Well those chicks had better hatch! My DH's $#@& bulldog got out and killed two of my Rhode Island Reds I suppose thats the hazards of dogs and chickens on the same property.

We've lost a few birds to our dogs too. It happens.

This was our first one at about 10:30, the second one is black and made an appearance around 2 pm. I told the teachers to expect to come in to several playing soccer with their siblings in the morning.

I live in south central Kansas about 25 miles east of Wichita.
For those of you who saw my post about the cold incubator, we had 13 chicks hatch. Not too shabby. LF Cochin chicks are tough little birds.

14 so far, I'm in another school building but planning to head over there at 11:30 to check in. They are concerned because a few have small pieces of shell stuck to them. I told them to LEAVE IT! And I would be over as soon as I could, the last thing I need is several herniated chicks

They also tell me one is half out and they really want to help it, but I told them as long as it can breath to let it be for now.

Happy New Peafowl chicks to you, Danz! I know you and Trish are crazy busy this time of year.

I have 48 eggs in the incubator on Day 9. Maddie, the broody Aloha, is still sitting faithfully on her 11 eggs. Yesterday,the yard chickens were getting treats and Maddie started putting up a huge fuss from the broody pen in the coop. So the kids went in and gave her some treats and put her back on her nest and she was happy again. Funny broody, that one.

I am supposed to get chicks the end of this month or beginning of next from Walt'z Ark again. I'm getting a few Light Sussex and Speckled Sussex. If they are anything like the Buff Sussex I already purchased from them, I'm going to be real happy.

The fermented feed consumption has cut by half! I finally stopped speed reading the directions for fermenting and realized the feed is supposed to have 4 days to ferment before you start feeding, otherwise you are only getting partial improvement on nutrient uptake and resulting in partial improvement on less feed. They went from eating 3 of those long feeders completely full, to one and a half per 12 hours. I'm stoked! I started some for the big birds/ducks so they will begin again today. I also treated the chicks with wheat fodder (they have grit available) and they had a great time with that stuff. They scratched the area up quite nicely going after the fodder.

I'm happy today. It's really cold out....but I went out to feed chicks and check on things. I had a duck hatch in the incubator so I put it in with the goose sitting on the two dead eggs. I took the eggs. She fussed a bit but is now quietly sitting with the duck under her.
Then I heard the geese all yelling and went out to discover one of the geese had hatched two goslings. Everyone was arguing about who owned the chicks. I grabbed the goslings and there was a vacant nest where they may have come from. There was another egg in there and I took it. I candled and it has pipped the air cell so it should hatch soon as well. Most of these geese are due to hatch their eggs within a week or so of each other so I need to be monitoring them pretty closely. I feel mean taking the babies but in a big group like that I loose the babies cause the adults want to steal them from each other. I hatched one more gosling over night and have a another one pipped as well.
I tried to move a pen so I could set the ducklings up outside but I'm going to have to wait for the ground to dry some so I can move it with the tractor. I'll be really happy to get those out of the house.
The chickens I moved to the building are all back laying again. Yay! I have a long ways to go before I am done but I'm glad they are accepting their new home.
I haven't checked to see if there are any more peafowl eggs. They are really late coming this year. At least I'm not loosing them to frost.
