Consolidated Kansas

I am in wyandotte county. I have come to chickens though my son choosing them as his 4-H project, but took off with the idea because the thought of fresh eggs is very very appealing. Don't have chickens yet because we are still navigating all the laws and permits that are needed, seems no one knows, but as soon as I get that figured out I start building our coop.

TRISH44- wow, sounds like a wonderful vacation. ( except for the colds). Would love to see the world someday , I think I know just about every Rick Steve's travel show on PBS by heart. Hope you got to see some cool stuff .
ZIGZAG45- glad my degree in hillbilly engineering could be put to good use, that was exactly what I was thinking. I will be jealous of your watering system this winter when it's freezing out.
I have been working on re-doing the main chicken run . It didn't take very long for me to realize how bad my first attempt was ,after scraping my head a few times and always having to crouch to walk thru it , was just a matter of finding the time to get it fixed right. I think I'm on the right track this time , I'll post some picks when it's done .
Oh, ... ZIGZAG, about the hen with the floppy comb. From what I have heard , a lot of hatchery stock has had Leghorn mixed in to improve their egg laying ability . One of my buffs has always had a floppy comb.
If its red and she doesn't seem ill , it might just be the way she is.

It's really quiet here, where is everybody? I figured it would take me a lot longer to catch up on 2 weeks worth of posts but it wasn't as bad as I thought. I guess you're all out there getting things winterized, something I have to finish doing now that I'm back. I hope I can shake this cold or virus, whatever it is so I can feel up to doing what I need to. I have been on autopilot just doing what I have to do for my birds while I'm feeling so crappy, but today I had to clean out waterers & replenish the supply so that took me a lot longer. A lot of my hens are still in molt so they still look pretty rough, I'll be glad when they're done with that & look decent again. My turkeys are molting too so it looks like it snowed in their pen.

Hi all, I've been gone on vacation for the last two weeks & we just got back last night about midnight. We flew to Venice, Italy & spent two days there & then got on a ship & sailed to Greece. We had wonderful weather the whole time we were out there, calm seas & sunshine most of the time. It was a lot warmer than we expected it to be this time of year & a lot of other people were surprised as well. It was beautiful over there, this was our first trip to Europe & it was interesting. We both came back sick with bad colds, so that was the downside of our trip, so we're trying to recover from that now. It was the pits flying with a cold all day yesterday, we were just miserable. When we would descend on one of the 3 planes back home our ears would just scream with pain & it wasn't fun with being sick anyway. We were really glad to be back home to our own bed last night. I was glad to see my birds & animals & I think they were glad to see me. Our little dogs have been really clingy since we got home & the GPs outside can't quit smiling at me, it's really cute. I did have a couple of losses while I was gone, kind of par for the course.

Danz, I was trying to catch up on reading, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts & prayers are coming your way to you & your family.

Welcome! This thread is usually pretty busy and lots of great folks on here! I don't know what you have for animal control services but they usually have the laws on requirements for city chickens.

Maybe enjoying the last of the nice weather? My birds are molting right now and they look AWFUL! I am embarassed for them. DH was standing in the yard last night and my big black orp roo walked by and he laughed and said that rooster looks terrible! All his neck feathers are gone and his tail. Poor guy.

Well I should go feed the horses and let the geese out before the baby is ready for a nap. I really need to get the house cleaned today. It is a mess in here.

Welcome to our forum. It is usually very busy but things have been really slow lately. If you call the mayor and the animal control department and they know nothing of chicken laws it may be perfectly legal to have them in unlimited numbers. If you live outside of city limits most likely there are no rules. If you live in a HOA community be sure to check their rules as well.

So glad you are back.

I am glad you are back too. Maybe we should have our own little Picture Parade of molting chickens thing. A lot of mine are done but some of them still really look awful. My yard looks very much like it snowed.

Thank you all for your prayers and condolences. I feel it will take weeks to get caught up around here and to get rested again. I kept thinking yesterday after the funeral that I am an orphan now. I really have been very fortunate that I had my parents as long as I did. There are many people that loose their parents when they are about my age. It doesn't make their passing any easier though. My mother paved the way for us because she had a really awful death; so it made us appreciate that my Dad only had a couple days of major pain and confusion. That was just like my mother to take charge and do what she could to make things easier for every one else.
I can't say enough good about hospice. It was so nice that my Dad got to stay home his last days.
Meanwhile the chickens kept hatching. And now I have tons to do and lots of birds to move. There were some losses the last few days mostly from overcrowding and partly because I didn't have the time to care for them as I normally do.
I need to get my turkey pen finished up finally and get to work moving peachicks to a bigger pen. I still have the last couple that aren't old enough to go in with the others but most of them can go in one big pen for the winter.
Here it is nearly November and I am no where near ready for winter again. So much for all of my plans.

Thanks all. I have already got copies of the law and the zoning map. The neighbor has horses so it shouldn't be a problem but looks like it is a 90 day process to get an answer from the city, unless I can prove we live in an agriculture zoning and according to the map we do. Nevertheless I have a meeting next week with the zoning guy so we will see. I look forward to learning from everyone.
