Consolidated Kansas

Trish, I do go to swap meets, but the weather on Saturdays has been against me. I do great at the Afton swap, but it closes from October to April. The Turkey Creek swap east of Joplin MO is one of my closer swaps, but the weather has been a problem this year. I have listed on Craigslist and some of the Facebook sites, but haven't had many sales through them. Most people think twice about driving down 6 miles of mud roads for a few birds.

Yeah most of the swaps are seasonal or if they're not then like you say the weather doesn't cooperate. I don't live in the greatest place for people to come either with how our driveway is but I do get some who will do it. We live on a big limestone ridge here in the Flint Hills. Our house is built into the hill in the back with 3 sides being underground & then there is a 2nd floor that sits at ground level in the back. Anyway, our driveway is a kind of nightmare. I have no idea what these people were thinking when they had it put in other than maybe they didn't want to have to blast rock. You come in off the road at a 90 degree angle left & up at the same time & then turn right & go up some more & over the hill. It's really bad when it's icy or snows. We have an old truck that is 4 wheel drive to get us out in the winter if we have to use it because we usually can't get our cars up the hill if it's slick or snows too much.

I live on top of a hill, and the county road, to the east, has a steep drop, and a 90 degree curve at the bottom; then goes up another hill. There have been times in the past, where I couldn't make it up the hill ,due to deep snow. And there have been many that have not make the curve, at the bottom. Luckily, I can come in from the west without much problems. It is not a road, for a stranger, to travel at night for the first time.

I hear you there on the road, to the east of our driveway the road goes up a big hill & if you're coming from the east to west it's like a roller coaster & you can't see people coming up over that hill if you're going up from west to east so it's a real hazard. The idiots don't slow down out there either. We have a barrier with this hill by our house from the road fortunately. Some people have said they didn't know there was a house down here, that's OK by me. The big hill however to the east is a big stream when it rains so one year we got rain for days & the road washed totally out in two places. One of them was right in front of our driveway so we couldn't get in or out for a few days till the township brought rocks & equipment to build it back up, it was a total mess. Over time the grader has cut the road back down where they built it up so it may happen again some day. They're really not smart with road maintenance at all these days. They don't believe in drainage ditches any more so the water has nowhere to go off the road. We see it running downhill into the field a lot of times & it made a big hole in the road they had to fix. You would think they would get it but they just don't care.

I'm smiling reading you alls' descriptions of your roads. I think that where we live is nicely rolling but it sounds pancake flat compared to what you guys have going on! Altho compared to 20+- miles south of here where I grew up it Is rolling. Lol we live off on gravel roads as well. I wouldn't trade it for living by a highway.
You make the amount of fee I got thru look ridiculously tiny! ;)

I'm hoping for a white Christmas. It snowed a bit the other night but it didn't last even 24 hours.

I posted my 2, 17 week old SS cockerels on the poultry swap site and Craigslist. If anyone here needs a nice SS rooster, these boys need to be gone.

They are turning into really beautiful boys, but if they aren't gone by Friday, my DH and I are going to send them to freezer camp. They are driving the younger hens crazy and my Roo is about DONE with them.

Thanks. I think they are, too. I would love to keep one, but....

I wish I could take one, but no roos allowed here in town. My SS hen is my favorite bird; she has a great personality.

All of you slogging around in mud and whatnot, please be careful!

My girls are finally laying regularly and we're getting 2-4 eggs a day from our 9 hens. DH thinks because we have three dozen eggs, we need to be using them up. I'm hoarding those suckers in case of another dry spell.

Besides, with the baking I'll be doing this week, I'll probably go through quite a few of them.

Sharol, I wouldn't cull those guys just yet if you can find a place to keep them. People are going to be looking for a good cockerel in just a few weeks for breeding. Trying to find a nice sussex cockerel is nearly impossible.
Well my road looks fairly flat and straight but I live at the bottom of a huge incline from each side. It's just that it is a couple miles wide so people don't notice the slope so much. But the problem here is one of two things. First it's the clay. If it's wet this dirt road is just like ice. And it also sticks to everything. Secondly we get terrible drifting. With winter storms our N/S roads drift shut almost every storm and the East/west storms drift shut anytime there is 3 inches or more snow and wind involved. We've been snowed in so many times. There's no way I'd ever be able to leave home when it snows much, if we didn't own a couple of 4 wheel drive vehicles and a tractor to pull us out if we get stuck otherwise. I wouldn't trade it for a paved road in any way shape or form though. I like my peace and quiet.
Also my location is about an hour from any larger metro area so getting customers is like pulling teeth. I have to drive a long ways to get much of anything but those city dwellers can't see driving the same distance to get here. They sure don't hesitate to ask me to drive to them though. Sometimes I wish I lived closer to a metro area but when I go to one of the more populated areas I thank God for living where I do.
We had our little Christmas celebration with my sons yesterday. I must say I am glad it is over. It's been such a busy year for me I'm glad to have one less thing to deal with.
