BTW how many of you have LGDs? What breeds do you have and what are pros and cons? I'm considering getting one at some point but wanted to know if it was something I should do or just something I Want to do to make myself feel better.
I too have GPs. I have three of them and have sold several litters. Right now I only have one open female and am trying to locate a male to breed her with. I am very particular about what traits are bred into them. My dogs save me thousands and thousands every year. There is nothing better as far as I am concerned. One of my dogs even thinks she can fly. On the few occasions when we had a hawk come down she has jumped in the air to try to get it. They work together as a trio and each have their range they protect but have a certian bark they use when they need help from the other dogs.
Many people don't use them as pets if they are working dogs but I've found that mine work just as hard or harder than anyone else's dogs in spite of the fact that they are somewhat spoiled pets.
I think genetics have a lot to do with how they work. They are amazingly friendly when people come here as long as I am here. But they have an entirely different attitude if I'm not around. They have seen me walking in from the field before and not recognize me and come running, growling and barking like they are going to rip me to shreds...until they see it is me. They also seem really friendly to customers but will place themselves between me and the customers and watch them very carefully. I have no doubt that if someone made an aggressive move to me they would protect me to a fault. Especially my oldest female. She isn't as people friendly as the other two but she is definitely a mamas girl and I am sure would eat anyone who tried to hurt me.

Trish when I had my yard fencing put in I used goat fencing. It was the most secure fencing I could buy and it is worth the additional cost. It does a great job of keeping all the animals in. I am very happy with it. It's also very strong which is pretty important as far as safety is concerned.
Keep me in mind when you get well enough to butcher. I'd like to learn on my 2 obnoxious cockerels.
Sharol, I am sure I could handle butchering now. It's just a matter of weather conditions. Keep a watch on the weather and we can plan for a day that is going to be a little cooler. We are in the last days of trying to close on my parent's house so the next few days I am going to be super busy. After that I hope things will slow down some.

I was gone most of the day and evening yesterday. We went to my DIL's white coat ceremony. I was really dreading sitting through a long ceremony but it was totally awesome. This is the medical students official ceremony where they are given their white coats that they wear while seeing patients. The speeches were made by other doctors who teach in the program and they were excellent. Normally speeches just bore me insane. They were so inspirational. I can see why they are so picky about whom they admit to medical school. The whole program is designed to choose those who are professional and serious about learning.
Tweety I believe your neighbor was probably there. There was one student there from Kechi.
The whole occasion was a dress affair including the audience. The whole thing was based on professionalism. There were a few young ladies who wore trendy short dresses. My DIL said that they got a speech before the ceremony where they were told that there were about 4 young ladies that were improperly dressed to indicate professionalism and that it could be basis for them to be excluded from the program. Once they received their white coats it was evident who looked like a doctor and who didn't. A short dress with 4 inch spike heels and a white doctor's coat looks anything but professional.
A group of family met later for dinner and had a great time together to top off the day. I was so exhausted when I got home.
I haven't been out to check on my birds yet to see if they made it okay through the extreme heat. My DH ran a VERY long extension cord to the buff orpingtons before we left so they had a fan. I know those girls who got over heated before are going to be super susceptible to dying in the heat for a while. I sure hope I didn't loose any more birds. At least the wind was blowing yesterday which I am sure was a total blessing.
I guess I should get moving and go see if the birds are okay.

My daughter is here until Wednesday, so any time after that will work for me.

So it looks like we should both be available around the same time. Let's keep an eye on the weather and plan it for after Wednesday. I will be tied up next weekend for some more family stuff but otherwise it looks good.
I checked on my birds and only lost a couple of young ones that are pretty crowded. I am pleased. I do hope the wind keeps blowing since it's supposed to be really hot again today.

Wow!! Thanks everyone for the info on the GPs!! It really does sound like they'd be a good investment for us wth all our small livestock!! I worry about predator attacks and while we were gone this last weekend to Denver a big coyote came and scoped out my goats etc. My does were scared silly for a day or so afterwards.
Chicken Danz or anyone who knows of a good pup or young adult let me know. I'm not in a big hurry at all but it might not be a bad idea for me to start considering getting something. I've been lucky so far but come fall and winter we usually have more trouble and we usually have a mountain lion come thru here during the fall.

Cherwill, I am growing about a dozen different heirloom tomatoes this year and Cherokee Purple is one of them.  They were my first to ripen and probably the most flavorful tomato I've ever tasted.  I don't care for the big size and irregular shapes but its worth it for the flavor.  Since then we've had two other varieties ripen as well.  They are both smaller and consistently round and quite good - but not as full-on flavor as the Cherokee Purple.

Your garden sounds amazing!!! My tomatoes are being annihilated by grasshoppers. I was hoping my chickens would help out in that area but haven't had much progress yet. I'm hoping to have enough tomatoes to can sauce but I'm a long way from that yet. I am getting lots of Cukes and my pumpkins couldn't be happier. I'll be picking green beans and peppers soon too. Do you plant any heritage sweet corn? I tried Country Gentlemen this year. Guess we'll see if we like it or not.

I have two GP's. The do an excellent job of protecting everything here, but they don't try to keep the  goats in. When the goats get out, they go with them. They will all come running home when I sound the truck or van horn. They go right to the gate for me to let them in. My two dogs are exact opposites. The male is very docile  and easy going and the  female is the more aggressive  and stand -offish She doesn't hurt the poultry but she makes them stay about 6 feet away from her food while she eats. The male will snap at them if they try to get his food, but he usually leaves them some.
He is the only dog I have ever had that actually enjoys fireworks.  There is a small community a little over a mile from here and someone had quite a large display of night fireworks the Forth. Garland, the male GP, was setting  on his haunches out by the road watching the air bursts. When there was a lull between the blasts he would let out a couple of barks. Like he was saying, "more, more". Cherry, the female GP, was laying against the house foundation  and  was not liking it at all!

You're dogs sound truly amazing!! I'd have loved to have seen your male watching fireworks!!! Do they run loose all the time or do you put them in with the goats at night?

I noticed the last couple of days that it seems like my chickens' poop is quite a bit runnier than usual. Could this be from the heat? Do I need to be worried about it? They're all eating well as far as I can see and they're out free ranging near their coop most of the day. They have fresh water available; I'm not sure what else I could/should be doing.
Guess I'm still pretty new at this and I'm not sure what normal and what's not.

IT is because they are drinking a lot of water due to the heat. It will pass. (pun intended)

Mine are doing the same thing, the heat is hard on them too. I've been trying to keep up with the water around here & keep all of the bowls around the yard filled up as well as I can with all of the free ranging birds, dogs, & cats drinking it. It's so darned hot out there today, it's 101.8 here right now, ack. I just finished getting most of my feeding chores done early & will finish the rest later. I thought I was going to die out there. I came in just soaked & flagging. I feel a little better now after a cool shower. My DH had the nerve to go run & walk in this heat, dumb.

I was wetting down some of the spots the chickens like to lay in out there too just to help them cool off a little. They have a favorite bush they like to lay under & I wet it all down & under the rabbit hutches. I gave the rabbits a shower too to help them out. I'll be glad that after Monday we're going to get a reprieve for the week & cool down a little thank goodness. I hope we get a little rain too, we need some now.

Danz, sounds like a great ceremony! I haven't talked to my neighbor lately but if that lady is from Kechi, I bet that's her. I don't quite understand how some people won't dress appropriately for such an important ceremony/milestone and risk being kicked out of the program.

Cherwill, Hawaiian Pineapple is an heirloom tomato. It tasted great! I have also harvested 2 Cherokee Purples this morning. Can't wait to taste them. We also have a bunch of yellow cherry tomatoes which DH loves. I think I'll try to plant some green beans for fall. Maybe some lettuce as well.

It was hot yesterday and the heat stayed today. I'm looking forward to the cooler weather next week. I checked on the birds, they pretty much just stayed in the shade. I made sure they have plenty of fresh clean water.

I think I'll wait till next week to clean the coop. The heat is killing me.

Stay cool everyone!
