Consolidated Kansas

Good morning.....well almost afternoon now!
i got a delightful surprise this morning. I thought Rebel Dottie looked a bit more tense than usual this morning......

When I lifted her to gather the unmarked eggs I was greeted by this little fellow!

I am off today and got to spend some more time with the flock and let them range the garden again. I had to share this funny sight
(I love the confusion on the roo's face

The coop kittens I got a couple of months ago are working out perfectly. I got 3 males and couldn't be happier with them. They don't mess with the chickens and my mice are gone from the coop! The only downside is that they are friendlier than expected and the kids won't leave them alone. They take the torture in stride and are great cats!

Cherwill it's only finished on the outside. Now comes the hard part. The part I have to do all by myself. Lots of building to go on in there. Which means I need to sell lots of birds to pay for the lumber.
I think I'm going to start on my first cabinet today where the sink and the manifold for the water will sit. That is if I get up and get busy. I'm going to use scrap lumber from the building to make the frame for it.
Tarabella congrats on the chick.

Good afternoon peeps! Looks like a nice day coming here. I was driving to work this morning around 6:30 and completely forgot to even look for the lunar eclipse. Duh!!! Oh well, guess I will wait for the next one.

Trish, good to see you got the fence done and I absolutely agree on how great having the GPs around.

Cherwill, good to hear that your still get some tomatoes after the frost... I am always closing the wrong browser especially if I have 10+ browsers and windows open on the screen.

Tarabella, that is one cute little chick! How exciting! Love the pic of the roo trying to see if the cat is dead or what. I just got 2 kittens and they are currently in the barn storage room. I'm trying to slowly introduce them to the birds. Did you just put your kitties in the coop and let them roam/walk around from day 1? I sure could use some advise here to see what I can do with mine.

A busy day here at work for me. Wednesday seems to be meeting days from the get go. I'm getting ready to go to another one here shortly.

Have a great day!

@TaraBellaBirds - jealous of your hatch... still looking for a chance to candle mine again when she leaves the nest.

I candle my broodies as night, they don't seem to get as agitated then, plus I can see so much more!

Thanks I can't wait to see how it feathers out, it is the first one that really looks like a Brahma. When we got the kittens I put them in a large kennel for the first week, inside the coop. They were around 10 weeks when we got them. I wanted them to get used to the sights and smells. After about a week (a bit less probably 5 days) I let them out at night and they were in their kennel or around it, by morning. After that they stayed in the coop for several weeks, but now they roam at night. We are basically mouse free in the coop, even with them not being in there at night.

Hi everyone
It’s nice to see the Kansas thread is going strong. My daughter is getting into 4H this year. We do the palomino horse shows in Kansas right now. So I was looking for some quality chickens she can show in 4H. I noticed some of you have some “rare” breeds. We are looking for some hatching eggs for February or March. The breeds she likes are Jubilee and Mottled Orpingtons, Speckled Sussex, Mille fleur leghorns. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks…..

Stinky chicken I'm not far from you. I go to Topeka every now and then for doctors appointments or to shop at one of the chain stores. I have some of all those but the leghorns. However if you are going to show I don't believe the Jubilees or the mottles are an accepted color in Orpingtons yet. I do have nice buffs, whites, and blacks though which are accepted. I think you can show in the other class with the newer colors. You would need to check on that. My birds are 100% English except for the buffs which are bred for exhibition and therefore have some American blood in them.
I didn't get anything I planned done today. I kept having this or that distract me. Seems the days just are never long enough.

Thank you to everyone that offered advice for my cracked eggs. I decided to use a tiny peice of duct tape since that is what I had on hand. I got both covered successfully. One hatched just a few minute ago!

The other died in shell.

So far I have 3 hatched and one is not doing anything, but Mama and babies are doing great.

Great. Absolutely you can get some jubilees. The girls are just beginning to lay but I candled a developing egg yesterday. I have 5 new eggs out there today so some of the other jubilee girls are starting to lay. Just remind me when you are ready. I never completely quit hatching although it slows down a lot in winter.
