Well I live just outside of Waverly and have 5 rooster and 18 hens (I think) They are 3 mo old they are free rangers and are funny as heck to watch.

sharol, black hens often will have a green sheen in the sun. I have Australorps & one black Ameraucana hen as well that have the green sheen. I sold one of my Australorp hens to a gal that wanted a broody type of hen. I was disgusted with her because she sat in the nest all the time being broody rather than laying & when I sold her she hasn't been broody since, wouldn't you know it.

Chickenrookie I don't raise Silkies, you might check the swaps on FB. I know there have been people wanting Silkies lately, maybe someone will hatch some soon or watch CL as well.

We got more rain about 3:00 in the morning, ugh just what we needed. Just about the time the ground starts getting a bit more solid it rains again. I know I shouldn't complain, but my pens are such a mess out there.

Just wanted to share pics of all our duckies!! They range from 2 months to 1 1/2 months...

We are thinking we need at least one more female! We are pretty sure we have 3 drakes and 4 ducks & we don't want our drakes to over breed our females.

I live south of town closer to Wolf Creek. I usually know people that were here 40 years ago or people who worked at Wolf Creek. I don't go to town much. I lived outside of Waverly in 1970-1972, then moved back near the plant about 6 years ago. About the only thing I go to town for is to pick up things at the post office once in a while or to go to a craft or card class at the library.

Welcome to our thread! Aren't chickens entertaining? I had some ladies come yesterday to buy chicks from me & they stood for quite some time just watching my laying flock digging around in my flower bed. They said they could stand & watch them all day long. I get a kick out of watching them myself. Feel free to jump in the conversation any time & post pictures, we love looking at them. We talk about a little of everything here & not all about chickens.

Well my duck didn't return yesterday, so I hope she is sitting on a nest somewhere rather than being coyote or fox food. I sure don't need any more ducks, but if she hatches them out I guess I can sell them or we can have more duck in the freezer.

This humidity lately from all of this rain is killing me, that's harder than anything I think. I go outside for only a few minutes & come in soaking wet.

Chicken watching is better than watching a fish tank. I love watching them do their thing.

I've gotten quite a bit done around here today. Got a bunch of stuff brought in from the garden.




Got the green beans in the pressure canner




And back out




Got the geese pool emptied, moved to a new spot and refilled

And trimmed back an evil paradise tree that was trying to take over the chicken pen to the point that I couldn't get through the door that leads from the hen house to the pen.

Now this evening after the geese are herded into their stall, I will have plenty of time to write for a while. Which is good because if I don't get the third book out soon, my readers are going to come after me with pitch forks and torches.

Wow you did get quite a lot accomplished today! I didn't know you were a writer. I always wanted to write a book but just never thought I could do it. I love to write though.

I got the 2nd brooder cleaned out today but didn't get it all sanifized yet. I'm using both tektrol & oxine this time to try to kill anything that could be lurking in there. I soaked the feeders & waterers with bleach water too. I did get my poor hen's foot worked on again this evening that has the bad abcess with the bumble foot. Ugh, it's so nasty & smells so bad. I wrapped her foot with Vet wrap but I noticed as soon as I put her back into the run she was picking it trying to get it off. She is a big heavy hen, so I'm sure that's why she is prone to it more than lighter, smaller ones. I sure hope it heals up, I just would hate to lose her, she's so pretty. She's a BLRW & is cream with red lacing. I have another pullet that actually has the blue lacing.

I also worked some on the tractor I'm building to put chicks or ducks & geese in when they're young to let them get some grass & green stuff. I got 3/4 of the wire on & then had to stop to feed, so hopefully tomorrow I can finish that part. Then I have to figure out how I want to do the door on the front. I want to put some wheels & handles on it, but I have to figure that out too. I've never built one of these before.

Well I have two ladies that woke me up this morning singing what sounds like the egg song.. I couldn't find any eggs tho. Nests empty and did a thorough search of the yard etc... Any day now.

I could almost cry, I had 10 tomato plants and pea plants in a fenced off garden area... If you flew u could get in.. But I found one of my Cornish x ( 8lb can't fly) in the garden when I got home from work.... All but one of my tomato plants are still standing. It looks like someone took the law mower to my garden! Not sure how she got in there, but I worked real hard on that garden and fenced it off to ensure its survival from chickens....

Trish you sound like you accomplished a lot yesterday. I was getting my new dryer in and had to move all kinds of stuff including a full freezer to get the old one out and the new one in. I still have a ton of stuff sitting in the hallway to get put up. I just wore out last night and honestly couldn't do any more. Too many days of working too hard in a row. I need to get the brooder houses cleaned out today and shovel off a load of feed we got yesterday. I also need to put up some more temporary pens and get some of these birds moved outside.
I have someone coming to get turkey poults today. That will be a little money but not enough to pay for my feed this week.
I have a new control center and heat coil to install in one of my older incubators. I am converting it to a digitally controlled unit so I have to take one of my other ones apart so I can make sure I get all the wires run right. I gave up on the first digital thermostat I bought. It was supposed to be super accurate and I never could get it to read properly or quit swinging. I may try again at some later time and see if I can get it to work right. I may just make a home made unit to try it out on in my spare time. Yeah like I have all kinds of that.
okjenyp, I opened the gate to my garden trying to encourage the birds to go in there and eat some bugs. Not a single bird has found their way in. I was hoping the ducks or guineas would go in and clean up a little for me. I've often thought about just putting a guinea shelter in there and raising some young ones in the garden. Of course I'd have to change fencing if I expected them to stay there at all.
I did a count yesterday and my broody hen actually hatched out 8 chicks. I originally thought there were six. I've got a couple more girls that should hatch out some chicks within a week.
