Consolidated Kansas

Muscovy momma with guinea keets. I think I will separate them from her before she tries to teach them to swim.

Ralph that's adorable!

I had guinea keets hatch yesterday & the day before from shipped eggs. I got a really good hatch out of them along with just a few eggs from my birds. I have 16 keets running around my brooder now, they're so cute & so tiny.

It's raining here today, arrrrgggghhh just what we needed. We had planned to finish up the last run of fence today but it's not happening.

Deerfield, I'm glad your DD is doing better, what a relief.

Danz, here's some better pics of those Sussex. What do you think on sexes now? Pullet

Iffy but I'd say cockerel. This one has excellent tail markings from what I can see. Would be an excellent breeder bird.

It poured again last night and we have another storm moving in shortly. Are we ever going to get a break? Oops just looked out. It's already raining again. My daughter lives in Austin and she sent me pictures form inside her house. There is mold growing every where just from all the humidity in the air. She trains dogs and has some very expensive leather leashes she hangs inside to protect them. She sent me some pictures. Here is a picture of a black leather leash. just hanging as she had it.

She also sent me pictures of her floors. Anywhere the varnish was worn on a wood floor there was mold. I would be freaking out. Of course she rents so I'm sure there is no way for her to pay someone to come in and fix it. And her landlord does nothing but collect the rent. Makes me thankful I have a dehumidifier to run in here. I had another one in the basement but it died. I'm thinking maybe I should look into getting another one.
I'm being a grizzly because of dealing with all this rain and mud but I am so thankful I don't have to deal with that.
I'm a bit disappointed that I haven't seen the 17 year cicadas here. I looked at a map and we were supposed to be in the hatch zone. Maybe between my birds and the wild birds they don't survive or they don't come here at all. I remember playing with them when I was a kid. Yeah I was a weird little girl. Had to have animals around me then too...even if it was just bugs. I used to play in a tractor tire sand pile and build castles and motes etc. I would take rolly pollies for my people in the kingdom and those really big sow bugs would be my king and queen. Just think if there were computers and video games back then all that imagination probably would have gotten me in more trouble.

They say you should look for the positive side of a negative situation, like this weather pattern we are in now. The positive side would be that it did not happen in January or February, or we would still have snow on the ground!

OOOOOOHhhhhhh, love those pics of the Speckleds!!! Such beautiful birds. I'm a sucker for anything spotted!

Trish, thanks. She is doing better but today she just wants to cry. She is so tired of the pain and not being able to eat. Bless her heart, I had days like that. I just can't wait till next week when she should be doing much, much better. At least she hasn't had anymore complications.

Danz, I feel so sorry for your daughter -- that mold is awful. Just gross. Is she worried it will make them sick? She desperately needs a de-humidifier for sure. I hope you get another one too. I'm worried about mold for you as well. That stuff is vile.

Ralph, That is so true!

As I sink up to my knees to collect my radishes in the garden, I will remember that! I pulled them yesterday and it was quite a trick. They had gotten to the size of ping pong balls but were deliciously mild and no cracking, pithing. Yum! I had them in earthboxes I bought when I lived in the city. Those things work quite well. Anyway, I think if we'd had all this in snow, I wouldn't have such delicious. radishes.

I have a very busy day, yet to go... working on caponizing, it's really hard work.

Hard week.
We lost 14 of the 15 chicks that we kept from the classroom hatch. Long story, suffice it to say that dogs and chickens don't always mix.

They were supposed to be the kids show birds for this year.

So the question becomes, who has some half feathered or fully feathered young pullets that they need to sell? I'm not super worried about what breed anymore, so long as they are pure bred.
I'm going to wait until the 1st to pick up any birds because we're going out of state for a few days for a graduation, but any leads would be awesome.

Such an awful waste...

Ok, so here are some pictures of the 4 barnvelder babies for ya. This is the first time I've used photobucket so I hope they work!

My silkie d'uccle mixes and bantam are having trouble with long toe nails that want to curl...I am going to work on cutting them down bit by bit, but is that common for those breeds or just mine because they are always going broody? I have also decided that I am done with feathered feet chickens!
