Lizzy I hope that works for you. I would have opened the wound. Not sure if I would have picked the scab, but you do need it open to heal.
That reminds me I found a cochin pullet with a huge (what I thought was an abscess all across her front and down to her wing.) I gave her a shot of baytril and punctured the abscess and only air came out. She started wheezing but she wasn't feeling good at all so I attributed it to that. Then yesterday I noticed she was every bit as swollen again so I gave her another shot and this time I made an incision in the big "abscess" and tried pressuring out the air. This time I could see she was in real distress. When I let the air fill back up she was fine. Apparently she has an open air pipe or open lung and all that air is what she is breathing. I put some antibiotic and some more alcohol on the incision hoping I didn't prevent her from breathing. I checked later and she was running around feeling great. At least the medicine is helping her feel better. I doubt she will live very long because there is no way to protect her from being punctured with something. Of course it had to be a pullet. I will have to do an exploratory home necropsy when she dies to see what is actually going on. I would be thrilled if she lived and thrived though. She is a very sweet little girl and is getting used to being handled.
I was out working but can't see for the sweat running in my eyes. It's miserable hot and humid out there. The ice melted in my water jug so it was a good time to come in and check in on you guys.
Guess I'd better get back out and see what damage I can do.

I'm sorry to hear about your pullet. I hope she survives and thrives!

For my duck, how would you have opened the wound without picking the scab? Would you have made a new incision instead?

These are the 3 babies i hatched in the incubator 4 weeks ago.

This is the middle sized chick. (s)he is part Marans and part Buff Orpington i think. The orange feathers are pretty distinct.

This is the middle chick's comb:

This is the smallest chick. I'm calling (her)him Raven. his/her comb is pretty small, she has feathered feet, she and appears to be pure Marans. i'm guessing black/copper (Danz? what do you think)?

Raven's comb:

And then there is Chickzilla. He is huge, and daddy was obviously the large BO. His comb has been prominent every since hatch, and I think he was trying to crow last week (it was pretty pathetic, but he was standing on the waterer and had his neck stretched out and was making a scratchy record sound).

Chickzilla's comb

This is all three of them together. The black chick is closer to the camera, so s(he) appears larger than she is.

Any guesses on gender at 4 weeks? I know it is too early for feather sexing, and I'm pretty sure about Chickzilla.

I would have taken something sharp and just cute where it looked the puffiest. I'm sure it will be okay. If I can cut in a breathing cavity and have the bird run around like normal a few hours later I am sure picking a scab would be fine. When my goose was lame he had a scab on one side of his foot but I found a bubble where fluid had gathered and cut that open so it could drain. Sure glad to hear the Baytril is working for you.

That is the cutest picture of a chicken face I have ever seen! She is really cute and I don't think I've ever said a chicken is cute before. Yep Looks like the big buff orp boys were being pretty busy!.

I would guess the same but it almost looks like there is barring on it's chest. That confuses me. Otherwise it looks like a black copper. The comb is right. Looks like a girl as well.

Love the name Chickzilla. He actually looks like he is going to be beautiful. Love the coloring. When I look at the picture of the three together looks like the middle sized chick might have had some blue parentage. Does she have feathered legs? If she came out of one of the eggs that wasn't quite as dark she could have come from one of the blue marans hens. If I were going to guess by heads alone I'd say chickzilla will be a boy. The other two look more female to me. Give it 2 weeks and you can tell for sure by the feathers.

I had to come in. I got the divider frame for the pen built. I didn't build a door or hang wire yet. It just got too hot out there to even think. I came in and am trying to cool down a little before I go back out. The poor birds are miserable out there. I decided to wait until later to feed them. They will digest better if it isn't so hot out. Most of them have feed left any way. They just think they need fresh. They all got water so they'll get by.
My white cochin hen hatched either 5 or 6 babies yesterday. She had them out to eat this afternoon. I think only one of them is actually her offspring.
It will be nice to have all the breeds separated some day.

Well I did manage to go get feed today & got half of it unloaded, but am leaving the other half for my DH to bring in when he gets here, I ran out of steam. It was really hot here today & it just sapped my energy completely.

Morning everyone!

I just wanted to put a shout out that if anyone needs to get rid of a rooster or three, my neighbor is in need of some. Breed doesn't matter, she is in it for the eggs. The coyotes have been rather thick around our area in the last year and she has lost all but one rooster. PM me or try catching me on the list here. Thanks in advance!

We are still in an exception (worst stage) of drought and could really use some of that rain that ya'll have been complaining about. Would you mind sharing the wealth???

I really wish I could.

I'm not too inspired today, it's hot here & I'm not much in the mood for doing anything. I got out & took care of the water for the front pens & the rabbits & let birds out this morning but that's the extent other than digging some mud away from my two pens in the front so I can open the doors easier. It got washed down there before we got the wall built & I have been fighting it since then. I'm trying to dig it back out & put it on the other side of the rocks to help hold them better.

I'm feeling the same way; must be going around! We spent some time in the garden yesterday afternoon, quite a bit longer than we'd planned to spend, and it just sucked all the energy out of me. I'm not acclimated to the heat like I have been in the past. Spoiled this year, I guess.

I love the pictures!

I have several pikeman, but it's a hike to my place from there. If she doesn't find one before I come up to KC for my Dr. appt. maybe I could bring one to her then, but otherwise I'm too far. Usually it's not that hard to find roosters though, you only need so many.

I'm not used to this heat either now, it was so cool for so long with the rain & all that now I'm really suffering. I hope it doesn't last long & goes back to a little cooler anyway.

Don't you mean she needs hens? I can not get my roosters to lay eggs.

I am wiped out this morning. Working out in that heat yesterday was unbearable. Today I think I am going to try to catch up indoors and take a break from the heat. Of course I'll still have a couple hours out there but the projects can wait until it's a little more bearable. I really wanted to get that divider up in that one pen but I guess one day won't hurt.
I had some ducklings hatch this morning. I really need the duck pen moved but I can't do it alone. These guys may get run over by the ones in the pen. They are getting some size to them now.
I wish the few I have laying would go back to laying in the houses again so I could just sell the eggs as eating eggs. That one broody turkey hen is sitting on one turkey egg, several chicken eggs and a couple of duck eggs. At least she gets a break from the Toms that way.
I don't know if she'll hatch anything or not.
I really wish I had a place to pen the Tom's separately so the girls could catch a break. Maybe we'll have a decent fall and I can get some more pens built. I'm still confused why I have to keep building pens when I have so many fewer birds??
I still need to extend one other pen quite a distance so I can separate my birds to breed the redstars. I guess if I didn't have so many young ones growing up right now I would have a lot more room. Note to self...sell birds...don't keep them!

It's a sad day here. The vet is coming out to euthanize our 16 year old Brittany/SH Pointer dog. He has hit a wall, and just doesn't have any quality of life left. He is my DH's best friend, and we have had him since he was 2 weeks old.

A photo from his youth (15 years ago).

Sleep well, Good Dog.
