Consolidated Kansas

Here are some pictures of the black LF Cochin Cock that I acquired this week. I found him at the state fair in September and just loved him. I put a business card on his cage, and prayed.
His previous owner called me about another ago to see if I still wanted him. Well....heck yes!
So here he is. Mr. No name as of yet.

KsKingBee, I sent you a PM.

Prairie Fleur, my two GPs will guard opposite sides of the property like danz said. I will see one closer up to the chicken pens & the other down by the sheep & goat pens. If they both come up by the house there will be one on the hill looking up to the north & the other will be downhill looking south. I get a kick out of watching them in action. If one sounds the alarm she will come pounding down towards whatever she hears making this whoof, whoof, whoof sound as she runs & the other will come running right after her. I watched one evening when I had to go back out & shut the run door a bit after dark as Lily took off to run the coyotes yipping away from the fence line & Jasmine was sitting there listening. I told her to go get them & she looked at me like well she's handling it. Mine do at times go outside of the fence line here because they can go right through the barbed wire fence. But they aren't gone long & always come back very soon because they know where they belong & what their job is.

friendshipstar, that's a pretty rooster! I hope he works out for you.

Well I'm waiting on approval from the insurance company to get an MRI on my knee. The Dr. has a suspicion I tore my meniscus & he agrees with me that I probably hurt it the first time when I fell & broke my other leg because I twisted both legs in that fall. We'll see what the test shows.

If any of you know a breeder who will have GP pups soon, I am interested.

I am hoping to have some pups in a few months. I'm thinking Britt will be in season in a couple months. I am guessing about April or May for pups if you want to wait that long. I can't believe it. I thought you were opposed to having a dog!!! You really won't regret it.

Nice looking boy. LF Cochins are beautiful birds.
Trish I hate to see you have surgery but if it gets you well it will be worth it. I wish I was closer so I could help you out if you need it later.

Trisha,
I am not very far away and can almost always get away during the day if there is anything I can do to help. I've been a nurse for twenty years, and I'm also pretty good at scooping chicken poop.

If anyone has a nice cream legbar cock that they would like to sell or trade let me know. I Have some girls who will be lonely this spring if I dont find one.

Thanks friendshipstar. If I have to have surgery I may take you up on that. My DH is not into the chickens & animals & is getting tired of doing my chores. I do have several extra cream legbar cockerels I'm growing out. I have to wait & see which two I'm keeping first.

I am just hoping that I can train it to NOT run off the deer.

You'd probably be better off starting with a pup then, so he'd learn that the deer belong. Prairie Fleur did know of a young male that needed to be rehomed. I'm not sure if he is still available or not. He was about 18 months old. I doubt that an older dog would learn the deer belong though.

My two don't allow deer up here by the house but I don't mind that because they always got in my garden. If you teach them to leave them alone they should consider them part of their wards. Mine seem to take inventory whenever something new comes in.

Yeah the same here Trish. I used to keep a salt block out for the deer cause I enjoyed seeing them but they were notorious for eating what I didn't want them to. Between the deer and the wild turkeys nothing went unscathed. I can still watch them down the road or in the field across the road so I'm happy with that. The deer got so used to us that they would look up but didn't run when we went out the door. I must admit it was a nice thing to see out my kitchen window.
