Consolidated Kansas

Wow, I think OQB has a good idea, sounds like there's more than just a few of us need to be on the mend. Tweety- hope you are doing better whew, sounded scary . Danz - the "crud" is really going around right now and it seems to hang on forever.
I saw some cute rooster behavior today. We have two roos in the main coop and run one big Brahma ,who pretty much can have any of the girls he wants and then a cute little EE roo and he only has one hen. Today while the little EE's hen was in laying her egg he was adding pieces of straw to the nest box ,as if he were trying to encourage her to go broody. She is his only chance to be a papa, I thought it was pretty cute. -side note- I got an even dozen eggs yesterday , that was a first yay !

OQB, sorry I didn't get to see you at Yoder, I met the lady with the peahens & it was really early. I just didn't want to stand around another 2 1/2 hours till the auction started & I thought I should just get those girls home & into their pen before dark. It's an hour & a half drive each way there & back for me. I'm glad you got rid of so many roosters, it makes me wish I had brought mine, but it was kind of cold out there to bring chicks. I'm sorry you're having problems with sick & injured birds, I think they all will feel better when this darned winter is over, it's just been the pits. I hope we don't have another one like this for a very long time. It's been the worst one in awhile.

Danz I hope you feel better soon & everyone else who is sick.

Everyone hang in there, the next two days aren't going to be pretty. I can't wait for this to be over with & it to get warmer again. I'm with you tweety, I hope this is truly our last blast for this year, ugh I hate this stuff. I did find a pair of those Yaktrax for about a third the normal price on clearance so even if I don't use them this year I will have them for next winter. I haven't tried them out yet, I doubt that I step outside tomorrow at all, it's not worth the risk.

My breeder birds have been laying fairly well lately, but my laying flock is taking another break, I just think it's this stupid weather.

111 posts behind! We were out of town for a few days. My cousin and his family (from California) were in Lawrence so their younger daughter could audition for a music scholarship at KU. The whole Kansas part of the family (9 of us) met them in Lawrence and spent a few days with them. It was fun because we only see them every few years, but I sure missed my dogs and worried about the chickens and my back didn't like the hotel bed .... I'm hopelessly old! My FIL always looks after the chickens when we're gone. He even got two eggs a day, which is twice as many as we were getting when we were home.

I hope everyone's doing well. Tweety, what a frightening experience. I'm so glad you were right there where the doctor could take care of things right away.

I'm not happy about this cold snap. I've been looking at seed catalogs and I'm anxious for gardening weather.

Glad to see you back. I miss your input. It's just been way too quiet here lately. I can imagine knowing what I do of you and thinking of some of our like qualities that you were elated to get back home to the peace and quiet and your animals. I'm glad you did enjoy the trip regardless. I can't imagine being gone a few days.

OQB, the more birds you have the more you deal with sickness and injury. I am sure it sounds like myself for instance has lots of birds with this and that that goes wrong. But it is sheer numbers that make it seem that way. If you have 12 birds you may rarely have anything go wrong. But when that number goes up to several hundred more and more things occur. I like to think that my birds get really good care especially considering all the work it entails.... and that overcrowding is not a problem .....except sometimes in chicks and juveniles. But simply when the numbers go up so do instances of things that some people will never see. Also a cross section of species creates it's own set of problems. But I can't imagine not having all the eye candy here.

We got ice and sleet but no snow yet. The ground is white but it's sleet on ice. I'm really dreading getting out today but I absolutely have to. I think tonight is going to be the worst temperature wise. I'll just have to make a point to make sure there is plenty of water in the heated bowls and plenty of feed in the feeders. DH had gone shopping late yesterday and didn't go as far as he intended. The roads were too trecherous. When he backs out on roads you know they are bad.
I can hear that wind roaring out there. Not a good thing. I saw that several of the area churches were closed today. I found that strange. I rarely remember hearing of church closings due to weather.

I think that's true Danz about the fact that the more birds you have the more incidence of sickness occurs. You just have more of a chance of it with higher numbers. You know how the chicken math goes though, you start out with a few chickens & then all of the sudden you have a whole farm full of them. You think oh I just have to have some of those & those, oh & some of those & there you are.

We didn't get that much snow yet, there is enough to make the ground white & make a mess of things. However we're supposed to get more sleet & snow up to 5 inches today & tonight. The storm warming isn't over till midnight tonight. I'm worried about my birds in these kind of temps, I sure hope they all make it through. If they can hang on till Tues. it's supposed to start warming up above freezing again.

It's been snowing some here this morning but not really heavy. We were getting freezing rain mid morning. Can't seem to decide what it's going to do other than make a treacherous slick mess. I haven't gone out yet. I've been busying myself with little projects. I need to get a move on soon. Just dreading going out!!!
Birds are like kids. If you have one kid you only have a few illnesses creep up, but if you take the whole school look at how many potential sicknesses and medical problems that can come up.

Wow, I was so far behind. I did read everything so, but I won't remember names. :(

Congrats on all the hatching going on.

Yikes on the dental problems, people sick, and the emergency hospital visit! I am so glad everyone is doing better.

Skunks....eeek! I am so glad mine haven't run across any!

I wanted to go to the Yoder Auction but I had plans. Maybe this month.

Heather love the sheep, I had to look up the Romonov's, I have them in another browser window to read about. My family is German via Russia, so Russian anything intrigues me.

I started my incubator about a week and a half ago. Just some mixes, but I decided I did not want to buy EE's this year and this was a cheap way to get some and get my incubator warmed up for the English Orp eggs. I have my Jubilee roo for the Aloha project, he is the first that I have had since roaming dogs killed most of my flock and all of my Orps about 4 years ago. It has taken me that long. My love are the blacks, but I am not sure what all I will be getting. Soon it will be time to start hatching Aloha chicks...

I am so glad that I ordered Silkie chicks from Ideal about a month ago. They had them for $1.30 each. And they are doing really great! I know, hatchery....but since they are for my fun-sized bantam mixes they will work perfectly. I currently have in that flock a Mille Fleur Cochin rooster, a buff Silkie and 4 Frizzles. I would love to get a couple Showgirls or bantam Polish just for fun. I have thought about trying to find a nice quality Silkie rooster to add.

The week before Easter I have some Leghorns coming. I just want some white eggs to add to my basket.

Am I the only one that is surprised that it is March already? It doesn't feel like it.

It is so yucky outside.....

How does that old saying go? Is it-- If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb?

So what color of English Orps are you getting taz? I just love the look of those big fluffy butts! I just got jubilee eggs & put them in the incubator, I'm super excited about those & then later on have partridge chicks coming. You'll have to update us on how your Aloha project is going later. I really like my brown leghorns for white eggs & I just got a couple of Exchequer pullets from HEChicken awhile back that are now laying as well. They lay the biggest white eggs for such small birds. I also have a couple of California Whites that lay great too.

How does that old saying go? Is it-- If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb?

Boy do I hope that's true Ralph, we need SPRING bad!

Trish,

I honestly don't know what I will be getting. Given all the colors she has, if I had to choose just one I would go with black. They are my favorite.

Ok, I have had my Taz avatar for years and years. Today, someone sent me a private message suggesting that I change it, so that I don't get sued. So I went looking for Avatar laws and such, and all sorts of "Free Avatar" sites popped up, lots with Looney Toons.

Here is the Quote:
At what point is it silly? I am not claiming it is my picture, or that I created it, or selling anything with it, or saying they endorse me, or anything...so frustrating. Heck, the name Taz is probably copyrighted so I could be sued for my whole profile! UGH!!!!! Getting off my soapbox.
