Consolidated Kansas

Oh my gosh, that's funny Danz!

Thanks Tara, for the link!

Trish44, the smell really is awful, I can still smell it whenever I see a pic of the Cornish. I should have run them with the other birds outside and I know I could do a better job between fermented feed and keeping them on pasture, but I just can't bring myself to consider it. My Buff Sussex are really substantial birds so I think they will work just fine.

Danz, Ack!! I only saw the facebook post when I replied. The heater mishap is awful.

@chicken danz - that's awful. I'm extra happy I've already been down to pick my birds up. One less person for you to worry about. More motivation to get those young ones settled into your new building.

Seems like you often end up with too many birds and not enough buyers, or not enough birds and too many buyers.

Its impossible to balance chicks and buyers. Even if I only custom hatched, the numbers would be off. You never count your chickens until they're hatched.

I really do love hatching. It's just winter weather and lack of space that makes it difficult. DH did get one end of the ceiling in the building. Technically I could build a wall and house some birds down there but I don't want to block off the whole thing because in the end, I plan to have a thermostatically controlled heater warming the entire space to room temperature. I might figure out how to hang plastic as King Bee said, but it would certainly limit air flow and exchange. I am out of lumber right now so whatever I do is going to require a trip to Topeka to buy a load of lumber. I have some Menards rebates so it's just a matter of getting decent weather and time to go get it.
I have a ton of feed ordered for this afternoon. I'm not looking forward to shoveling that off in this weather for sure. But we have snow forecast for the next 4 days so I have to get it off the truck. DH is working long days until Tuesday so I can't beg for help.
Gradually I am trying to reduce numbers. I wish I had a magical formula for knowing who quits laying and who is laying. In a yellow legged bird you can tell that, but with white legged birds it isn't as obvious.

So sorry danz about your babies. By hats awful, this weather is the pits!

I am just trying to smuggle down and stay warm, my sister has been doing the birds since my lungs lock up in any weather below 30ish. I love going out and spending time with them but not when its like this!

Kskingbee, you still planning to go to that auction-didn't you say it was tomorrow? What miserable weather for it though. Last auction I went to when weather was even chill, the babies looked only half alive by time they got picked up to take home. I just can't get excited in this weather.

Keep me in mind for one of your silver pied eggs or babies later on though, or if you hear tell or see of any. :)

KKB I'm with thndrdancr on those silver pied babies!! I'd love one! :) let me know if you have any later this spring. The pair that I got from you is doing great altho they aren't very happy about the weather!!

The auction is on the last Friday of the month and we had decided not to go a few days ago. For me, it needs to be nice so the buyers come out, the buyers that would be there today are bargain shoppers and on a day like today they would buy everything for a song.

I want it to be 50* or better and not much wind. We will be taking a huge load of Easter chicks and guineas next month.

I have an interesting mix of birds in my Pied pen. Pied Piper is an India Blue Pied White Eye split Cameo cock and I have him paired up with four hens. An India Blue Pied, India Blue Silver Pied, Cameo White Eye, and a Cameo Silver Pied. There is a tremendous amount of possibilities in those combinations! It isn't going to be easy to catch which hen lays what egg but I will give it a good try for you.

Right now I have one too many cocks, I haven't had him long enough to turn loose and he is in a small pen with his hen and a pair of BCMs. The hen I am keeping, but he needs a home if anyone knows someone who would like a good deal on a five-year-old India Blue Black Shoulder, steer them my way. His train is in surprisingly good condition considering that the pen is so small.

Glad to hear about the young ones! The only happy birds I have today are inside the brooder/coop. Hopefully, I will have lots to choose from!
