Danz and Cherwill , you guys crack me up , I'd like to know how to ferment pickles too. Is it like sauerkraut ? Now I'm curious I'll have to go look it up.

I just got in a bit ago & headed straight for the shower. I really did a number on myself this afternoon. I was out in the former turkey pen & I thought I was being careful, I had been in there working for quite some time & about the last pvc pipe I went to put up I slipped & fell flat on my back in the poopy mud. Oh boy did I reek the rest of the time I was outside, it was horrible. I'm just now feeling the effects of that fall too & I'm starting to really hurt. When I fall I fall hard & it's not good. I was determined I was going to do the rest of the work by myself since my DH made me so mad this afternoon with his attitude. I got one tarp up but I need to hook the other one onto that one & get it up if I can move at all tomorrow. It's the back half of the pen where I need to get the other tarp up there & I will need a ladder to reach it. . It was really a pain getting that first tarp up & hooked on. Getting it up over those hoops was really hard by myself, it sure would have been easier with a helper, but I don't want to wait for someone to help me that doesn't want to help. I have to hear this is not my hobby every time I ask for help so today I told him I wasn't asking him any more. That will make him happy.

I'm sorry you fell. I feel your pain. I was out playing with my project horse yesterday evening, and I misread all the signs he was giving me. I ended up putting too much pressure on him, and he freaked out on me and tried to run away. I didn't let go of the rope, and he yanked me off my feet and gave me a rope burn. My back has been hurting me recently (probably just typical pregnancy aches and pains), and the fall didn't help me any.

At least I was still dry when I stood back up. We don't have any mud out here to speak of, and I was in the horse pen where the poo is considerably more spread out. Hope you get feeling better soon!

Fermented pickles do end up nice and crisp and crunchy. I've made fermented sweet pickles and bread and butter pickles but could never find a recipe for fermented dill pickles. I didn't plant any dill so I will have to use dill seed. So I really want to try them. I haven't been impressed with any refrigerator pickles I've tried.
Cherwill I used to be OCD about cleaning as well. I think I associate that with the most unhappy period of my life. When I really had nothing else to look forward to. I decided it wasn't worth being unhappy and went full swing the other direction.
Trish I am so sorry you fell. I fall all the time due to my nerve damage in one foot and an unstable spine. I don't even fight it any more. I just kind of tuck and roll now and let it happen. Once in a while I do get hurt but most of the time not fighting the fall and trying to go with it keeps me from severe injury. I do believe I cracked a hip a couple years ago with one of my falls. I never had it checked out but it took nearly a year for the tenderness and pain to go away. I had caught my foot stepping over a fence and landed hard on my rear end. There was no way to avert that injury. I am pretty sure I will have broken bones sooner than later. I have osteoporosis in my hips and since that is the heaviest part of me it tends to land first.
22Qzoo, fermenting pickles is done in a crock. The process varies by what kind you are doing. Most require dumping off water and adding boiling water every day. You weight the pickles down under the liquid. Some require you to remove the scum off the top on a regular basis. They are a lot of work but the only way you will get nice crisp great tasting pickles. I've even made corned beef a few times in a crock. Now that is gross if you think about it. It takes like 3 weeks and you put the brisket in the crock raw. So you have raw meat fermenting for a couple weeks without refrigeration. It does taste great though when you finally get to cook it.
Lizzy please be careful out there with the horse! We want that little bundle to stay safe.
We got another torrential rain last night. It poured for a long time. I lost one of my English orps and another one I don't think will make it. She appears to be in shock. The dumb birds sleep outside in the corners of the pen instead of going into shelter. I've tried numerous times to put them in but they keep going back out. This one I have drying in the incubator in hopes to get her core temperature back up. I think she is in shock though cause she is trembling uncontrollably. Her eyes were closed but she did open them when I checked her while ago. I tried to give her some pedialite but she wasn't interested in drinking at all.

OkieQueenBee, Happy Birthday! That's a cute pic of the guineas!

Danz, Happy Birthday to you as well!

Thanks for the well wishes about my fall, I'm feeling it still today. My back in sore & I stretched a tendon in my left leg that is ouching when I walk. I slid with my left foot for aways & then both feet just flew out from under me so that I landed square on my back. That sounds weird but I never fall in a coordinated way, it's always some stupid position I end up in. When I have fallen before one time I did a number on my right knee & tore my meniscus & had to have surgery & another time I fell outside on some rocks & had to go to physical therapy for awhile on that one. I think because of my arthritis that is so bad in my knees I don't pick my feet up as well as I need to & then I trip a lot. This particular fall yesterday was just due to the gooey mud, not tripping, but that's what I do a lot of the time.

It rained again last night here, I don't know how much rain we got, but we sure don't need it right now. The forecast only says 20 percent for today, but 80 percent tomorrow & then they added a rain chance for Friday now. When I looked yesterday the rain was supposed to end on Thursday. Ugh, more mud.

Gah! I hope you're not too sore today.

I'm sorry your DH isn't very supportive of your hobby. DH loves our chickens. We do have various interests that are ours alone, but we try to take a bit of interest in the other's activities and support them when we can.

Cherwill, we lived in Arizona for a year, and now I HATE dusting. The dust storms were horrible. We'd have INCHES of dust everywhere inside the house after those storms. You couldn't pay me enough to move back there!

I flew into Phoenix during one of those storms. You couldn't see anything. The pilot informed us we would be beginning our gradual descent, then we dropped like a rock at high speed, turned sideways the whole time. He was doing it on purpose, to avoid having a wing catch that wind. Everyone on the plane applauded when we came to a stop. It didn't make me want to live there.

My "kids" came up to sing "Happy Birthday" to me this morning!

That's the cutest thing!

I try to be careful. I haven't ridden in what seems like forever! This time, it was completely my fault. I pushed him too far and thoroughly scared him. He was only reacting out of fear for his life as a result of what I did (moved my carrot stick too fast and put too much pressure on him).

Is it really your birthday??? It is mine too! I actually forgot until my sister sent me a Happy Birthday via an email.

I fell once about 4 feet when I was pregnant with my oldest daughter. She quit moving for over 4 days. I really thought I had killed her. That was back before they had ultra sound.

Chicken Danz - Happy Birthday to you as well. Enjoy your day the best way you can.
This sounds like a tough bunch of gals on here, everyone be careful, but keep on persevering. Nothing better than to stand back and admire the project that YOU accomplished.

QueenBee hope your day is great as well. I'm afraid mine is going to be spent cleaning and wading through the mud, but it still beats showing up for work and being miserable.
