Consolidated Kansas

Hello all! I am new to BYC and to my poultry friends. I live in NC Kansas and have 12 chickens, 3 turkeys, and 2 geese. I never realized that poultry could be so relaxing to watch. My new feathered friends and I are learning as we go. It has been an exciting journey so far.
Welcome dwink2, glad to have you here, feel free to jump in any time. What kind of chickens, turkeys, & geese do you have?
Welcome dwink2 !

So Babs son jake snapped this photo this weekend...
Our Buff Orp "Lil Roo" and "OB" our EE cockerel...

That's a pretty roo Rooster & your Buff Orp has more feathers than mine right now too. I have some birds molting right now.

It's going to be a scorcher today, so everybody try to stay cool. It's not going to be a good day for the animals or birds out there. I've got to go out in a bit & take frozen bottles of water to my rabbits, they don't do that well in the heat. Thank goodness I have some good shade for them to be in, but it's still hot.

We had a pretty good day with our granddaughter yesterday, but she ended up crying about a kitten when she left. She just loves little kittens & she latched onto one again when she was here & brought it into the house & played with it the whole time she was here. Her mom won't let her bring any more home because they have two cats they got from us several years ago & a Great Dane & have to pay extra for having them every month along with the rent. She is afraid something will happen to this one so she was upset when she left because another time she picked out one & something happened to it before she came back again. This child doesn't forget anything let me tell you, she has quite the memory. We were talking last night about how it's hard to believe she's going to be 9 years old in November, time flies by so fast & they grow up before you know it.

I have used the Veterycin on my dog for hot spots & it helped it a lot. She tends to get those at times, she has a lot of allergies.

I hope everyone is well. Danz- what color guinea do you have? I am really interested...
Here is my daughter with the 4 poults

I need a silkie expert here,, she turned out to be sizzle,, now she has black skin all except the head area,,, what do you think

Danz- I got these 3 gorgeous girls from you last fall as chicks

Another silkie question--- I think this lovely blue is a boy, He follows me around

My daughter is 37 ;-), so YRMV, but it works on lots of stuff -- changes the pH, I think, so that the skin rejects the infection or irritation, maybe.

Sharol - I didn't know that Vetericyn can be used on human skin? My daughter has rashes on her skin and from what I could tell, it was some sort of allergic reaction to something (not sure). She is my outdoor monkey girl and loves to climb trees (gasp!!) and run through bushes and what not. She is non-verbal so can't really communicate what was going on but she scratched it raw till it bleeds! I will have to give it a try!

My son has never been around chickens, or ducks. And in the beginning he did not want anything to do with them and now we as in rooster and i can't keep him away from them...lol he loves to feed the chickens and helps clean and change the the water. And loves to take the ducks for there daily swimming... and he adores rooster like me...:) i think that's pretty good for a 15 boy..who is raised in the city...lol

That's a pretty combination of colors.

It was dark (9:30) and I rigged a very bright (240 lumens) flashlight with a toliet paper tube and some electrical tape to make a focused bright light. The cardboard is soft enough to snug up to the egg and not let any light escape.

Honestly, I was surprised, too, at how clear they were. I can hardly wait until Wednesday to candle the ones in the incubator. NOT TOUCHING THEM UNTIL THEN.

Offtopic: These are the babies from a week and a half ago. I love those wing and tailfeathers..

I love that tiny fluff of a tail!

I hope everyone is well. Danz- what color guinea do you have? I am really interested...

I love the pictures, especially the crazy looking silkies! I can't help you with your question.

Welcome! We love to see pictures if you have any.

We didn't get any of that 14" of rain, but we sure do have heat today. DH found us another car to test drive and we were gone longer than expected. When I went out to deliver a cold banana to the chickens, their water was empty. Fortunately, I don't think it had been empty for very long because they all seemed fine and didn't come running to get a drink when I filled it back up.

I don't know if you're referring to my post when you're talking about rain, but we only got 0.14", not 14". :) More than 0.14" of rain would've been nice, but I think 14" might be a bit too excessive.

It is miserable out there today. Since I had to spend a few hours in town today at least I was gone during the worst of the heat. I moved a few more birds today. The gal that came to get her birds last had been here about 3 months ago. She was astounded how many fewer birds were here. I still can't understand my my work load hasn't been reduced!!! I finally made contact with a family member of one of my duck buyers. My buyer had been in a severe car wreck and is still hospitalized. I do believe though, that although I cut my price drastically they will buy all the ducks. I should know as early as tomorrow. That would be a huge relief although sad for me at the same time.
For those who have ducks spoken for I sexed them and separated them yesterday from the group.
I am sorry that the buyer was in a wreck but thrilled that I can finally move the ducks.
They take a substantial amount of feed and it will help.
Sharol those chicks look huge already.
Maidenwolf the keets are pearl, pearl pied, lavender or lavender pied. I sold my white keets and my white adults and I didn't have any in this last hatch. I do hope I hatch some out of the eggs I have left. I still have a few eggs that haven't pipped yet.
I love the sizzle looking girl. Of course if the skin isn't black she isn't a pure silkie but she is as cute as a button! Who cares if her skin is black anyway. I think she is adorable. Looks like that boy is a definite blue.
DH is picking up some bean seed for me today so I hope I can get a late crop of green beans in this week. I sure hope I don't make any chance of rain stop by planting!!! I wish I knew if fall were going to be late like summer was. I would plant more stuff and hope I could get produce before it froze. I finally found my bag of seed I had misplaced. It would be nice to have some beans to can and eat later this year.
It's amazing how just a few days has made a huge difference in how I view things. Now I am thinking storing food for the winter.
