Consolidated Kansas

Well, I lost my peahen today. :( found her dead on the yard. Don't know if the cold was too much for her or what. They have the shed to go in and a dog house but they opted to roost in the trees. I'm terribly disappointed. My alpaca is still hanging on but not much change either. We may have to out her down if she doesn't start improving soon. :( and add family stress on top of that it's definitely not bee the greatest day I've ever had. Sigh.

Prairie fleur, so sorry you lost your peahen. It's a real blow. If you are averse to chemicals you might try the oregano oil like I use. I am not averse to chemicals, I just know the oil works for a lot of things. Mites snd live are another story and I have a constant fight on my hands with the ugly critters.

I have a couple ib hens I am going to sell to make room for the silver pieds that I hoping for. Also some yearlings but they aren't ready to leave home yet. :)

Howdy all!!!!
I know I am not from Kansas anymore but I wanted to stop by and say hello from the snow covered, freezing state of Maine! Despite the fact that there is a lot of snow on the ground still we are thinking about broilers this spring and wondering if anyone has any recommendations? I want a normal sized bird, no gigantic breasted birds and something with a lot of flavor. Everyone we know has done cornish and said they taste just like store bought birds. Any ideas?

Hey JosieChick!!! I processed some EE's from Mt. Healthy that had great flavor. It seems like we processed at 16/17 weeks and can't remember how much they weighed dressed out but they were exceptionally good.

Danz and KKB I hadn't even realized Prejudice wasn't feeling well until she was dead. I just thought she was cold. My vet does fecals for me as well altho I've never taken pea poo in yet. ;) lol I'd have treated her with Something if I'd had any idea. Sigh. Oh well I'll just have to watch them a little closer. Hopefully Pride wI'll manage to survive alone until I can get another one or two or..... :)
My alpaca seems to be responding to the worming regime I've been putting her thru and all the prayers I've prayed! She ate a little alfalfa this evening and a little bit of carrot top. She's a little more lively and not so listless. :celebrate
The snow definitely started melting off today. Had to do a grocery shopping trip today; if the weather warms up later this week I didn't want to waste it by having to be in town. My does are still increasing in size. Guess we'll see if this is the week we finally have kids on the ground!

I can't wait til this weather warms up. My peas have all been going in the chicken coop at night so that is saying something. That wind makes it awful. I hope everyone stays warm through the next few nights and then looks like we might be in the clear for a warmup!

Prairie, is your pea boy India blue? I am uncertain on what my babies will be, my white 2 year old was apparently very busy last summer.

Welcome to all the new people and stay warm all.

Hmmmm....I was thinking about trying some freedom rangers but I really want some blue egg layers too so it might be interesting to try some EEs too and see how they dress out! Were they tough at all at 16 weeks? Did you have any hens from that batch and do they lay colored eggs? Thanks!

So happy to see you here!!! I butchered several of my sex link birds (white rock/ New Hamp) and they were excellent. No blue eggs though. We've been getting our own frozen version of Kansas lately. Nothing like yours though. Thank heavens!!

Cecal or capilliary worms will knock a pea down instantly. They will seem fine, their wings will droop and they are dead the next day. No warning at all unless you see the wings drooping. It would certainly be worth while to do that necropsy so you won't lose your cock to the same thing.

The wind is blowing really hard today but it's supposed to get warm. At least it is finally melting this stupid snow. Then another cold front moving in tonight. Tomorrow we are supposed to be back in the deep freeze. But it looks like it will warm up some for the weekend.

Got lots of chicks in the incubator and more to come!!!

Danz-If I ordered sex link birds from a hatchery would they be that same cross? Or does it depend on the breed? We want to add a few more eggl layers. I am thinking of trying a couple different choices, raising them all together and seeing how they turn out individually to make a decision for next year. We are thinking of trying Freedom Rangers too. A lot of people seem to like them.

It might seem crazy but I actually do not miss the up and downs in Kansas. At least here it is winter, its chilly, warm days are like 25 degrees and that feels warm! That 70 degrees one day and then 12 the next is too much for me!

So do you feed medicated feed all the time then or just treat several times a year?
