Consolidated Kansas

My 3 Marans/EE cross 14 week olds went to a new home today. I feel a little less stressed about the number of birds around here. I have room (technically) for 12 in the coop -- It will do fine for 18 or so 80% of the time. I now have 12 hens, a rooster, and one POL pullet. With her brothers in freezer camp and the younger pullets gone, she is finally getting accepted by the rest of the layers.

Of the 3 3 week olds, at least 2 are male (3 row, pea combs), so that will only add 1. That makes 15. If by some miracle some of those speckled sussex eggs hatch into pullets, I'll be able to keep some for replacement layers.

Danz, you wouldn't know what to do with a FINISHED house and yard. If you weren't busy, you wouldn't be happy.

LOL Sharol. You haven't seen all the projects I started years ago and swore I would finish when I retired. I have enough needlework alone to keep me busy if I worked on it for hours every day for the next 10 years. It would just be nice to be able to have time to keep the house clean and actually feel like looked clean when I was done.
Today I pulled out some can lights I intended to install in my kitchen. I will have to start that project some time when DH is gone. He is so not on board with me doing it. I need to finish that before I get new flooring in though. I also spent some time in the basement looking for stain for my antique incubator. Couldn't find an appropriate color so I did a test spot just using a sealer finish to see if it was going to look okay with no stain. I'm waiting for it to dry.
I need to be out working with the birds but I watered earlier so plan to feed later.

Sounds like some kind of place you visited, Danz! I have this idealic dream farm in my head too but I don't know if it'll ever happen because I get enthused about new stuff (animals) way too often for it to turn out like in my head! Maybe like Sharol said I'm almost happier that way. Altho when you can't get the things done that Have to be done that's not fun either.
I'm still looking for ducks and I really like Australian Spotteds and Black or Blue East Indies. However, the Indies seem hard to find. Anyone on here know anything about them? I check for threads specific to the breed but they seem to have kind of died. :( I'd like to find a couple pairs or trios.
I've also been scouring the web for another good Nigerian dwarf doe. 2 does just aren't really enough for us and DHs parents. I've found a couple near Wichita if I'm willing to pay what they're asking.

I have good intentions but just don't have the energy to complete all I want or need to do any more. It just gets too overwhelming sometimes & I just give up. I really haven't seen anybody around with East Indies ducks. I know someone else looking for a Nigerian Dwarf Doe so if you find some let me know so I can pass it on.

I really didn't get much at all accomplished today but I didn't set out to either. I got that window installed yesterday & I guess that was my accomplishment for this week. The chickens are thanking me for giving them more air circulation in the coop.

You and me both. I barely got chores done and supper on the table. Did a big shopping trip yesterday and it kind of took it out of me.

Will do. Makes a big difference on what people want their ND for on price. I was told all along that a good milking doe would cost me $300, and I'm beginning to believ them. I paid $150 each for the 2 that I have and at this point at least the older one isn't worth much if any more than that. She's a complete sweetie and is usually very well mannered at milking but her production isn't what I'd like. The other one has better bloodlines and I should get better production from her but shes an absolute idiot. She spooks silly at the slightest inclination and is much harder to handle. I hope she calms down when she kids or it's going to be a nightmare. Wierd thing is, both parents are very tame and mellow goats. Go figure!

I really wish you were closer to this area. I could make a couple recommendations to you but they'd be events and you never know for sure what is going to be there..
I will send you a name and phone number for a person who might have East Indies ducks or know of someone who does.
I have so many ideas about what I would like but it's just dreaming. I have changed directions so many times in my life that it's hard to be definitive about things. I do know that as I age it is more and more important to have a single level home. I don't particularly like single story homes but my legs convince me I need one. I'm not going anywhere anyway because I can't afford to move.

I wish so too!! Living clear out here has it's drawbacks!! Someday... Maybe well be able to afford to move somewhere where it's away from chemical application but not so terribly far from everything!
Thanks!!! I'll see if I can get in touch with them.

It's hot and humid so far today. The wind isn't blowing to speak of either which is making it worse.
BUT...so far it's been a great day!

My broody turkey hatched a little poult. She took off to take care of it which seems to be overly independent already, and left the nest. So I gathered the eggs and came up with 6 more live poults that should be hatching within the week. Then while finishing feeding I see my peahen has hatched at least one baby. She is still sitting tight and daddy Pete is standing guard over them. Just warms my heart and makes me smile. It's so nice to watch them hatch naturally. So now I'm gathering waterers for the babies so they can drink. I still have a lot to do out there but I got so thirstly I had to come in for a while.

How exciting. I agree that having them hatched by the hens is better. Not to mention less work in the house. Will you raise the rest of the poults or try to get the mother to take them once they hatch?

that water thing can be a deal if you don't drink enough.
