Consolidated Kansas

Thanks for the encouragement and support (that's what I love about this forum) everyone! Danz, my story sounds similar to your weeding story. I was trying to clean up limbs from the back yard that perpetually fall out of my walnut tree (hate that tree) and putting them in the front yard to be bundled and put to the curb for yard waste pick up. Apparently some passer-by must have thought I was just building a brush pile in the front yard and called in to complain, I get in trouble for trying to clean up my yard... in what world is that even fair? The permit is only $50, but I get the feeling that it's pointless to apply for it. Not enough people on my side of the issue that it would get any city councilman unelected for opposing. But, you are right, if I don't at least try I'm letting other people dictate what I can and can't do. All for the sake of -oh my gosh, what will this do to real estate values if there be hens in the neighborhood! Wish I was in the position to just pick up and move to the country, but I'm not

.

It seems to me if the permits are available that what you need to do is present your case. Show your coop isn't an eye sore, that your immediate neighbors don't mind the chickens, that they are not dirty or smelly or noisy and that it isn't ruining the neighborhood. There is more and more movement to people having back yard chickens which works in your favor.
I am just so tired of people trying to rule other people's lives. My yard is a mess but it's mostly because there's always a million projects going on. I must admit my DH wasn't quite so bad when we lived in town because the city was always watching. I keep hoping some day to get things organized where things can be kept indoors and worked on instead of having things out in the yard.
It sounds like excuses but there are only so many hours in a day.
Yesterday I really didn't do much. I replaced all the parts on my old clothes dryer so I could sell it. But I have no way to plug it in and test it now. I also took out a defrost timer from an older upright freezer and researched until I found new old stock to replace it. Hopefully it will get here soon and I can get that sold too. I bought a new dryer and a new freezer so I just need to sell these older ones. They both worked but needed tweeks. I just needed a dryer with larger capacity to go with a big capacity washer I got a year ago.
The defrost timer on the freezer would periodically stick, so to be safe I just bought a newer larger capacity one. I had ordered a couple of hogs and needed the space. I don't need this stuff sitting around here when I can potentially get some $$ from it.
I personally believe my problems aren't so much from chemicals as they are from too many antibiotics when I was younger. I have never been very healthy.
I came from a pretty poor family and most of our food came from our own garden other than the meat that they bought. They didn't use hormones in meat back then like they do now. You can't fix what is broken, but I rarely take antibiotics now unless I have to. If there is any natural cures I always try them first.
At any rate I don't have to worry about chemical sprays around here and I'm very thankful.
We got some more rain during the night. I don't think very much, but it was some. If the bugs don't kill the rest of my garden it actually might produce a little yet. Now that I've blocked my veggie eating rabbit from the garden I'm looking forward to getting some tomatoes again.

danz I had a lot of antibiotics growing up as well, I was sick a lot too as a kid. I had a lot of sore throats & ear infections & they gave antibiotics way too freely back then. But I do think a lot of my health problems are due to the chemicals I was exposed to from the fields around me for years. I just don't think our bodies were meant to absorb all of that. You're always working on something it seems like, you must be a pretty handy person to have around with your skills. I wish sometimes I was more mechanically inclined so I could fix things without having to wait for someone else to do it.

We got more rain last night here as well so it's probably muddy out there today. We needed the rain though.

Knowing how to do things is a matter of being a single mom too many years. I never could afford to pay someone to do things so I learned on my own.
Some times I think I'd like to be a girly girl and just relax and leave these things up to someone else. Maybe some day I'll have a balance between the two.
I got the birds fed and watered and came in because my ankle was hurting. I need to get my lazy rear out there and do some more work. I just am tired of the heat and humidity. It wipes me out. I find myself thinking of what birds I can do without all the time now so I guess that means I really do want to downsize. I just haven't been able to decide much on what I can stand to sell.

I have learned to do some things myself, but not as much as you, mostly because I get tired of waiting for my DH to get them done or I don't want to even ask him. I think I can build some things better than he can & he can't stand that. I've been out there this afternoon & it's so darned humid, it just kills me. I had to come back in & cool off for awhile before it's time to go back out & feed. I got a few chicks moved outside & then got some waterers changed out & ended up having to move a group of birds around. I noticed my one stall where my young chicks are in the breeder coop needs to be cleaned out, so I guess when it cools down a bit this coming week I'll have to get out there & do that. I did stock up on some pine shavings in preparation to clean coops before too long. It won't be enough I'm sure but I got as much as I could carry in my car for that trip when they were on sale.

It sure would be nice to have an unlimited supply of shavings to use for the chickens. If I had more trees on my place I would buy a chipper shredder and just make my own. But I wish I had a lot more trees as it is. I was hoping to get started on a poultry building soon then let my Chinese customer come clean my buildings. He is so grateful for my chicken poop!
I forgot I had my turkeys free ranging last night so they didn't get shut up. I sure hope they are all okay. DH went out and checked late last night and said most of them were sitting on top of their pen.

Wish you lived closer! You could come get all the wood you wanted for quite a while and we'd never miss it. But maybe elm isn't good for that. The old elm tree belt is dying out more every year and DH and I can't keep up with all the wood that needs to be cut down. I wish i had a chipper shredder but aren't they pretty expensive?
Hope your turkeys are ok!

Oh life seems to be going too fast lately ... my kids go back to school tomorrow so between chores and getting them ready I am ssoooo busy :/ plus my mom is out of town till next week so I get to go water and harvest her garden while she is gone... I am officially up to 3 of my 10 hens laying eggs :))) super excited :)))) however I have a new issue last night I went out to do my evening chicken rituals and found an unknown Raptor in my tree only to discover there are 5 of them :/ Hubby and I got some pretty coll pictures of them and I think they are Cooper Hawks but not 100% sure..

On a good note I think (or hope) my baby ducks are too big for them to mess with at this point.....

adventurousone that's an adorable pic of your ducklings! Hawks will go after grown birds, so don't let your guard down. We have mostly red-tailed hawks here where I live & every time one flies over my chickens duck & run under bushes & things.

I sure could use some cooler days around here to get a few things done. This heat & humidity just make me not want to even go out other than to do my chores I have to do. I've got to go out in a few minutes & fix my main coop run door. I have to put an L bracket on the bottom to fix it because it has come apart & then something has pushed the wire up on the bottom of the door so I need to get that fixed as well. Night before last my DH came home from work & he said the one GP Lily was having a stare off with a possum in the driveway. I looked out the front window & sure enough she was waiting patiently for the thing to stop playing "possum" & move so she could go after it. She was prepared to sit there as long as needed & watch it & I looked out a bit later & they were still sitting there. I know as soon as the thing made a move she was right after it. That's the 2nd one in a week, ugy, nasty things.

Hello everyone. Time has slipped away from me this month, and I haven't had time to post or keep up with anyone else's. I have been busy helping a 13 year old boy with a quilt for the fair. He got Reserve Grand Champion. I am extremely proud of his hard work and determination. He completed a gorgeous Lone Star; a pattern that some grown women are scared to tackle.
I have three nice looking Black Copper Marans cockerels if anyone is in need of them. They were hatched on the 9th of May. They are already crowing and harassing my Cochin hens. So it's either a new home or freezer camp for them, since I have no BCM pullets left.
I have 14 Cochin chicks available. And I am in desperate need of Cream Legbar eggs, if anyone has fertile eggs available. I am kicking myself for selling all of my hatch earlier in the season.
I hope you've all had a good summer. I've sure missed checking in to see what you've been up to.
Have a great day!

Good news from the broody front. I sneaked 3 of Graycie's eggs out from under her after dark last night and did a quick candle, and they are showing veins. She was off the nest for several hours on Saturday, and I was worried about them, but they seem to be developing. They are speckled sussex and barred rock (breeder/show quality from Danz) and I'm really hoping that they hatch for my broody She has been on the nest for 3 weeks, though, and the eggs will be at 1 week tomorrow, so I hope she hangs in there.

It's looking like all three of Coppers chicks may be cockerels (at 3 1/2 weeks). Shucks. There is still a chance one may be a pullet, but I'm not holding my breath.
