Consolidated Kansas

I'm way behind. I was going to try to read everything carefully and respond, but I ended up skimming.

It's late and I need to go to bed, but I don't want to put off checking in because I might not get back for a couple of days. It seems like my computer is off a lot lately because of the thunderstorms. McPherson is definitely not going to return to drought conditions this summer!

I haven't been able to get in the garden to hoe for a couple of days, so I'm sure it's out of hand again. We try to keep up, but the rain is making it impossible. We got a small harvest of beans a few days ago, and I'm sure there's more out there. There's also more rain in the forecast, so it will probably be another few days at least. Grrr.
I went out and did a little work in my garden a couple days ago but ended up covered in mud. I have lots of weeds that need pulled but it can wait for it to get a little cooler and less humid. I had all kinds of bugs move in too. Wish I could encourage the ducks and guineas to go bug shopping for me.
sorry for those of you who've lost birds in all the mud. I guess the good part about not being able to get any more chicks is that all my birds are big enough to handle most amounts of rain and mud.

Danz, I know what you mean about people posting things. I have the same problem with emails, too. I try to check out most things on some kind of fact-checking site like Snopes or by doing my own research. Sadly, you can never take anything for truth without checking it out yourself, and that includes official research you see touted by experts and doctors!
I am very much into facts and knowledge, and people don't realize that the things they say that aren't true can cause much more harm than good.
Glad you checked in!

Well I live just outside of Waverly and have 5 rooster and 18 hens (I think) They are 3 mo old they are free rangers and are funny as heck to watch.

Just a Kansas chicken fan checking in. Hi all

Welcome to our thread! Aren't chickens entertaining? I had some ladies come yesterday to buy chicks from me & they stood for quite some time just watching my laying flock digging around in my flower bed. They said they could stand & watch them all day long. I get a kick out of watching them myself. Feel free to jump in the conversation any time & post pictures, we love looking at them. We talk about a little of everything here & not all about chickens.

Well my duck didn't return yesterday, so I hope she is sitting on a nest somewhere rather than being coyote or fox food. I sure don't need any more ducks, but if she hatches them out I guess I can sell them or we can have more duck in the freezer.

This humidity lately from all of this rain is killing me, that's harder than anything I think. I go outside for only a few minutes & come in soaking wet.

Can pullets have iridescent feathers all over? Comb still small. Small legs. Roundish feathers around the neck. Blue and green irridescence literally all over the body. Fingers crossed. (S)he is lovely.

Yes they can. It depends on the coloring, particularly if they have black feathering.
I had a very busy day yesterday. It seems I end up working harder all the time. I got my Mandarin pond drained, cleaned, and refilled. With this heat and all those birds it gets way too nasty too soon. Of course the normal feeding and watering which is probably a mess since it rained again quite a bit during the night. We really did kind of need a little more rain. It had been so humid but the last couple storms missed us.
I put shade cloth over several pens. I ordered 150 foot roll and used most of it. Hopefully it will help keep some of these birds a little cooler.
Yesterday was hatch day here. I had broody that was sitting on her third batch of eggs. I had given her these eggs that another broody had sat on for 4-5 days prior. She hatched 6 out of 6. She has been sitting in my flower bed for a couple months regardless of weather. I looked and she is still out there. I hope the chicks were okay in the storm. I also had one of my partridge brahma hens hatch two chicks yesterday as well. I have one more brahma hen that should hatch some before too long. And another broody girl that has eggs I gave her to sit on. I don't even remember for sure what breed the eggs were but they were valuable birds. She was sitting so well I decided to let her have a go at it. I am really tempted to give these girls a few more to raise to see how they do. I am so tired of taking care of chicks. I guess though I should see what kind of mothers they are first.

I worked the Common Threads Quilt Show Thursday through Saturday at Century II. I guess I've become soft since I closed my shop in just one year, because I slept all day yesterday. I was exhausted from three days of light work and travel. But I sure enjoyed being there, and saw a ton of friends and associates while I was there.

I know what you mean. We spend a day out in the sun and humidity mowing and gardening, and DH & I are both toast for the rest of the day. Since I've had the degenerated disk in my lower back, my stamina has really decreased. We just have to keep plugging away at it and make sure we have sufficient recovery time!

Welcome! Chickens ARE a lot of fun to watch. They're almost always busy. We'd love to see some pictures if you get a chance.

I hope your duck is OK. My niece had a funny story about one of her Chinese Crested ducks. She went to put them in their shelter and noticed something dark on Stan's crest. As she got closer to see what it was, his entire crest started glowing. It was a firefly!

The other thing I hate about humidity is how I can't ever get fully dry after a bath.

Co-worker in desperate need of Buff Silkie chicks. Anyone can help ? Tragedy at her coop and 11yr old devastated. Needs asap if someone has any to spare.

I wish I could help; I'm sure someone here can. What a horrible experience.

We picked beans yesterday; the mud wasn't too bad. I was afraid it would get worse because of the rain in the forecast. We didn't get the rain last night; just a lot of lightning and some thunder. I'm off to can some beans now!
