was wet and slimy underneath. Apparently she broke an egg. It wasn't stinky egg explosion because it wasn't stinky at all. I think being inexperienced as a broody, she just broke it. I took the rest of the eggs out, cleaned them the best I could and also cleaned the hen's belly as best as possible and put her back on fresh hay. I don't think the rest of the eggs will make it. I didn't see any veins or signs of development and they are about 1 week old. I'm not sure what to do now. She is as broody as a broody can get. I don't know if I should toss out the eggs and put a few new eggs under her or just try to let her sit on those eggs which may not hatch. Or try to break her broodiness.

Argh ... just madness..

Time to callnit a day..
