Consolidated Kansas

I Just looked. The ones I have are Yaktrax. DH just ordered some other brand for himself but I don't know what they are. I think he took them to work with him.
I was glad to see my sussex roo is still alive today but still not looking any better. He is such a good rooster. The girls were digging around in a dry spot and he was trying to stand there watching over them when he looks like he just really wants to sleep. I'm debating whether to hang a light in the coop to keep him warm. I had put a light on my pheasant and thought I would just use it but the girls are still staying under it. I located a cock in Oklahoma so I sure don't want to let the girls get sick.
I had a surprise that I can't decide is pleasant or another heartbreak. I found a nest of 9 Sabastopol goose eggs. I had checked just a few days ago and there were none in that shelter. But I'm afraid they are all frozen. No one was sitting on them. I didn't see any cracks yet but that can happen when the thaw. At any rate I fired up the second GQF incubator. I've got to be ready to hatch these at least when they do have eggs that aren't frozen. The goose and peafowl eggs take a ton of room to incubate.
I have a bunch of eggs I need to get set but not sure how many will be fertile with all this cold and freezing.
I have more chicks due to hatch on the 6th. I guess I should start planning for a place to brood them.

Oh man... my multis quit on me again... can't believe it. I think there is something wrong with my browser because when I googled something, it opened up like 20+ browser windows but no results. Argh... aggravating to say the least.

I think everyone is pretty much over this cold weather. Even I can't stand it any longer. I WANT SPRING HERE NOW!

OQB is right that lots of our birds problems are because of this cold weather. Thankfully my birds are doing OK. But then again I haven't had a chance to go out there to take a look at them much since I got back from the hospital. I think my immune system took a hit and now I have a stomach virus. When it rains, it sure pours. Haven't been able to eat much for the last 2 days. I'm on a liquid diet just so I'm not dehydrated.

Danz... saw that your peafowl eggs were frozen and cracked! That's just horrible. Those precious eggs... And the sick birds.... you just never had a break... I hope your birds will recover. The rooster sounds like a sweet heart though, still standing guard even though he doesn't feel well. I would love to have a few sebbies around here... maybe later in the Spring.

OQB... how about your bird? That bloody egg looked bad to my untrained eye... hope she recovers soon.

Sharol... I used to have a pair of yaktrak or whatever the brand was but lost it during the move. I really need another pair so I can slide over to the coop and back to the house unharmed. The Due North one in your link looks good. I think my head cover thingie was by Due North as well.

Trish... Glad your yaktrak works. Definitely be careful. The ice is deceiving and dangerous. I have to be careful now since I can't afford to fall and break sutures. This up and down weather is killing me. Mother nature sure hasn't made up her mind about Winter or Spring yet. C'mon Spring...

Taz... miss your Taz pic... I have no idea you could get sued by just using a picture. Guess I better change my tweetybird picture on my work computer... just in case.

Michelle... sending you lots of hugs and positive vibes on your husband's scan. Praying for positive news and hang in there... You are one strong woman!

Lizzy... 63F? That sounds wonderful. I hear ya on the birds flocking out with their wings stretched. Sounded like they enjoyed the day! Mine have always ran out of the coop like they haven't seen daylight for months... silly birds...

I tried out my new Yaktrax today out in the snow & I felt like they really helped me get more traction. I don't know how well they would do on sheer ice because they seemed to slip on the slick floor inside. I'm wondering if they would help in mud too, I guess I'll find out after the snow melts.

I have some from QVC, I think they're Weathertrax or something like that. I really like them. DH told me I didn't need them when we were out shoveling snow, but I wore them anyway. I was glad, because it was slick in places and I'm not all that coordinated. My feet didn't slip once, but I wasn't on pure ice anywhere, either.

Awwww. I sure hope he makes it. If you have a light available for him, it probably wouldn't hurt to use it.

My chickens finally ventured outside a couple of times yesterday. They didn't stay out long, but at least they got out for a bit.

We posted at the same time! I hope you're feeling good and your recovery is quick.

My birds all rush out of the coop the same way, as if they might never have another chance to get out. It's fun to watch.

Michelle, I'll keep my fingers crossed that your husband's scan is good.

Cherwill... my husband is not a very observant man but he made a comment a few days ago (when the high temp for the day was like 9F) that not 1 single chicken was out of their coop. Everyone decided to just stay inside for that day. I'm glad everyday goes by, it is 1 day closer to Spring. LOL... and this is from someone (me) who loves it cold.

Well unfortunately my rooster didn't make it. I went out to check on him one more time before dark. The girls had gone to the coop but he was laying outside in the mud. I rushed him in, gave him another shot, set up a cage with a heat pad under it but he died a few moments later. I had to cry. Not because he was a special pet particularly but because I spent nearly a year getting him to size and getting him started breeding. My tears were for myself I guess. He was the most gorgeous speckled sussex I had ever seen. And you just can't seem to find anything but hatchery type speckled sussex any more. I've checked every where, with every member of the American sussex society and no one has any. I guess I can hope I can find one at Gardner although I don't think I've ever seen any show quality speckles there. The people I got eggs from for him sold their sussex so there's no chance of getting more.
If I have any eggs hatch I can't be sure they are his offspring cause they girls weren't with him that long. But I'll just keep all those chicks and monitor how they grow up. I have a waiting list for sussex but I guess they can wait a while longer.
I was going to go get feed today but the mill at the co-op is down for maintenance today. That means I am going to have to scrounge for feed today. I have some ordered for the early tomorrow.
I need to get in gear. I've got to get those eggs ready to set then get out and care for the birdies.

Well my sebbie eggs were a bust. I had 9 of them that cracked open. I had three that weren't. That doesn't mean they'll be okay though. I found another one while ago but it was really cold. I'm not sure if I missed it or they laid it really early. I also found two more peafowl eggs, this time in the purple peafowl pen. One was broken and the other one cold. Of course unless it cracks I'll be incubating the cold one.
This weather is killing me! That's a lot of profit down the tubes.

Danz, I'm so sorry about all the fowl (foul?) problems lately. It always seems like bad things come in groups, so maybe they are done!!

Those little marans pullets that came from your eggs are a trip. Last night I took out a plate of treats for them about dark (they had already gone into the coop and I was running late. I was standing in the middle of the coop and Lacey (the one with the laced feathers) flew over onto my arm and started helping herself to the food. She has been standoffish (broody raised), so I was really surprised. Those four pullets (the two pure Marans and the two crosses) have been laying 3 eggs a day minimum since they started laying. The four of them are accounting for more than half of the egg production from my 12 layers. Very impressive.
