Consolidated Kansas

Wow - it was 42 outside when I woke up this morning!!!

Trish, how is your Valentine's Day hatch going? I had 4 out of 5 pipped before I went to bed last night and 2 chicks by this morning.

I have 10 chicks so far, 15 more eggs to go. I had a couple of chicks hatch yesterday evening & then a couple more before I went to bed. The rest have hatched today. The ones left to hatch yet are Speckled Sussex & Wheaten Ameraucanas. I think all of the BLRW have hatched.

I have my appt. this morning to find out my MRI results on my knee, wish me luck that it's good news. I'm walking pretty well now so I would hate to have to start over now with knee surgery. I'm still really gun shy with walking near or on any ice or snow. I hope that junk gets totally melted off around here this weekend. Of course then there will be mud

I'm glad your turkey is on the mend, HEChicken.
I had a busy day yesterday....as usual. I went out and cut out all the wire and removed nails and screws, then chiseled wood to remove the old broken top board from the chicken tractor. I cut a new board to size, got it installed and stretched and stapled the wire to the new board. I got it done and moved the white cochins in there. My oldest girl has never been confined to a pen and she is over 3 years old. She is the best looking one of the group. The other two which were supposed to be from exhibition lines are not even close to her in quality. I am hoping she can still give me some fertile eggs. I only got the others last year in hopes of getting some of her offspring. She may not do well in confinement so time will tell.
I made a water bucket with drink cups on it as well and got it hung. I put the drop in water heater in there and I hope I can get that pen of birds interested in drinking from it. I haven't removed the rubber pan they've been drinking from yet. I need it to put feed in for moving birds into breeding pens. I want to make sure they figure out how to use the water cups and triggers.
We've still got tons of snow on the ground. I was surprised more of it didn't melt yesterday. Today I can see the wind is blowing like crazy so hopefully that will melt the snow and maybe dry up some of the mud.
After working all day, DH decided he wanted to go to Emporia to get some frozen meals to take to work. I needed dog food and some more vinegar and went with him. It's very hard for me to even think about going anywhere after a days work. I was going to buy some chopped alfalfa but Bluestem said they don't carry it.
OkieQueenBee where is it that you got that stuff? I wanted to give some to the geese and peafowl.
I've got to go to Garnett today to pick up some eggs to hatch. Just adding to my breeding stock... I hope.

My RP tom is eating!!! Yesterday he came up to me when I had a bowl of eggs (eggs that had been frozen so I had broken them into a bowl to give the chickens). He seemed very interested so I tried to make sure he got a decent serving of the eggs in spite of the competition. About then is when I saw the lamb and went to check her out.

Today I tried to take an egg to him but he couldn't get near the bowl due to the crowd so he only got a couple of nibbles. When I read the info about cayenne pepper, metronidazole etc., another person who had the same issue with her turkey hen, said even after the symptoms subsided, it took a long time before her hen started eating grain again. So I was really pleased when my tom followed me into the feed room this evening. While filling the feeder, I offered him grain out of the scoop and he ate quite a bit of it.

As of tonight, he has completed 6 full days of meds and since he is now eating grain again, I feel very optimistic that he will make a full recovery.

Yay! So gald your RP tom is on the mend and doing so well.

Trish - Sending you lots of luck on your MRI results. Nothing like having to start all over when you think you are almost over the hump. I'm glad you are walking better. If you are up in Wichita, stop by a sporting good store to pick up a pair of the yaktrak. They should give you the much needed traction on the slick ground.

Well I just got back a bit ago from my appt. with the Ortho Dr. & I don't need knee surgery, yay! He says I just wrenched my knee really bad when I fell & it may take some time to feel better. I got to keep the disk from my MRI so we brought it home & looked at my fracture. You can see it really good on the MRI. The nurse was laughing because she said the radiologist called them telling them I had a fracture of the fibula & she said yeah we knew that. They thought they were telling them something new I guess. The Dr. says I have another 6 weeks of healing to do yet, to just keep doing my exercises to strengthen the leg. I will see him again the end of March & have an x-ray to make sure the bone has healed. I'm so relieved though I don't have to have surgery again & start over on recovering, whew! Yeah I do need to get some of those Yaktrax for sure, I'm really scared of falling now after breaking a bone for the first time in my life.

I have chicks popping out like little popcorn today, I had two more by the time I got back from my appt. I have 13 more eggs to hatch yet & I saw that 3 of those were starting to pip. I just looked at my records & the RIR chicks are 5 weeks old today, not quite as old as I was hoping they were. I really need to move them so I can split up these chicks in the house, the one brooder is getting kind of crowded now with the new chicks hatching & the others getting bigger. I may have to rig something for these bigger RIR chicks.

It's really nice outside here today, 55 degrees & sunny, I'm so glad to see that warmer weather & the darned snow if finally melting. There is still snow in the yard & down by my pens, so I'm still kind of reluctant to go down there yet. It wouldn't be a good thing to slip & fall again before my leg is healed.

I hope you all are having a good Valentine's Day! My DH just came home with red roses & a really nice card for me.

I just got up to pick up a screaming Little One and happened to look out the window. I saw a shadow through the tree line that caused me to set the Little One down, put my boots on and run outside, grabbing my camera on the way out the door. Needless to say, my birds are locked up and will be for a while.

wow... Lizzy, that's a really scraggly looking coyote. Looks hungry.

Trish~ congrats on the new grandson, and good news on your knee. Nice to think you might be over the worst of it.

Nasty mangy coyote, Lizzy! Yeah someone needs to shoot him to put him out of his misery.
Trish that's such good news your knee is okay!
You guys have it made. It is only up to 34 here with a strong north wind. So much for the warm weather!!!! There was a cold front that moved in in early morning and just ruined the whole mess. That's so irritating because I was looking forward to warmer weather. It just feels extra cold after having 40 with not much wind yesterday.
I drove over to get some eggs and just got back home. I decided to treat them with Tektrol and I'm glad I did. I found one that was no good and one that was cracked. I'm glad he threw in a couple extras so I didn't actually loose anything. I hope I have a good hatch from the rest. It would be nice to have a good breeding group before fall. Wow! talking about fall already and it's not even close to spring yet!
My plans for today were to move some birds around but since the forecast was so wrong I don't think I'll do much but feed and water them.

Yes, he does look hungry. After I scared him away, I immediately went and locked my birds up. I think I'll leave them locked up at least for the rest of the day, maybe for a few days. I don't want that coyote (or any other for that matter) thinking that they can get an easy meal here.

Yep, that's what I was thinking too.
