Hi, new people ! Welcome to the thread.

I have a couple of ?'s with pics. First, we were wondering if the color of this roo has a name ? Is he a "blue birchen duckwing " or what do you call it ? He's just a farm store EE but were curious .

Also, I asked a couple days ago about putting something on our gooses neck and Danz I think rightfully discouraged me from putting a sock on her neck for protection. I just wanted to check and make sure you guys think its ok or should I be doing something to help her out ? So far it's mostly feathers , but some of the skin does seem a little roughed up.

As long as the skin isn't broken she will be fine. Most of my geese wind up with bald heads and necks by the end of mating season. Geese can be pretty rough this time of year. They will molt and it will grow back soon enough. It is pretty typical. Do they have a pool? On nice days it helps to have even a small pool, they seem to be less violent mating in the water than on dry land....not really sure why!!!

Please help., we have a turkey hen that has an injury under her wing and is limping on the same side., she will not allow us to come near her and we know that she is hurting and we do not want to stress her out anymore., does anyone have any suggestions...

Well it hasn't been a good day here at all. I was out watering birds when the fire department drove into my driveway telling me we were surrounded by fire. They asked if there was access to our property from that side & I told them no they had to go around to the other road to get to the other side. My DH walked down & watched the fire & he climbed the hill so he could see better. It barely missed a really nice house across the road & was headed right for a trailer over there. I have a good friend right across the road from that & I had to call her at work & see if anyone was home, she sent her hubby home to watch over it. I had to go tell the two neighbors next to me about the fire, the fire dept. didn't tell them, only me. They sent out several tanker trucks & they're still out there watching it making sure it doesn't flare up again. Man if it had come this way our place would have gone up like match sticks there is so much dead grass & dead wood out there on that 5 acres. Thank goodness nobody lost a home & nobody got hurt. I could see the horses walking around up there where it has burned, but it looked like they were OK. The people in the trailer it got closest to had one person in a wheelchair & his kids came to help him in case they had to evacuate. Gosh I wish people would be more careful burning when it's so dry. That was a little closer than I would rather have fire.

Right after we got back from watching the fire to make sure it was getting put out & talking to the people in the trailer our 13 year old cat that has been ill died & we just got done burying her. Nope it's not been a good day at all.

Oh dear! I am sorry for your bad day, but oh so very thankful no one was hurt in the fire. They are popping up all over the place! Many are folks burning pasture and it either gets out of hand or embers reignite, and these strong winds just get things going strong!
If we have no more fires calls this season I will be thrilled! I think I am still recovering from that last one! This old chickie is not as young as she once was!

There have been many beloved animals pass lately, all in the last few weeks. Do you suppose it is this weather? I know folks who have lost cats, dogs, goats, & cattle. The timing just seems a little odd to me. Creepy.

Turkeys will try to flap you to death when you catch them. The best way to do it is wait until dark when she is settled for the night. Try to grab by where her wings attach to get hold then once in control wrap your arms around her. To treat her lay her on her side wrapped in a big towel or a blanket to help restrain her and talk calmly to her. Do you have any idea what is wrong with her?

I'm so glad you stopped in. My geese have their little tub of water and I never even thought about that helping with injuries. Mine are just loosing feathers. It's bad enough someone asked me yesterday if those were the curly geese or their feathers were just falling out. But none of them ever get that bare.

It's bad enough someone asked me yesterday if those were the curly geese or their feathers were just falling out. But none of them ever get that bare.

Yeah, it seems like dry ground mating is just disastrous! They are such clumsy fools on land. I have one gander that every year plucks his breast bald, and I mean BALD while his girl is setting. It is bizarre. There is nothing wrong with him to explain it, I don't know if he thinks he is helping feather the nest??!!!???

Sorry I have to laugh. I was just thinking about how clumsy these guys are and how they'll trip over and fall all the time. They do head tumbles out of the water tub sometimes too. Sure would be wonderful to be able to build them a nice pond that was in an enclosed area. My geese are looking really ragged right now. Hard to believe how gorgeous they were a month ago. I set another 22 eggs today from them. I also tossed probably 9 or 10 of the first ones they laid when it was so cold but still have some developing. I think the first ones due to hatch are due the 2nd. Then several more on the 6th. I don't have a clue where I'm going to put them when they do hatch!! I wish I could just spend my time playing with them all.

People can be real idiots. Our local fire departments are exhausted fighting fires that people started to burn prairie on days when it was WAY too windy.

I'm so sorry about your cat. We do get attached to our pets.

She has an almond size break in her skin that is only visible when she lifts her wing and is missing feathers in the same area., not sure how it happened...
