Hawkeye, I'm glad you got out of OKC when you did, glad you're safe. My son & his GF were caught out in the storm & he said the car got damaged pretty bad, but they were OK. They were without power tonight. Wow, unbelievable that they keep getting hit over & over again, just unreal.

It's weird how OKC keeps getting pummeled ,the company my DH works for has an office down where 44 & 40 cross. All the employees are fine but sounds like the building may have a little damage. It will be good to see this weather system move on out of here.

Trish I'm afraid you may be stuck with her butting. Butting is fun for goats. I swear I used to think they were going to break each others necks. It's also a sign of affection and with her butting you it is like mimicking the action to make the milk come down. She obviously views you as her momma. I have an idea but I'm gonnna tell a story first.
I had a goat once that used to butt me and she was always sneaking up behind me and butting me. I was out at our burn pile (this was back in the early 70's). I bent over to shovel the trash into a pile and the goat butted me hard from behind. I had the shovel in my hand and without thinking turned around swinging and hit it square on the head. It did a boink sound and I thought I had killed the goat. She stood there about to fall over shaking her head like she was trying to unscramble her brains. Her butts up to that time had been gentle but after that that goat hit hard and fast. It was still my favorite goat. Very sweet but if she ever got behind you or caught you not looking she would hit you full force. Best to let the little devils have fun butting each other. I think in this case ignoring them if they butt is the best thing so they don't make a game of it. Sure wish Checoukan would jump on. She might have something that works.
The only other thing I know of that deters a goat is water. If you carried a bucket of water (it wouldn't have to be full) with you when you walk them down and she butts you, try throwing the water on her. If you do that a few days I'll bet she stops. You might have to carry the empty bucket for a while after that so she doesn't figure out you aren't a threat that way. Goats are too smart for their own good.
Tweety, I wouldn't candle a broody's eggs if it were me. The more you disturb her the less likely she will hatch them. If an egg gets stinky they will normally kick it out of the nest. And sometimes they do accidentally break an egg and make a mess but unless the other eggs are stuck to her tummy it will be okay. I'd just be counting days until time to hatch and leave it like that. You won't have a stellar hatch most likely anyway. Mother nature has a way to kick out those that won't thrive.
I put a couple old drawers in my coops for the hens to use that have gone broody and refuse to break it even if they have no eggs. I put the one egg these two girls were sitting on in the drawer. I had screwed a board along the bottom to keep the eggs and straw in. The girls came back in, somehow got the egg out of the new "nest box" and were sitting on the floor in front of it. They are bound and determined to hatch on that floor. They keep kicking the bedding out so it is just plain boards.
I lost two more olandks hens yesterday. I suspect one of my barrels of feed had gone a bit sour. I added some more vinegar to it and it seems okay now.
I had lost another one of my hens two days earlier to being egg bound. I actually felt an egg in one of the hens and cut it out of her. I am going to incubate it. It was all ready.
Anyway I decided I know when to count my losses. I am selling my olandsk to Eileen this morning. I can use the pen space and I like my big birds better. I am staying completely away from the bantams now. I loved these little guys and they are beautiful. But I lost hundreds on them. I am going to assume that God has shown me this way where to make a cut. Slowly but surely I am going to get my breeds down to a manageable number.

Grrrrrr!

I spent my morning running around so I could get some things done. like getting all the bins of chicks fed watered and cared for and the ducklings. Then I had to catch three hens that I was selling to a person who called me. Got my name from someone else. Anyway they were supposed to be here at noon. So 11:54 they leave me a voicemail saying their brother in law was on their way with some chickens for them. I think they had about an hour's drive. I think they could have called me a whole lot earlier. I only sell by appointment and the reason for that is I have to scheduIe everything else around that and so I don't have two people here at once. What about time schedules do people not understand????
The worst part is these birds were in one of the stinking muddy pens and I had to run around sliding in the mud to catch the stupid birds.
I am pretty unhappy. I'm not feeling very well today and that just set me off. Normally it is all in stride.
I can't imagine having a life where you don't think about how your shortcomings effect those who do have to keep a schedule.

Welcome to the Consolidated Kansas thread! I can't think of anyone that has Delawares myself, but maybe someone else will know.

Danz, I know what you mean, I have had that conversation a lot lately with other people about how nobody seems to have any manners any more. If you tell someone you're going to be somewhere then I think unless someone died or you're dying yourself you need to be there. It's just plain rude to keep someone waiting when you know you're not going to show up. Everybody is busy these days & putting your life on hold for someone & then them not coming is bad manners. That's my rant for the day.

Today is the first day I am trying to introduce the two 8 week old silkies to the 10 week old bantam Cochins. I think it's going to be a challenge.

Having a bad chicken year here in Wichita! <sigh> In March, I bought 3 new chicks to add to our two layer hens who quit laying in December. Since then, one of the old hens died, and TWO of the chicks have turned out to be roosters! So now I just have an old red sex-link "pet" and a 12-week-old Buff Orpington, whom I've just introduced to the near-empty coop! I would LOVE to have a Barred Plymouth Rock (which one of the roosters was) and a Black Australorp (which the old hen was), but I will settle for almost anything. I love having a variety of breeds/types.

Ideally, I'd like to buy a couple of young pullets, about the same age as my Orpington, but at this point, I'd settle for anything from chicks to year-old hens. If anyone within about an hour of Wichita has anything like this for sale, please message me or email me at gretaperl at cox dot net.

I miss my fresh eggs!
