Just a quick brag on my kids and their 4-H chickens--

Abbie won GRAND CHAMPION Large Standard Old bird with Blue--a blue cochin
Abbie won RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION Large Standard Old bird with Midge--a barred cochin
Trent won GRAND CHAMPION Bantam with James--an Americana Roo

Also, to not leave out my other daughter (doesn't do chickens)

Mandie won GRAND CHAMPION BREED for Hazel--a Holland Lop
Mandie won RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION for ALL breeds for Hazel

Abbie also has a goat show today that she expects to do quite well in!

I PROMISE pictures WILL come later. I just popped home to make cookies for the pet costume contest for tomorrow (I'm letting the dough chill

right now).

Congrats on the wins! That's pretty exciting for them, good job!

I've been trying to integrate some young guineas in with my adult ones & they're not having it. Those birds are the meanest things when it comes to being with other birds or even their own kind. I guess I'm going to have to leave them in the growout pen till they're adult sized before I can put them in with the others so they can defend themselves. The older ones tried to peck them to death.

We have to go pick up our hay today to stock up for winter for the goats & sheep. I found some only 10 miles away so I consider myself lucky we don't have to go further to get it. It will take a couple of trips to get it all here & then we have to stack it in the horse shed to keep it dry. Then I will have to put up livestock panels to keep the sheep & goats out of it. It's going to be a busy weekend for us.

Congrats!!! That's super exciting!!!!

On a sad note I lost my rooster that wasn't doing too well. :hit I'm very sad!!! He was slow but still alive when my husband checked on him this morning. At noon he was dead. He was a sweet rooster and had fit into my flock almost flawlessly. So now I need a new Silver Laced Wyandotte rooster. If anyone has one or knows of one please PM me.

Welcome to our Kansas thread! Most of us do free range at least some of our flock, I have my laying hens out all day & then shut them in the coop at night. I also have been working on a small chicken tractor to put my chicks in & let them get some bugs & grass. I should have it done in the next few days so I can start using it. I don't free range my pure breeds I raise chicks from because I don't want any of them to mix. I wish I had a way to do that without mixing the breeds, but haven't figured out a way to do it.

Prairie Fleur I'm sorry to hear about your rooster. There seems to be some respiratory stuff going around right now, possibly brought in by wild birds. I have 3 of my young birds in quarantine in my garage in rabbit cages right now that I'm treating. It can come on pretty suddenly & it can be hard to get rid of as well. I'm sending you a PM.

Thanks for the PM Trish! I'm clueless as to what it was that got him. I'm doing preventative measures with all my other birds. So far so good, X fingers! :fl Any idea if it's a virus or a bacteria? I wasn't sure which it might be. I've been trying to boost their immune systems as well as give them plenty of time in the fresh air and sunshine.

I was thinking about raising chicks from hens also. I don't want to cage them, but I don't see any other way for the breeds to not mix, since all of my chickens are free-range. Are the cockerels chicks mostly given away for free?
