Consolidated Kansas

Ok, I have had my Taz avatar for years and years. Today, someone sent me a private message suggesting that I change it, so that I don't get sued. So I went looking for Avatar laws and such, and all sorts of "Free Avatar" sites popped up, lots with Looney Toons.

At what point is it silly? I am not claiming it is my picture, or that I created it, or selling anything with it, or saying they endorse me, or anything...so frustrating. Heck, the name Taz is probably copyrighted so I could be sued for my whole profile! UGH!!!!! Getting off my soapbox.

Oh for heavens sake that would mean anybody that uses anything close to any kind of cartoon character would be in trouble. Have you seen how many tweety somethings there are on BYC? That is part of the tweety bird theme. I think that's going too far with things. You didn't claim you drew it or it's yours exclusively. I'm with you, I think the person that sent that was being silly. I see so many cartoon things used on the internet & really are they going to sue everybody.

I saw some cute rooster behavior today. We have two roos in the main coop and run one big Brahma ,who pretty much can have any of the girls he wants and then a cute little EE roo and he only has one hen. Today while the little EE's hen was in laying her egg he was adding pieces of straw to the nest box ,as if he were trying to encourage her to go broody. She is his only chance to be a papa, I thought it was pretty cute.

How sweet. I miss my roo.

Glad to see you back. I miss your input. It's just been way too quiet here lately. I can imagine knowing what I do of you and thinking of some of our like qualities that you were elated to get back home to the peace and quiet and your animals. I'm glad you did enjoy the trip regardless. I can't imagine being gone a few days.

Thanks! Yeah, I was happy to get home to my critters. DH doesn't understand (actually, no one in my family understands), but I just don't feel any great desire to do a lot of traveling. When I do, I'm still always glad to come home. I don't get cabin fever like they do, where they just feel cooped up because they haven't gone out of town for a while.

I feel horrible leaving the dogs at a kennel when we're gone. We just don't know what else to do. When the dogs got along, we felt fine asking the neighbors to feed them and let them outside a few times a day. Now, it's an ordeal that involves putting one in the basement and the other outside, and switching them around. It's more time consuming and if they don't get the basement door latched, it could be a real disaster. I can't bring myself to put someone else in that position. But I feel like the dogs are more traumatized at the kennel. When they were home, they seemed to know we'd be back. Now, I think they think they've been abandoned.

I don't feel so bad about the chickens because I know my FIL will take good care of them. I miss seeing them, but at least I know they're fine.

I don't know. I know copyright law is serious, but I can't imagine being sued over an avatar. I would think, on the very off chance someone from Looney Toons sees your avatar, they would just inform you of the copyright and ask you to stop using it before they went to the trouble and expense of suing you.

We got a tiny bit of ice followed by 6-8" of snow. It actually felt good to get out and do a little shoveling. That wore off long before we were done

but we did my parents' and my in-laws' driveways, so it was a little more than usual.

Its really snowing here I just kept everyone locked up in tbe barn and went out and put back in heat lamps the other day in prep for weather speaking of does any one have suggestions on keeping eggs from freezing till you get to them? What I brought in today didnt freeze but I was worried they would mine use an old out of service freezer case no doors as a nest box ive divided it into 3 sections but they use only the end box. Sorry to hear others also have the current plauge stay warm and eat lots of chicken soup!

Wow, I was so far behind. I did read everything so, but I won't remember names. :(

Congrats on all the hatching going on.

Yikes on the dental problems, people sick, and the emergency hospital visit! I am so glad everyone is doing better.

Skunks....eeek! I am so glad mine haven't run across any!

I wanted to go to the Yoder Auction but I had plans. Maybe this month.

Heather love the sheep, I had to look up the Romonov's, I have them in another browser window to read about. My family is German via Russia, so Russian anything intrigues me.

I started my incubator about a week and a half ago. Just some mixes, but I decided I did not want to buy EE's this year and this was a cheap way to get some and get my incubator warmed up for the English Orp eggs. I have my Jubilee roo for the Aloha project, he is the first that I have had since roaming dogs killed most of my flock and all of my Orps about 4 years ago. It has taken me that long. My love are the blacks, but I am not sure what all I will be getting. Soon it will be time to start hatching Aloha chicks...

I am so glad that I ordered Silkie chicks from Ideal about a month ago. They had them for $1.30 each. And they are doing really great! I know, hatchery....but since they are for my fun-sized bantam mixes they will work perfectly. I currently have in that flock a Mille Fleur Cochin rooster, a buff Silkie and 4 Frizzles. I would love to get a couple Showgirls or bantam Polish just for fun. I have thought about trying to find a nice quality Silkie rooster to add.
It's okay to have hatchery chicks. I think myself included we talk too much about breeding our expensive birds but that doesn't mean that hatchery chicks are a bad thing. If you want good egg production and you aren't raising them for show who cares? My egg layer flock is comprised of hatchery birds or culls. It's what makes you happy and what you enjoy.
Taz that is not totally true. About your avatar. You can't use a copyrighted picture or one that has something like tm on it, a licensed picture, one that has the statement that they can't be used etc, says proof, or has someone else's name on it. It's not correct to use other people's pictures but it can still be done without legal ramifications. In the case of Taz I would guess that would be a protected image since it's a licensed product. You can safely go on a search for free images or free gifs and get all the pictures you want. Or for that matter if you go to a website that charges for use of their images you can pay a couple $$ and use the image as you want. A lot of people photoshop their photos by putting a title on them or the name of their business so they can't be used by others. I did a quick search using the parameters Free Taz images. There are several out there that can be used.
How does that old saying go? Is it-- If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb?

How I wish that were true. I do remember saying after the fact comes in like a lion and goes out like one. Spring is just a couple of weeks away. Lets focus on that! Maybe positive thinking will help.

Yesterday was a full day and I never got back on here. I guess because of the weather everyone decided to spend time of the phone. I had one phone call after another yesterday afternoon into evening. I really didn't mind for a change but my ear got sore!!

I got all bundled up and got the birds fed and watered. I was done with the watering and DH came out and asked if I was done. I told him that I still had to feed. So he loaded feed on a sled and did over half of the feeding. It really helped cause by that point I was pretty darned cold. I was hoping to get by easy today but I see the starlings are all over out there which means they will have all the water dirty. I hate those things!! They can squeeze right through the chicken wire so I can't keep them out. The last cold snap I tried moving the water inside the houses and that just caused the starlings to go inside which was even worse.
I lost one hen yesterday. I thought she was eggbound. So I went through the normal stuff of soaking etc. She died so I did a necropsy on her. The only thing I found was a ton of roundworms. This just drives me nuts. I don't think anyone worms their birds more than I do. How in the world she could manage to still have that many worms I have no idea. She is one that has been free ranging most of the time. I normally let the layers just go where they want. So maybe she avoided treated water. I hate to worm the birds when they are confined due to the cold like they are right now but I guess I'd better run them through another worming while they are all penned up. The strange thing was she still had lots of fat on her regardless of the worms. Kind of left me baffled. But anyway she cooked up nicely so the dogs will eat well today.
We got more snow yesterday afternoon but from what I heard no one got nearly as much as predicted. I just wish we hadn't got all that ice.

I think we got about 3 inches or so, I'm not sure, we were supposed to get 5, but I'm pretty sure we didn't get that much. We didn't get all of the ice you got up there Danz, thank goodness. Just be careful out there. I don't blame you, I hated those darned starlings when I lived outside of Derby, we had them every year. We haven't had them here & I'm so thankful for that. We have other birds that can be a nuisance though, crows & red winged blackbirds. The blackbirds are really noisy, they nest in our lagoon area & the noise level can get pretty bad at times from there.

I had a lot of contacts last night about chicks while we were watching the Oscars, I think people were snowed in & were bored & started chick shopping. I know some of the farm stores have chicks now, but the ones I saw didn't have much to offer. The COOP in Ark City lets people order chicks every year, they make a couple of big huge orders & have people pick them up there. Hatchery chicks are OK if you just need layers & aren't showing or breeding. I have gotten hatchery chicks for my laying flock up to this year. I just decided this year I wasn't going to. I know enough people now who raise chicks or I can order hatching eggs & get what I want. I think I'm done getting eggs for this year though, I say that but we'll see.

I sure hope all of my birds are OK out there with how cold it got, I'm not going to go out there & check. My DH hasn't done the chores yet today, he should be back any time to go do that. I'm sure the eggs are all frozen solid today.

taz, I'm sure there is an avatar you can use that is free & not copyrighted.

Dana hoping your feeling better
Dh is home from hospital he has cellulitis of the foot and he started to break out in blisters up his leg so they admitted him thinking mrsa but test came back neg. So he's on the mend. His tremous in his left hand in foot are getting worse. He's not able to hold very much in that hand.
He off sterile now and losing weight I'm not sure what's next for us. He has an MRI on the 11 pray that its good news.

I'm wanting to add some more hens to my flock but not sure what. I hate how cold it is. Please bring spring soon

Whew - I hadn't been on in two weeks. There's no way I'll get caught up. I skimmed the last 5 pages or so to ensure I'm not asking something that was recently talked about.

Danz - are you selling at the Gardner HOGBA auction? I don't want to go and take the fam if it's super cold, but it was a fun outing last time. My crew enjoyed seeing all the birds and one of mines till talks about the rooster that scared her. Of course, the other one talks about how sad she was to see those pretty chickens in such little cages, so we have to explain how it was just for a day or so and then they would be going to nice big new homes.

Some neighbors nearby have started juicing and are giving us their scraps. Sometimes the birds eat everything, other times they don't hardly tough the scraps. At first I thought they didn't like carrot, but I think I've seen them eat it. Any suggestions on how to make veggie scraps more appealing? I'm just now thinking I could mix some scratch grains in.
