I just keep telling myself that this is one more day I don't have to worry about the hens overheating. don't have to freeze water bottles. Don't have to worry at night about the heat in the coop. Intellectually I know that this temperature is much easier on them than the heat would be.

Yeah but not on me. I don't do cool and wet.

I hear you. The older I get the less tolerant I am of extremes of any kind. Weather, politics, religion -- you name it. As my DH would say,"As I have gotten older, I suffer fools less lightly." I think that might apply to 65 degrees in July.

@Trish44

I didn't want to build anything permanent as I'm in the middle of a total coop remodel that will include a brooder. So, I just wrapped a large dog crate in mesh netting with zip ties to hold it tight. I can drape cardboard or towels over it to keep the heat in when necessary. Turned out to be a very humid day here, I'm perspiring and its steamy in the coop. UGH!

What are sweeter heaters??

They are an enclosed panel heater that is safer than the heatlamp ones and also provide a more even heat over a larger area with fewer watts.

I have two of them I use in the winter over the high roosts and then if I have a brooder, in the spring/summer. They only heat the area directly under them, so there is less chance of creating excessive moisture buildup.

LOVE LOVE LOVE them. So do the chickens ;-)

I had that symptom last spring when I was losing hens to egg binding. I did necropsies, so I know that was the cause. I had thought it might be gleet, but all 3 were egg bound. They were my oldest, sweetest hens, so it was devastating at the time. I think I may have not had the right kind of calcium suppliment available for them. In any case what was done was done. Lesson learned.
