We put the chicks in the coop early tonigth (Around 6) since we knew we would be out past dark, when we got home about 8 I went out and this is where I found my chicks "roosting"

The 2 cockerals above the door, they are being rehomed tomorrow and the 2 pullets above the window

I am guessing that as they grow larger that they wont be able to do this? Should I do anything to stop it now or not?

I wouldn't worry about it, when they get bigger they will gravitate to the roosts, mine always do. I have some young ones that try to roost on top of the nest boxes even though they have a top that is angled. The rest of the birds roost on the roosts built for them.

Thats good! I thought the roost I had was to tall, but they must of gotten on it to climb onto the window sill

The other night I was trying to catch ones of the roos to put him in the coop for night, and he jumped onto the railing that supports the hardware cloth in the run, and then like climbed up the hardware cloth, half flying, half climbing!

Hi Everyone! We have been busy finishing our chicken coop and pen and getting started on the next houses and yards. Chickens sure are addicting. Just wanted to share a picture of my flowers and chicks. They seem to know where to find the cool spots.

These are the mutt chicks that got us started on this crazy journey. They were hatched the end of June, they needed to be re-homed so we brought home 7 and now have 6.
Danz have you tried the local honey and pollen for your allergies? The ragweed is terrible this year. Aliaslucyvp, I know where there is a bunch of stinging nettles In Oklahoma, don't know that I would want to pick them though.
And all I can say about us Okies and our driving is if we have someplace to go,we are gonna get there so we can hurry up and get back.

Well, found another chick that was hurt, similar to the one I culled. I'm quite sure the injury was caused by the broody mama. I took all the eggs from her because I know she will just kill them once they are born. I'm mad at her... argh... I'll never let her hatch again.

The injured baby is now in the brooder in the house. I put a few chicks in with her/him to keep it company. I use bluekote so other chicks won't pick on it. I have been spraying Vetrerycin wound care on it and hand feed diluted pedialyte to her. She seems to be in good spirit. Her injury isn't as bad so I'm hoping she will make it. I named her Iamstrong.

It sure is hot outside. The pool pump quite on us so DH just got a sump pump to move the water around until the replacement part arrives next week.

I'm sorry you're having issues with the broody, but I sure like the name you gave the chick.

Cherwill - I have to drive with the cruise control on at all times! As you probably remember, "55mph" is an average in CA - if you have to drive for 5 miles at 30 mph, then you can go 80 to catch up - hopefully, the average is around 55! Here there are far too few cars in front of me to keep me at the speed limit. )

That made me laugh, because mine did the same thing when they were younger. I'd look in, and sometimes they'd be slowly sliding down the slope and having to take a step or two back up. They're not always the smartest, are they?

I was going to suggest the same thing. DH and I use local honey on our oatmeal every day. We've done it for years and it does seem to help.

Okie- those chicks in the flower pots are too cute! I like the darker one with the gold on her head and neck, pretty.
The thing I noticed about drivers is how their manners change depending on what kind of car you drive. When I had my little Kia it was easier to change lanes and people would let me merge on to the hwy no problem. Then when I got the really un-cool Chrysler mom van , the thirty-something and under men driving their pickup trucks or maximas turned into real jerks. Like pinning me in a lane when I needed to move over,or blocking the merge lane to get on the hwy. Oh, and the really pretty 25 or younger girls with the perfectly positioned sunglasses hold ing back her sleek blown out hair like a tiara , seem to think that real tight up against the back of my minivan is the place to be. Only until I turn the back wiper on (dry) and they get a face full of dust courtesy the gravel road that we live on .....oops , I went on a rant. ; ) Happy Sunday

Danz - how do you lose your chickens? We had a dog down the street kill ours a couple of times, and stray dog once, but mostly it is coyotes.
I actually haven't lost chickens to predators other than owls. I lost a couple to possums at one time. My dogs keep the predators away. The owls are sneaky though and fly in when they see an open opportunity and snatch a bird when the dogs are busy elsewhere. I've lost chickens to heat, to sickness, to being egg bound and then some babies that just fail to thrive. I just lost a pullet to being picked on when I moved her to a different pen. I pulled her out but I guess not soon enough. I have a whole chicken pharmacy and obsess about their health but some things just are unpreventable. When you have as many birds as I do it looks like I loose a lot but actually percentage wise I do really well. Most of my losses are babies because I don't have time to check for failure to eat and drink or pasty butt on all of them. I also let my birds free range when I'm not breeding for pure chicks which I am sure causes losses as well.
here is off topic advice: I am the allergy queen, so I read everything about them that I can...this year year I read about stinging nettle soup (fresh nettles) for allergies. I can send you the link to the articles, if you like.
Sure send me the link but I'm not sure I will try it. It depends on what it says. Stinging nettle is nasty stuff. I guess I could pick it with gloves on then throw away the gloves!! LOL
Next year I will absolutely find a patch and gather nettle to try it!

I agree with Trish. Don't worry about it. They'll all find their own comfy place in time.

I see crap like that all the time. People selling birds without even knowing what they are called. I would be worried about buying birds from someone who doesn't even know what the breed is. Like "banty" chicken is a breed? Or bard rocks or borrowed rocks etc. Craigslist is a great place to see stuff like that. I am not a perfect speller... more like my fingers are bad spellers... but really ???

Yep drive fast and talk slow!! I was probably worse than the average person even, because to stop a speeder we really had to move in and out of traffic at a higher rate of speed. I also had a habit of following other cars way too close because you have to do that when you are trying to catch someone. I felt very confidant I was in full control but it sure used to worry these Kansans once I moved back here. It drives me crazy when I go to a major city with my DH and he is driving. He has no idea how to drive in heavy traffic. He makes me a nervous wreck. I tell him he is the stuff that traffic jams are made of. I used to love high speed pursuits too. I was an adrenaline junky for sure.

That is one thing I do have to say about Oklahoma. If you are female most guys will let you in traffic. A wave of thank you with your hand is all it takes.

I have been ill an not on for a while, so I am kind of behind, but slowly catching up! I think two of my three lavender orpingtons are roosters, which means I may need to put one up for adoption. I also have 4 or 5 pretty Silver Laced Wyandotte boys who will need new homes. They are all about 13 weeks old, and able to be handled. Does anyone have room for a few boys? I hate for them to meet the stew pot, for they are all very sweet and friendly. I would be willing to trade for pullets. I am especially interested in Swedish Flowers, Aracauna, Orpingtons, Basques, and Marans.Feel free to message me.
