Sure they can eat the mealworms. Dried ones are fine. They tend to crumble a little anyway.

Ash if you were closer I would give you some chicks for free to replace your roosters. I have several broody raised chicks and several barred rock babies I could part with.

When and if they do turn out to be roosters, should the new ones we get be around the same age? I wonder how hard thats going to be to do?

Ash it would help if they were but you can always integrate various ages. If I were headed that direction I would bring you some part way but don't have any immediate plans. I'll let you know if I do. I would probably be down toward Wichita or that general area if I was that direction if that would help.

We would be more than willing to drive over to wichita!

By city law we can only have 5 (becuase of the size of lot we have) but If I can find 3 more 5 ish week old chicks that are believed to be girls, I would be willing to raise all 8 until we knew for sure and then could phase the boys out.

I posted in the "What gender or breed" group and they all said # 2,3, and 5 as roosters.

Is there anyone else closer that might have chicks, around 5 weeks that are pullets?

I am not sure what my dogs are thinking. They are a beagle mix and a yorkie mix. The beagle mix Shiloh was laying above them on the couch looking in and everytime Douglas walked by he would growl at him. I'm not sure if he is thinking they are food or what!

LOL! I have pictures of my dogs staring at chicks, too. The weim actually got one of the first chicks we got, before we got a permanent pen made. When she goes outside, she will patrol the outside of the pen once, just like she does the rest of the yard. Then she ignores them. The vizsla spends a lot of time outside the fence to the pen, looking for "goodies" to eat. She also occasionally stalks a chicken. They just stare at her through the fence, completely not intimidated.

I got a crock full of dill pickles started for fermenting yesterday. The only thing I worry about is it said to leave a quarter inch of stem on the cucumbers. When I pick them the stem comes off. I hoep that isn't super important. If it is I guess they will fail. I'm not sure what the stem would have to do with pickling???
Now I'm going to have to locate my pressure canner. I think I will need to replace the seal on it before I can anything. I am still hoping to have some beans to can a little later. The plants seem to be doing really well. I am guessing it is in our storage building cause I haven't seen it in the house.

I can't imagine the stem would be THAT important, but I don't actually know anything about fermenting pickles. Interesting.

We're planning a trip to the garden this afternoon. Unless the beans have all died since DH checked things out yesterday, I'll be canning beans tomorrow. I should be able to pick a few more tomatoes today, and of course eggplant. We still need to do more thinning in the fennel, but I'm running out of people to give it to and I still have plenty in the fridge! I think I'll get about a dozen carrots, too, if I can.

Eggplant must be the hardiest plant on the planet. Every year, ours is attacked by potato bugs at least twice. We pick them off every time we're out there, and after a couple of weeks, we won't see any more. This year is wild. They're just covered in the bugs. We're not out as often, because of the rain, so instead of picking bugs every day or every other day, it's only been once a week. We pick dozens and dozens of them each time. The leaves are all chewed up. If we walk away and come back in 30 minutes, we can pick another couple dozen off them. We've never managed to get the plants bug free this year. Despite all that, they keep producing beautiful eggplants like crazy.

Sharol, Limon's crowing is hilarious . And he is only 2.5 weeks old. He sure is a handsome dude though.

Cherwill, it looks like your garden is getting out of control due to the rain. But you sure have a bountiful of crops coming in so that's always awesome!

Danz, take it easy for a day. You may get to feeling better, energy wise. But it's always easier said than done. If I'm closer to you, I would get some chicks off your hands, including the peachicks.

22qzoo, my roo was attacked and his eye was swollen shut. I used the Veterycin eye gel on it and he got better in a couple of weeks. Hope your bird recovers soon.

Hechicken, so sorry you lost your turkey hen. Glad you have some of the offspring. RIP Madge.

Trish, you have to be interviewed to be accepted as a patient? Now that's the first time I've heard of it. I hope he /she is the best of the best.

Well, one of the broody mamas is, once again, broody. She has now making herself quite comfortable in one of the nest boxes. Since I lost my head rooster, I decided to let her sit on some eggs and hatch some chicks for me. I hope she is not as clumsy as last time. She broke a couple of eggs and contaminated the rest. She ended up co-parenting the chicks with another mama and did a wonderful job as a first time mama.

My DH finally got a load of sand in for the coop. I'll be out there shoveling them into the coop and covered run after lunch.

Tweety I have some chicks I'd be glad to donate if I get down that way or someone gets this direction. I really want to go visit Deerfield and Josie as soon as I can afford to get away. Most are mixed that broodies hatched. I sell the peachicks but still have some I would sell. I also have more baby ducks. Had a repeat duck buyer call yesterday and want some new hatches next week. I have quite a few from a week to 5 weeks old out there already. I wish he wanted some of those. I'll be setting eggs for fall hatched purebreds soon.
I do have a bunch of eggs I have collected that I need to start in the incubator today. I just started gathering lavender orps again. I have one hen sitting on a bunch and I just started taking what the other hens lay she doesn't grab. I really need to get back to work on pens. I need to clean out one more coop and move the white rocks and the hamp roo in there to breed the red stars. I almost hate the idea of doing all that hatching again. I've never completely stopped but I've enjoyed not having hundreds every week.

Danz, if you do get down this way bring me some of those ancona ducklings, I would love to have some of the color you have. Let me know when you plan to come down & I'll meet you at Deerfield's place. I would love to see her again too.

I still can't tell what sexes my two peachicks are yet, they should be getting to the age I can tell soon. I'm really hoping for two peahens, but anything but two peacocks would be great. I already have an extra India Blue peacock, so if I have to peahens he could go in with them. I have them right now in the little pen in the run outside the main coop & they're enjoying being out there now that they're not so freaked out I think. It was just a big change from being in a brooder in the house to out there.

I let my turkeys out today for the first time in about two weeks, so I hope they behave themselves & stay here. Oh & HEChicken Bandaid displayed the other day, he hasn't gobbled yet, but he was displaying in the pen. They were so excited to come out to free-range today they just ran & flew all over for a few minutes stretching their wings. I just wanted them to get used to the new pen & know it was home & try to break that one hen from running off. We'll see if that worked later today or not.

Ash, my little Yorkie is just fascinated when I hatch chicks, she wants to watch them all day. But watch out if they get out because she would kill one if she got hold of it. She did hurt one that got loose one time. I think she didn't mean to, but she knew it didn't belong out there & she grabbed it by the foot & hurt it's foot. I had to splint it & then it healed OK & the pullet is fine to this day.

Wow im acually home for the weekend its nice! Danzplan a trip to wichita and i will teach you how to make lotion out of easily avalible kitchen ingrediants.. Or we could make soap i think you had asked me for that also you can take home some wheat if you want it! ( and meet up to drop off ducks or what ever)
